I only take vacation days when they're about to expire. But I show those bastards trying to cram vacations down my throat - I spend most of my vacations working from home.

Pretty sad, when taking "earned" vacation days off can be held against the employee, or workers view vacation time that way.No wonder we have so many companies employing part-time or contract workers who don't "expect" any paid time off, when they feel Lucky enough to have the damn job.
Also no surprise we had Unions forming on behalf of dog tired and over worked people, mostly working jobs with no benefits, over 40 hours a week, working in dangerous environments (coal miners, oil riggers, railroad or steel workers, lumberjacks) when that meant trading income for safety, just trying to get a fair shake.
If we submit more then 2 leave slips in a year, its an automatic disqualification from earning top marks during our review. Only thing that doesn't count against you is days taken with FMLA. We get 2 weeks a year, plus 2 floating holidays, and 2 weeks sick.

Wow your county is a hardass. I submitted leave slips all the time; took half days when I felt like crap or had errands to run. I used up alot during the pregnancy with all of my doctor visits, But we also accrued a ton of leave; sick and personal. I still had so much from when I didn't take vacation that my payout after I quit was pretty nice. I'm sure they'll have to scale back on that sort of thing eventually; people foam at the mouth when government employees get better benefits (for less pay though).

As a nurse in private employ, none of what you post pertains to my personal experiences. In fact, when I was younger, I was the kind of employee that pulled extra shifts for people calling in sick--with sick kids. I was always last in line for getting holidays off, like Thanksgiving or Christmas--because I didn't have kids.
Later, as a Clinical Manager, I'd have to fill in for nurses (and pretty much anyone on night shift) who'd call in sick ten minutes before their shift, or move other nurses around, because it was too late to call an outside agency to fill in the gaps. I spent twenty years doing that shit. Days, Evenings, Nights, Weekends, Holidays. OB/GYN, NICU, ER, CCU, ICU, med-surg, IV therapy, dietary, materials management, Social Services....damn I'm tired just remembering it.
Ya, GGT, one of my friends is a nurse and deals with that alot. Last Saturday she ended up working an extra shift, plus 2 hours after that because someone called in sick and another had car trouble. My cousin is also a nurse and she's always working it seems. I really feel for people in hospital employment. You really have to have a special personality and compassion (and patience) to do that line of work. I lack all three
My sister's job (in the science field) she gets alot of time off but ends up working major holidays because she is unmarried and no kids.
For what it's worth, before I got my government job I worked all holidays at my other private industry jobs, and sometimes came in for other sick people. Even sometimes at my government jobs I worked them if others had already requested vacation (I worked for an aquarium so we were open every day but Thanksgiving and Christmas, and my job was "behind the scenes" so someone had to do work even if the public wasn't there). Luckily I got overtime for holidays, so in the beginning I'd work them just to get the extra cash.
It wasn't until I moved up in position that I took more time off. However, some people who had been with the city for years had so much vacation (we could rollover a certain amount from previous years) that some people would take off weeks at a time. One guy I worked with didn't work a full 40 hour workweek the entire time I was at another city facility-2 years!
This is winding down nicely. Spent some time with family, went to a museum, read through one book and then started Bonfire of the Vanities. Got to spend last night for the first time with a woman I met a few weeks ago.
Though I've noticed how my attachment to my real life begins to fray after about five days outside of work. For the first few days I had a very active plan for things. Then I started to wind-down and just saw movies and had lunches and dinners with people. Then I just started doing fuck-all. It really takes two weeks to totally compress, but this has been overall really pleasant and a good (plus cheap!) way to relax.
Now it's snowing outside in NY. Below are some photos (sans the ones with people/me) from this week, taken on my 1980s Nikon FE-2 35mm camera for practice. I haven't used the camera in years; my manual photo skills have really gone to hell.
