Thread: Smell Like A Man, Man!

  1. #31
The new viral seed marketing. As I said, it's brilliant. Since I don't "do" twitter, digg or facebook, it seems strange. But I guess it's the future.

Key to the effort was the response to Kevin Rose, the founder of social network Digg.com. Rose tweeted the Old Spice Man about his own illness that day. Here's the accompanying video response.

Rose was enamored. He tweeted, "Holy sh*t, best get well video EVER from Old Spice." That message went out to his million-plus Twitter followers. A viral phenomenon was born.

The decision to include Rose and the celebrities was no accident. The Wieden team purposefully selected not only persons with huge followings on social networks — followings that dwarfed Old Spice's own — but specifically those with particular credibility and influence over the technorati and social media addicts. The social media kingpins told their followers, their followers told their friends, and the math compounded exponentially, fervently and quickly.

Old Spice's Twitter followers increased more than 1,000 percent. Nearly 600,000 people on Facebook gave its ads a thumbs-up "like it" vote. And, according to Advertising Age, the Old Spice commercials received more than 7 million online views this week alone — and that does not include the viral vignettes we're talking about here.

    The cost of media: nothing.

    TX = Texas, right.

Some people do over-do the scents. You're not supposed to be able to "smell someone" unless you're whispering or embracing. (That would go for perspiration odor and bad breath, too.)

That faux "deodorized" scent (also found in things like "deodorized" garbage bags) is quite unnatural, distinctive, and cloying. I'll assume there are some variants that don't have that distinctive smell, but some do and I can scent them when walking by in the hall (in the absence of over-riding odors from another source, and in the absence of allergy troubles.)

How is it that crazy? It's a pronounced scent. The notion of concealing to appeal isn't new. If there's a distinctive scent used to conceal, then it's sending its own message, isn't it?

Clean is a nice scent, I like all the Fresh Linen and powdery fragrances in products. Crisp cotton shirt hot off the iron is lovely. Bleached white shower towels, too.
    Clean sheets dried outside.

Yeah, that pretty much does it. But knuckle-headed chicks who wear two sizes two small clothing don't seem to get this particular subtlety either. Shocking, I know. But man perfume? Ugh. Better be damned understated and in small amounts.

This begs the question, what will OldSpice do when they lose control of this thing?

Bah, they don't care. They needed an answer the the Axe silliness and they got it.

I live in a desert, and scentless witch hazel can be purchased at nearly any pharmacy.
    Your search had no results.

Too late. Old Spice Guy has already responded to Anonymous.

@ Tear, maybe you're smelling scented pads (not tampons). Or something being carried in their purse.

ew, don't make me think too hard about this.
