I think they're pretty different everywhere, the different subcultures at least. For instance the skaters/goths/punks etc. here will at least still go to school and be productive members of society in their own unique way, and hold a job in order to acquire money and purchase the things they want, whereas the ones I saw when vacationing in Montreal were either skipping school or not holding a job, hanging out in front of the local church, trying to beg for money to buy cigarettes or alcohol, then going home when it rained/snowed.The difference between the US goth culture and the one over here is quite hilarious
As the goth culture here has been popularized and mainstreamed by the likes of H&M, Hot Topic, Urban Outfitter, etc. its become more of a "how you feel about life and stuff" than how someone dresses, since even now the most preppy person can be seen sporting black or dark colored nail polish, spiked accessories, and objects with a black or skull motif...
...sort of on topic, most hilarious thing I've seen was on the train. I'm sitting across from some 40 year old balding business-man in complete suit and tie with polished shoes and leather briefcase talking incessantly with someone on his blackberry about stock trading when all of a sudden his personal phone starts ringing with a music ringtone...

I don't think I've ever been in one of those stores. And I'm going to continue to avoid it now. Surely she can find whatever it is her little heart desires without me having to go to the scary stores.
Do my black toenails say something about me that I don't know? I'm not sure if outlook on life is really what matters. Then again, I don't know. My friends and I mocked the wannabes when I was in high school. And you could even tell who was who while people were wearing school uniforms.

I'm willing to bet Hot Topic would help more than hinder your cause. Its no where near goth, but its spunky, and I'm betting that will win her over. Pink and dark plaid skirts, knee high strapping boots, funky braclets and bookbags.
If you're lucky she might even gravitate towards the gamer wardrobes.
Well if I'm really lucky she'll decide that what she wears doesn't matter at all, but I'm not really counting on that one.

I've never been into Hot Topic. I think there is one at the mall, not entirely sure.
I particularly like Old Navy, because they are cheap - but the clothes are very well made (no doubt by child labor still) and don't wear out.

I believe most goths nowdays are just what people call emos. Emos seem to be into paramore I believe
There is a weird resemblance to Emo and Goth now-a-days. I generally go into hot-topic and they have a different array of things people can buy. Clothing, cd's, and such. Then they have small sections dedicated to fan based stuff like Twilight or Alice in Wonderland (for an example). It's become a more universal store, because you basically see anyone and everyone drop by in there. The only thing I consider riske for someone underage is that they sell women's lingerie, which to some people, could give them awkward questions raised by their kids. :P
It really has changed since I was in middle/highschool. Though I don't think it's a bad thing your daughter wants to find her own style, but I do suggest you watch the friends she'll make in dressing like such, lolli. (it sounds very stereotyped, but I can only speak from personal experience)

I experienced a new breed recently (in terms of groups) called 'Scene Kids'. I wasn't quite sure how tackle the issue as i'm out of the loop with all this 'new age groupie culture' kids these days have. I was told, by a 'rocker', that 'Scene Kids' are people who conform to the current trends promoted by the punk/goth/emo/hardcore music genres in order to appear cool. So apparently when My Chemical Romance was the best thing, they all brought merchandise relating to said band.
These days i find it quite strange how people relate 'clothing' to 'what music you list to'. For example, i usually dress smart casual or smart (work reasons) but while at the gym we was discussing concerts. A mate of mine wanted Peter Andre concert tickets for his missus (or so we are led to believe) and he also wanted Chesney Hawkes tickets some time ago, so we mocked him. Anyway, he was talking about seeing Madonna once and saying it was a good gig. I then, jokingly, said that you've not been to a gig until you've witnessed the might of Metallica. As i had my iTouch on me i showed him some of my pictures i took when i went to see them last. They all looked at me, stunned, and said "We never ever took you for someone who listens to something like Metallica. I'd never go to such a gig, i'd die". They looked at what i was like as a person, the way i dressed and assumed something totally different.
Strange, so very.

People are just funny like that. Grasp on to whatever straws are available. You'd think adulthood would make it go away, but that's one lesson you learned in high school you won't forget, anyway (not you in particular, although I bet you do it to some extent, anyway. I do.)
