You do have a point there. You probably get people who are incompetent and math and have no chance of moving up to the higher-level courses (i.e. you wouldn't get these people if you were teaching those classes).

You have no idea how many PhD forewords I've read with a "profound thank you" for whichever freshman girl they snagged from a student party when they were starting out their PhD/finishing their master's. It's the sort of thing to give a person ideas, really...
That kind of thing is strongly looked down upon here. It might even lead to expulsion if the relationship is with a student in your class.

My sophomore year they capped us at 2GB/day, and I think that was less to conserve bandwidth than to have a "see, we did something" deflection for RIAA lawyers.

Not necessarily incompetent, but the way they teach math at SS isn't....Quite the best for our purposes. I mean, for not so math intensive further education it's pretty great, but it's kind of spoon-fed to them and it takes a couple of months before everyone gets used to stuff like varying notation across text books and what have you. And part of the problem is that we can't/won't have a crash math course for freshmen before the first actual courses start, but that's another barrel of bollocks.

And due to some peculiarities of our system, our program does get about three times the amount of freshmen than we graduate each year. Dunno if that'll change with the new, improved university system, we live in interesting times...

I honestly don't know what'd happen if you actually were their TA, most of these hook-ups tend to happen in student parties and similar from what I know (instead of frats/sororities, we have organizations aimed at various majors and various parts of Finland); ostensibly people know not to sign up to be TA'd by their fuck-buddies.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

Unfortunately, my field doesn't have much in the way of cumulative knowledge, so we have to start from nothing in freshmen and sophomore classes (also, most of the students in those classes aren't poli sci majors). You'd probably have a heart attack if you saw the math proficiency (or should I say deficiency) here.

I don't know if it's just my department, but people hook-up with other grad students and/or university employees. It's very rare to see an undergrad going out with a grad student or a grad student with a professor. When such relationships do happen, negative rumors are spread incessantly.

I have a very limited view, but the larger stigma is in intra-lab couplings, because that's just asking for drama. ("You don't poop where you eat", etc.) No idea how well this generalizes across campus.

There is a taboo against that as well, but I've seen several couples here break it without overly negative consequences (even after the breakup).
Hope is the denial of reality

  7. #37
Yeah, it's the potential break-up that's key. If you make it, cool, you're an item, go fuck yourselves silly, but if it doesn't work out, people tend to take sides and it's just ugly on several fronts.

Look I just wanted to talk about fuckable freshmen what's wrong with you I don't even

These students sound retarded. Isn't it mandatory to take at least calc AB or calc BC before applying to a university? How do they not understand how to find the derivative? I think it's something along the lines of subtract from one power, multiply the original number with the coefficient, and pray to Lord Satan and who your incantation worked.

What makes you say that? I survived all of high school without hooking up, drinking, or smoking. I think I'm secure enough to continue to attend parties for the simply sake of socializing.

In any case. Fuck high school. If you find yourself at a semi-decent university or semi-selective college, you're set. Even the bros are witty and intelligent. It's not high school, unless you hang out with the very bottom of the class and/or enjoy creating drama and watch it fold onto itself and implode.

Back in the states, I didn't even use 5 GB per week. I surprisingly spend most of my time reading newspaper articles, searching books, or trying to improve my writing ability. I do Facebook quite often, but I've also drastically cut down. I'll probs be around 3 or 4 gb.

OK, so I gotta ask. No fucking, no boozing, right? So the point of having friends under those parameters is...?

Seems to match my experiences in humanities, business and engineering colleges over at OSU, so I'm thinking it's an America thing. Puritanical and whatnot about romantic relationships (or heaven forbid, one-off fucking), whereas Europe is much less so.

Not that it made much difference to me, IT/CS is a sausage-fest, and military history studies are completely woman-less, once you get past the intro courses that all the ROTC chicks take, so, yeah, not being gay, that never once came up in all my university days. Bummer. I think I'd have like either side of that coin... banging boots with a tech-geek or military studies graduate as a freshman, or banging a nice, tight 18/19 year old freshman while I was taking those graduate level courses.... mmm. Oh well, you just can't go back. Damn Einstein.

Nope, not even in this country. Hell, they teach 050-level math courses (remedial) at every big university for kids who didn't get geometry and algebra right during high school, and at least at OSU, intro level calc is a 101-104 series you can take to satisfy GEC ["general education curriculum"] requirements. If you're not majoring in engineering or a science that requires higher level math, intermediate calculus is the furthest you'll go, and you can get away with not touching anything above advanced algebra, even over here. Meh.

Oh, so you're getting the whole "using my brain isn't a social liability" thing for the first time. Enjoy that while it lasts.

Wouldn't know about the spotlight thing, myself, preferring the shadows, but whatever floats your boat. Just keep in mind that everyone sees the guy in the spotlight, and notices when he fucks up, or does something that could get him arrested (which these days is anything).

