At -40 °C your car won't start up at all anyway without using an independent vehicle heater. Both the lubricant and fuel will either be solid or very viscous.
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?

    I found my ring!

It had fallen underneath a radiator. Still a sense of intrusion but quite a relief. Had I been asleep and not been playing a game on my Laptop could have been much worse. Not opening that window again now.

Regarding security: There is one big thing I've been meaning to do and that is get some solid gates installed around the property. We've got fences but pathways without gates. Been meaning to get some gates installed since the last burglary but everyone I spoke to did hollow-style gates which I wasn't happy with so never got around to it, that's now top of my to-do list. Already spoken to a local company that will do it, they're actually on summer holiday until Aug 5 but I'll be calling them again first thing on that monday and getting this dealt with.

Regarding the cars: They have electric blankets plugged in to protect the battery. We were there over winter last Christmas and the warmest it got at night was ~-20C and the coldest I saw it was -43C IIRC so I'm not exaggerating. Where her father works up higher in the mountain it reached nearly -50C while we were there. Different environment to here.

Mazel tov. And people claim playing video games helps no one.
Hope is the denial of reality

They use those hood heaters in Minnesota, too. According to my MN friend, people would bring their car batteries inside on winter nights, back in the 80's. Frozen tundra.

LOL . That "tundra" gets its cold weather in large part from Alberta.

Though the funny thing is that when up there even though it was like ~-30C most days it didn't feel that cold. Probably partially from being prepared and wearing thick winter clothes (her parents all-but laughed at my shoes and gloves I'd taken over) but its such a dry cold that the lack of air humidity means it doesn't feel so bad.

I wonder if the burglars we'll see that as a challenge, and target you more now . I realize it's a scary issue, and actually I think it will be a deterrent, because at first it'll make them realize you're aware of them problem, and watching out for it. Even the fact you woke up and came to check the window probably spooked them a bit from retargeting your house.

The 2 incidents were roughly 2 years apart.

Guess it depends where you are too.
In Istanbul I only close my windows when I decide it's time to turn on the AC or when it's cold outside. Otherwise I let all windows open all the time. Back windows have got iron bars making it pretty much impossible to get in without making a lot of noise, the window on the front could probably be used as an entrance for someone who climbs over the roof or up the facade of the building next door. However, that way of entering would be a bit too conspicuous as my neighbour's seem to have nothing else to do with their lives than sit together in front of their door, drinking tea and gossiping (probably mostly about what goes on in my house).

That's interesting. Rand's in-laws feel safe leaving their doors unlocked (in Canada, with so few people are around), while Hazir feels safe with bars on windows, and nosey neighbors (in Turkey, a more populated area).

No idea how that translates to the UK, let alone the brand new housing development that caught your initial attention (and investment), Rand. But you should take another look at your incentives, especially now that you're married with a new baby on the way.

I used to say, 'In Istanbul you've got quiet places, and you've got safe places, but very few places that are both at the same time'.
    Congratulations America
