In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
So, I've managed to catch something that looks (well, feels) an awful lot like flu.
Asked my family if they had anything for it.
They did.
Some homeopathic crap.
I usually point and laugh when people claim that homeopathic remedies are somehow superior to "teh eeeevil Western madicine" - or that they work at all. But seeing someone close to me actually believing that they've bought anything more useful than a few grams of extremely overpriced sugar...![]()

Found out a group of my friends are going on a cruise to Bermuda in October. They've invited us along too but there is no way we can go. I miss the carefree days![]()
My PS3's optical drive appears to be dying. It won't read inserted discs most of the time. Took 30 minutes the other night before it would read the last Harry Potter movie, and I couldn't get it to read Uncharted last night.
Its one of the 80gb models with software emulation. Not sure if I should try to track down a similar yellowed model and rip the optical drive out of that one, or go for one of the new less power hungry slim designs.

Companies that tag a position as "Full-Time" or "Permanent" for their job posts at job search engines only to mention that they're looking for freelancers or contract employees or even interns in the job description. Thanks for wasting my precious free time trying to improve my life.

Apologies to all for the following rant...
Fucking external HDD died with about a terabyte of data that was anything up to 10 years old - including family photo's, video's, tax records and every other fucking thing that could be stored on digital media. Incredibly some of which had also been stored on DVD's (sensibly thinking eggs+basket=fail / eggs+2xBasket=NotFail) that now mysteriously won't work in any PC. Despite this I probably wouldn't be so pissed off about it if I didn't have a newer external HDD sitting here for a week and been too busy to transfer the more important stuff over.
Even worse, it was my own fucking fault for leaving the drive in my man-cave plugged in and turned on during a 5 day fucking heatwave where it probably fried like an egg in a pan. (The DVD's were also in a box in there which may or may not explain them not working??).
I admit It was a stupid thing to do - I had not forgotten it was even in there but did not realise it was plugged in and turned on. We had an impromptu social gathering (piss-up) at our place and while in convivial-host-mode (3 sheets to the wind as my half-pirate uncle would say) I had connected it up to my old laptop and was impressing my fellow revellers by the playing of music video's through an LCD and while this was heartily endorsed and appreciated by all and sundry I confess that in my less-than-coherent condition I carefully shut everything down except the HDD.Due to the insane heat-wave and other untimely factors I did not visit my cave for an unusually long period of time (5 fucking days!) and therefore never had an opportunity to observe the little green LED saying "Turn me off dickhead!"

I have to drive to Würzburg tomorrow just because a client wants to impress their client and show how much they care about their problem. And on Wednesday VW (the client's client client) will show up and everyone is shitting their paints.![]()

Wow. I totally thought you were talking about a nutraceutical, which is normally the kind of recommendation I get from uninformed family members... and while I'm often extremely skeptical of their efficacy, I do know that some of them have actual measurable scientific benefits. But apparently they believe in real homeopathy in your family. Sorry to hear, chum.
Got through to 2nd interview stage with one of the UK's oldest banks.
It's a structured interview, whereby I am given a business proposal, have 30 mins to prepare a business case and a project initiation piece from it, then present those to the interviewer(s).
I hate presentations, and am not good at them.![]()
Its kinda depressing but school shootings seem to have lost their shock value - how fucked up is that?

According to the net, an unknown number of BestBuys are giving away Steelbook cases with Assassins Creed III pre-orders. No one at my local stores knew anything about it![]()

Entirely out of the blue, a friend of six years, whom I considered a brother, ended our friendship tonight. I've sat here for the last several hours trying to make some kind of sense of it, only succeeding in further confusing myself.
I have to get a root canal on Monday. And despite having dental insurance, I have to pay over $700 for it because apparently my last few visits to the dentist for fillings and a checkup have put me over the coverage limit. Why do I have insurance again?
Sorry to hear that, cat.A root canal isn't a pleasant process, even with today's modern dentistry and pain control.
Is it one of your front teeth or a back molar?
$700 isn't much if it includes giving you a crown over the dead tooth. Crowns run $500 apiece and up.
It's an upper molar. The root canal specialist said he's only putting a temporary filling on after the procedure and then my normal dentist will re-do a new filling. I had a filling done on this tooth in January but apparently the decay was so bad that the decay is right up to the inner nerve, causing discomfort. The nerve is still alive so I'm guessing from what he told me it isn't the more surgical version of a root canal. The specialist called it a "glorified filling", and I've never had a root canal before so I'm trusting that what he says is true and it won't be especially horrific.
I was pretty upset this morning, but I've calmed down since then and $700 isn't so bad considering I should (hopefully) be rid of the pain completely. This morning it just felt like the cosmos was against me. But I'm almost out of that funk and back to "the world doesn't care enough to be shitting on me on purpose".
My wonderful Mom is taking the kid for the day so at least I can go home and sleep afterwards. Still, ugh!
Calibrating the machine, and wrapping my head around the hows and whys, when it's not working right. It's been issue after issue. We've slowly worked through all the problems. I finally cut my first two side flip plus rotary. Finally! A two side flip is where you are cutting a half of a model on one side of a wax tablet, then turning the wax 180 degrees, and cutting the other side of the model. Then, you take that model and mount it to a mandrel on the rotary axis, and cut the models outer circumfrence detail, if that makes sense.
I've had the front plate of the machine missaligned, causing the ball screw and X-axis to "bounce". That was a bitch to narrow down the problem. Then I had to level, or align every axis of the machine within .005 thousands of an inch. Even the rotary table. That was a nightmare.
Then I discovered cutting things on the rotary axis, that it would end .5mm higher than when it started. SO more testing and cutting and this and that. Then we just swapped wires between motor controlers and the problem went away. It's bonkers!
It looks like we have all the issues taken care of, and I understand much more what's going on, that the mill will become useful and finally make me money!
The support and training from the company has been nothing short of fantastic. This includes the 12 hours in one day we spent over Skype, with webcam on the mill, doing the complicated frustrating alignment.
The wax on the left is mine. It's real close, but I still need to tighten up the alignment. It's hard to see in the pic, but the wax on the right was cut by the support guy (sent to me for a job) and mine is a little thin, and the prongs didn't come out well.
3D modelling is getting easier with every job/challenge I face, but I feel it will be a good year before I am moderately proficient and fast, at least as fast or faster than hand carving. But the great thing is, I have only hand carved 3 waxes since I got the CAD software in November. 3D modelling has increased the kind of hard jobs I can do now, that I turned down before, and the best thing...the quality of my work has increased immensely! Business is booming still, and this month is shaping up to be better than xMas. As word gets out that I am doing CAD/CAM work, I have picked up a few more customers. Wheeeeee!
