Pastor accused of sex attack

A CHURCH pastor accused of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl told a jury today: "It was a banana in my pocket."
David Morris, 60, said the 12-year-old could have mistaken the fruit for his penis as he sat next to her during an English lesson.
The pastor, at Carmarthen Evangelical Church in west Wales, said he was in the habit of putting a banana in his pocket and it was possible the youngster had accidentally felt it.
Prosecutor Geraint Walters QC told the court: "He said one thing he would do from time to time was to carry a banana in his trouser pocket.
"He said it's possible that is what the girl mistook for his erect penis."

The victim, now 26, alleges that Morris placed her hand on his crotch area during a private tutoring lesson.
Mr Walters said Morris became "quite tactile and touchy" during the classes.
He said: "It progressed to tickling on her hand, arm and up her back."
Swansea Crown Court heard he then took her hand and placed it on his groin where she felt a lump.
The alleged victim and her fiancé arranged to meet Morris years later at a motorway service station to confront him about the allegations.
She said: "He arrived and went to sit down. He stood up and took a banana out of his pocket and put it down on the table."
She told jurors that Morris then told her: "This is what you must have felt."
The woman told the court that on the day of the alleged assault she told her mother about it but nothing was done apart from her tutoring being stopped.

She said her family's relationship with Morris continued and that her mother "absolutely adored him".
The woman also claimed that on a different occasion when she was aged 12 or 13 Morris took her and her sister underwear shopping in Swansea after buying them cider at a pub.
Morris, of Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire, denies indecently assaulting the girl between December 1995 and December 1996.
The trial continues.

Seducing the enemy in order to get information that would help save the lives of countrymen has received the blessing of an Israeli rabbi.

Taking such steps goes "above and beyond" and is a "spiritual blessing," Rabbi Ari Schvat said in a written ruling, which was part of a detailed theological analysis looking at Biblical and other sources.

However, the ruling warned members of Israel's feared Mossad spy agency that playing the role of honey-pot isn't straightforward.

"The act of illicit sex with the enemy is almost always forbidden unless there is no other solution, and only after asking explicit religious permission from a leading halachic authority," Schvat told msnbc.com in a statement Tuesday. Halachic refers to the interpretation of Jewish laws.

"If it is necessary to use a married woman, it would be best [for] her husband to divorce her. ... After the [sex] act, he would be entitled to bring her back," Schvat's ruling said.

However, Schvat said it was "more serious" for a man to perform an act in such circumstances. But he added that in the "rare" cases when it would be permitted, divorce would not be required.

Written in Hebrew, the ruling appeared in a study entitled "Illicit sex for the sake of national security" published by Zomet Institute, an organization that studies the overlap between religion and modern life.

In the ruling, Schvat said the current situation for the Jewish state required solutions that are not "appealing to us." Using a honey trap is a way to deal with the danger that Israel exists with, he added.

As Atlanta police continue their investigation into 12 recent robberies in the Virginia Highlands area, investigators are releasing an unusual description of one of the suspects.

Investigators told Channel 2 Action News reporter Erica Byfield that one of the suspects is an “extremely attractive” man. The robberies have all occurred in Virginia Highlands, Candler Park and Midtown, and police believe they may be connected.

“That is terrifying,” said Rachel Sigmon, who lives in Virginia Highlands.

During the so called “rolling robberies,” police believe the men block people in, then jump out with guns.

“That could happen to me if that is happening to people right in the mist of where I live,” said Sigmon.

The latest robbery happened last weekend.

“I think the message is to be aware of your surroundings,” said Erin Ashford, who also lives in Virginia Highlands.

In almost every case, victims have noted a small white sedan and described the suspects as two black men.

“One person jumps out and produces a gun and then asks the victim for their money, jewelry, cell phone,” said Inman park resident Bob Sandage.

Police said they need the public’s help figuring out the make and model of the car involved and who the robbers are. So far, the only description multiple victims have provided investigators is that one man is extremely attractive.