Because they are, duh. Nothing wrong with geeking out, but who the fuck wants to hang out with someone whose whole world is particle physics or organic chemistry, etc.? And that's why the humanities are a good thing to study, and a fun group to hang out with.

I like hanging with the chem/CS/physics crowd. Not the scary nerdy ones; the geeky but know-how-to-act-in-public kind. We used to come up with some pretty good concoctions of booze back in the day too.....and one of my friends still brews mead on occasion.

Based on yesterday, they did okay. And the point was, previous years they've had trouble moving from the Euler notation to the Leibniz one, and based on your post most of them have a much better idea on what a derivative actually is. But sure. And naturally I have no idea how "AB" or "BC" compare to the courses in SS here, so

They're the highschool courses for the college equivalents of Calc I (A), Calc II (B), and Calc III (C). Calc I is differential, Calc II is integral, and I think Calc III is more of the same, but it's been a while since I took the course. If you take BC, then once you get to college you get one more semester of integrals then you do multivariable, I think.

I'm pretty sure Calc courses aren't required for college in the US. I think everything from trig up is usually offered at a college. Probably shouldn't expect to get in anywhere good if you haven't taken extra maths in highschool, though. At least not if you're majoring in an engineering or science discipline.

I don't think I've ever used Euler notation.

I'm still struggling with the Bra-Ket-notation. Yes, I get it's easier. And, yes, I get the concepts behind it. However, writing something like <a| <a| still overloads my brain when I try to decode that stuff.

Over here they're happily switching between Leibniz, Euler and Newton. Most common notation being Leibniz, however.

I went straight from BC calc to applied multivariable calc, so I don't think you need any more single variable calculus in uni.

If you ever took a PDE class you probably did, though to be honest I've never found it that useful.

The first question you should have asked is, did it really happen?

The second question you should have asked is, was this moment a clear indication that Omega was about to hop on the good foot and do the bad thing?

To be honest, you'd think someone of a reasonable level of intelligence such as Omega would seize on this moment. Especially if they're - Young, not so dumb (in this case), Full 'O Cum and in their first month or so of college. Now you could possibly rant on about the 'voluntary celibacy' Omega has placed on his head but from the way he's expressed his new found love for college/home boys/home girls who got beef I would have thought he'd let his inner human nature out and thrust himself into the unknown.

To be honest, I'm quite let down by his comment and lack of spontaneity.

That might be right. That's actually what I typed at first, but I went back and edited because I thought I remembered there being another class before multivariable. All my math courses are starting to blur together.

I am not sure if I used Euler, mostly use Leibniz, sometimes Newton, but in high school we mostly used Lagrange I think.

Many of the engineers are difficult to interact with, they might have a minor case of the old assbugers, but I guess if you've read books, you're naturally going to be wittier and more inclined to talk to others. I still prefer the engineers though. I'm on an engineering floor (i think my roommate and I are the only two commerce studnets) and it's great. We can study whenever we want since they are mainly quiet and don't get drunk every night. so doing homework and studying is easier.

I took BC over a year ago. I'm pretty sure I remember how to do optimization, first, second, and third derivatives, area under the curve, and integrals. I probably forgot the tricker stuff, but i guess I just suck at explaining stuff. What do they cover in your course anyways?

Mhmm, my school required us to take a college-level math class in addition to three years of a foreign language (or two years of two languages) and a few other small prerequisites before being eligible for an advanced diploma. And the track in most high schools in virginia goes pre-calc. Then Calc AB if you took pre-calc regular or Calc BC if you took pre-calc honors. You move on to Multi variable matrix algebra or something during the first semester and the second semester you take linear algebra.

Dude. I'm 17. LOL. I'm not even close to being intelligent. Once I become a jaded misanthrope or a post-grad hardened adult, then maybe you can call me relatively intelligent.

I don't particularly fancy her. I'd prefer having a platonic relationship rather than having a purely physical relationship. Ya know what I mean? And honestly, she wasn't the brightest ever. Honestly, the few girls I've liked have all been a lot smarter than me. It's not like i'm some kind of intellectual masochist, but it's always fun to be able to have someone who can constantly correct you. There is witty bantering and you eventually make it a goal to catch them and surpass them. But that never happens because your counterpart's goal is to remain one step ahead. Ya know what I mean?

Oh, I'll be doing a lot of "thrusting into the unknown." Maybe not into vaginas though. They have teeth!

Yeaaaaaaa....all of this Calculus talk is fucking with my groove. Other than getting to hang out with my future husband in Calc 1, I fucking hated it. It was required for my Chemistry degree, but fuck if I've ever really needed it for anything. The professors taught like they had just been hired off the street; one guy spoke such broken English I couldn't concentrate. Ended up having to retake the Calc 2 over the summer; who the fuck wants to take math courses when all your friends are out partying/working? Ugh. Did I mention I fucking hate Calculus?

