I'm staying at a friend in amsterdam for a few days which is really nice! Right downtown (bloemgracht, basically right next to the anne frank house). Leaving the house type immediately in a gorgeous street, and you can just get around to most places on foot.

Why on earth would someone pay money to own 40 sqm? That's hardly enough to live in. Oh, I get that studio apartments are cheap options for some people but there's barely any room to move, let alone entertain.
If it makes you feel any better, the cheapest place in my neighborhood is less than 37 sqm for $270k and is a dump. More realistic 1 bedrooms at ~55 sqm run for more like $400-500k. Given that we need 2-3 bedrooms, you can imagine that we're pretty much priced out of the housing market. I think we're moving to Omaha.
We lived in a 42 sq m apartment (granted it had a huge glass balcony and a spacious kitchen) for 4 years, it was great. They may be expensive to buy, but the monthly costs can be much lower, and they're usually very well situated. I had 10-12mins easy walk to uni and later to work, 15-20 mins to town, 1 min to a bus-stop, 2 mins to a great grocery store and 5 restaurants and pizzerias and our monthly expenses for the apartment were about a third of what we'll be paying henceforth for an apartment that's a little more than twice as large. I dunno what things are like in Amsterdam but in many/most Swedish cities, these apartments have also been (for the past couple of decades) very easy to sell at a sizeable profit. Europe is a weird place I guess

I actually wonder about that. I imagine it costs a lot of money to build a house anywhere. How do people make money from building new houses when you can't even sell them for much more than $100k (unless you make it gigantic)?

I honestly don't know, it might be doable - I think it would depend on the desirability of the location someone is building at how much a profit could be made.
In this case, I'd think buy the cheap land, build a house that meets your needs and specifications with some idea of what houses in the area generally have, then sell it when you are ready to move on. I think it would depend on the difference between what you would pay in mortgage/building loan payment vs. local rent - but it would be an enormous hassle, so probably not worth it.

They either 'bought' the land years ago, got cheap RE bank loans using questionable asset valuations, or had a politician in their pocket. Isn't that how Trump turned bankruptcy into fortune?
The land isn't the issue. You could still buy acres and acres of land for a few thousand.

So the Rugby World Cup 2015 is in England this year, with Twickenham as the main venue.
Seeing as we live in Twickenham, we went all out in applying for tickets in the main ballot some time ago. We lost out on all we applied for, except for South Africa v. USA, which is at the Olympic stadium in Stratford, so very disappointed in missing out on Twickenham but at least we got something.
Then we realised there was a local ballot, for Twickenham residents only, which opened some time after the main ballot closed. Again we went all out on applying for tickets, but without much hope as the allocation was tiny.
Found out this week that we got tickets to the final. Hoo raa!
Not only that, got England v Wales in the pool stages, and also the first Quarter Final.
Fucking love it.

It's just awful. I'm sure they're doing it to maximize ratings for earlier rounds, but it really makes no sense... and might make the finals lackluster. This is why the Stanley Cup has been pretty boring for years lately (though this year is an exception) - the Western Conference has far more superlative teams than the Eastern conference, so the real action happens in the conference quarter- and semi-finals. Unbalanced bracket design is bad for sport IMO.

If anyone remembers the pages of arguments about washing machines -- and why I liked a top-load better than a front-load machine (because I could control the water, and use it as a sink) -- this one's for you.
I'm "happy" that I've figured out a way to keep my indoor cat "happy" --- I buy a whole pineapple and let her chew on the spiny stalk. She absolutely loves it, and spends less time chewing (or clawing) on other things like furniture. And when she's done chewing, I still have an edible fruit that's good in lots of recipes.
That's pretty great.
Slightly related - you know the large (both wide and long) twist ties that come around some fresh greens like spinach or kale? My old boy loves to chase and stalk them around the kitchen floor. I found this out when I dropped one while I was washing and preparing them for dinner one evening and decided I could wait to pick it up. Now I always throw them for him to play while I cook. It's nice seeing a senior cat as playful as a kitten.

On the question asked above; no I have not killed anyone yet. But I have turned into this horrible kind of person who snickers when a tourist falls with his god-forsaken rented bike because he got one of his wheels stuck in the rails of the tramway.
That price seems a bit high for a 40m² studio, we own a 100m² duplex also in a very central location, but I doubt we could get €600k for it in the present market.