Atlanta police said they are taking the matter very seriously. On Wednesday, investigators and command staff met to come up with a plan of attack.

Byfield is working to get more details on the plan.

The fact that multiple victims are calling their robber attractive entertains me.

The funny thing about it is that this much disliked Netherlands Antilles is has it's national hymn sung (in full) for the last time but one, and to my surprise a lot of the dignitaries are singing along. Pledging their allegiance to a country that no longer will exist in 45 minutes.

Hehe, I just read that the abolition of the Netherlands Antilles means that the US dollar will become legal tender in the 3 islands that as of today have come under direct rule from The Hague . That means that the US dollar soon will be legal tender in a part of The Netherlands

The citizens of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba from now on also have the right to vote in elections for the Parliament in The Hague (the citizens of the NA didn't have that right)

Wizards of the Coast prints a line of Magic: the Gathering books that help tie the storyline of the major cards together. I've got about 30 of these books, usually purchased from Barnes and Noble for list price, $6-$9.

I'm trying to improve my credit rating and make myself more appealing to bank loans, and that means paying off my last credit card. To do that I'm selling everything I've stored and boxed up for the past few years, including these M:tG books. I figured I could craigslist them for $3 or so, and get rid of what I could. Yet for some reason I checked Amazon first, and discovered many of these books are worth north of $20 (ebay shows about the same in bid offerings) especially the ones that setup the storyline before Urza become a planeswalker and the Ice Age time line. So I listed a few on Amazon; now to see if people actually pay these prices...

Some of the books were pretty good, but damn, not 300% markup good.

My book sold today. I'll be shipping it out some time tomorrow or Tuesday. Made $19 after Amazon took their cut, but before whatever USPS is going to charge. I still don't get what I'm missing here

That's just bizarre. Makes me wonder if I could have gotten more money for he huge stack (that should probably be read as 500+, I didn't actually count) of books I took to the used bookstore than I did. Some were probably out of print and such.

There's a letter in the newspaper by a (populist right-wing) politician, on whether or not to negotiate with the Taliban in Afghanistan, it was a reaction to a letter by another politician. Now there are a lot of valid points you can make against that, but he wrote:

[..] Negotiating with your enemy in times of war is pure collaboration. [...] My party will never negotiate with the enemies who have killed our soldiers, our fathers, our mothers, our children.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't almost all conflicts ended by negotiating with the enemy at some point? And he didn't even bother to comment on the examples provided by the other politician (the end of apartheid in South Africa, the troubles in Northern Ireland..). But hey, I suppose that for a politician like him it's good to sound tough.

You'd have to exterminate all enemies, or more importantly show both the willingness and the means to do it. With the Japs, this took nuking a whole bunch of civilians, I guess we could try just fire-bombing the nation with conventional explosives but either way you'd have to kill a whole bunch of civvies which kinda sweeps the rug right under our high and mighty humanitarian effort feet.

The funny thing is that this map is at the same time outrageous and also true. People living in heaven on earth do have this tendency to think that this city isn't really worth living in if you have to live outside of the Singel canal. But what makes the snobbery funnier is that many people who live on the wrong side of the Singel are so sensitive about it. I have this friend who's got a nice spacious flat with a great view of the river, in walking distance to the Central Station. And still we can get him all worked up by saying that visiting him at home is such a journey from the city (heaven on earth) . Election officials in Atascosa County are correcting a mistake on absentee ballots to remove the flag of Chile, which is similar to the Texas banner. Voter Troy Knudson noticed the error.

Knudson told the Austin American-Statesman that election officials congratulated him "for preventing future Atascosa voters from seeing the flag mistake."

The flags of Texas and Chile both have a white stripe on top and a red one on the bottom, plus a single star in the middle of a blue field.

In the Chilean flag the blue is only in the top left corner. The Texas flag displayed the blue all along the left side.

Current elections administrator Janice Ruple blames a previous worker for the mixup and says "We just never caught it."

The election is Nov. 2.