As for me and college being 'effin' amazing this place is a proverbial whorehouse. It's easier to get laid here than trying to find a nonsensical line in "The Room." They decided to go with the central planning route by just handing out condoms by the bucket full at all major functions and centers. When you can't beat it, regulate it. Of course being here in the enclave of substance free there's absolutely no action going on whatsoever. Their adherence to religious dogmas has gotten them to the point where they probably don't even understand the function of that 'appendage' down there.

Please, stop. You're embarrassing yourself. And, by extension, me, since I went through the same education system. Though apparently with a rather more significant level of comprehension.

Lol, I have actually significantly reduced my internet usage (mostly because I have an 8 gb cap per week, so sadly no streaming endless porn videos). But it wasn't really my first impulse. It was the first time I got my internet working in a few days. :P

No. like, if you're even remotely knowledgeable, then people think you're this intellectual titan and flock to you. you become the center of the social circle. i've got a few girls who asked me for my number. it's a shame I plan to remaining straight edge and not drinking or maliciously shattering any hymens.
I was just giving you a hard time... As for the hymens.. I think you'll find most have been shattered already . You might shatter some records though! go for it. Don't want to live your life in regret, have fun.. enjoy yourself. Join clubs, study hard, play harder... Drink from the marrow of life.

Catgrll is right this is the time of your life for finding many flings for experience and a prospective mate. you'll never get this wide of choices again.

Meh, I changed my mind. Don't want to risk him accidentally procreating. *shudder*

Though that is an interesting way to look at it; really, college is where you do get a wide variety of people to interact with. It's one of the few places you can test the waters with different types of people with different cultural and personal backgrounds. After that, you usually end up hanging around the same kind of people the rest of your life (depending on your profession and lifestyle of course).

Good thing you like that arrangement, because teenage girls talk, and once words gets out, that hand-penis thing is going to be the extent of your sex life during your college experience. Sounds like a fate worse than death to me, but your mileage may vary, I suppose.

It's not like i'm some kind of intellectual masochist, but it's always fun to be able to have someone who can constantly correct you. Alternately, it is possible these days to have a platonic relationship that involves occasional, irregular, or regular orgasms, which really is the best of both worlds, if you can ever get past the lie that you're only allowed to have one sexual partner at a time, or that you need to get your intellectual stimulation from the same person(s) you get your penile stimulation.

First of all, have you ever thought about why these rules about sexual activity exist, and the peculiar way they're laid out in the Abrahamic texts? About how, for example, there's a lot said about actual sexual intercourse involving penile penetration, but not a single mention of oral sex, or lesbian sex? Or how Abrahamic patriarchs quite often had multiple wives, and this wasn't a sin? Or about that saying in many Muslim cultures: "women are for children, boys are for pleasure?" (It's even repeated by a number of the contributors to the Hadith, incidentally.) Seems like a lot of odd inconsistencies if the real issue Yahweh/Allah is concerned with is sex, dontcha think?

Is it maybe possible, then, that the issue isn't actually sex, but something else? Perhaps, for example, the fact that in ancient cultures with Abrahamic religions, property inheritance followed heredity, and the only way to ensure your property passed to a son who was actually of your seed was to make sure that the only penis to ever enter your wife's (or wives') vagina(s) was your own? (DNA testing not being available at the time.) With women being essentially property, by extension, a woman with a broken hymen was virtually useless and had little chance of being married off, given that no potential husband would have any certainty that his new property didn't come with a hidden son that could swoop in and steal the inheritance of his sons.

When you actually look at the Abrahamic laws on sexual activity, the only consistent, logical way to unravel them is if they're a type of "you break it, you buy it"/"no using the merchandise before you pay for it" policy. This explains why there's a lack of concern about sexual activity not involving vaginal penetration, or why men could and would have as many wives as they could support financially. Because sex wasn't the issue - the issue was property rights and responsibility (don't ruin another person's future by breaking her hymen, unless you're willing to provide for her).

The prohibition on sex outside of marriage that exists [well, sort of exists] in Abrahamic religion is based on ancient customs and behaviors which have been rendered obsolete by technology and cultural changes, so unless you plan on living in a backwards culture that still treats women as property, and only cares about the property rights your sons, these old sexual decrees have no relevance to modern life. And, believe it or not, adhering to those now irrelevant customs is harmful to you if you plan on living in modern society (in a great many ways you're not even aware of, yet).

With all that said, some free advice I'm fairly sure you'll ignore follows.

Do yourself a favor, and honor your god's instructions to do good to your fellow man by going out and having some sex. Make her feel good, (or him, if you swing that way) make you feel good, honor the instructions of your chosen deity and leave irrelevant, ancient customs where they belong, in the past. Not only does it feel good, but it's good for you too.
