I had this happen during the update to 8.1 with very unfortunate timing. Couldn't stop it by shutting down the service either. It's possible that Win 10 has magically become much more well-behaved but it should be obvious from context that EJ was referring to his windows experience as a whole which I expect has mostly been win OS:es before Win 10. From Khen's first snarky response it is absolutely clear that he, too, was including previous versions of Windows and has now sneakily decided to only talk about Windows 10 again. The context is "Windows 10" not "totally irrelevant versions of OS" - I mean, seriously, you people gripe about some feature or other without bothering to check whether this very feature has been changed quite a bit in the years in between.

No, the context was an exchange between Ominious and myself about the issue of third parties disabling little old ladies updates because they were annoying them, and I said the solution to that is to make them less annoying, not to remove the ability to disable updates. People then went on a slight tangent to rant about how annoying the updates were in Win 7 or below.
For your records, this is what normal humans sometimes do in normal human conversation.

Booted in Windows 7 to test duel monitor setup, rebooted to get back to Ubuntu and am sat here watching it very slowly install 26 updates.

OK something is really bugging me (as an irritant) and can anyone advise on how to fix it.
Windows 7 implemented one of the best updates in a long time with the 'dock' feature so you can drag a window to the left and it'll take up half the screen, drag another one to the right and it will take up the other half. Or press Windows+left or Windows+right on your keyboard.
One upgrade I was looking forward to in Win 10 is you can have corners and not just left and right. That seems to work as expected but for some odd reason whenever I dock something eg to the left it then puts everything else into some weird tiled mode on the right. Rather than leaving everything else as I had it. Then got to press escape or click to get rid of it. Any way to turn that off?
Its a preview, so you can easily click on which window you want to be docked on the other side of the screen. Since most people docked 2 windows if they are docking one, it makes the process more streamlined. It only happens when docking left and right and only when you already have multiple windows open.

OK that makes sense. It hasn't worked that way last few times I clicked on the windows and since I wasn't expecting it I was getting frustrated. Don't know if matters where you click, I just had it work as you described so came here and then saw your reply.
So, according to the Internet, by default Windows 10 harvests pretty much everything you do down to the keystroke and your mic usage, and anyone on Windows 10 should immediately go to Settings > Privacy and set everything to full scale, raving paranoia mode before your bank details are sold to Columbian drug lords or, worse, online ad networks.
But does it?
Near as I can tell, there are actually a few separate issues which are being presumed to tie together to turn Windows 10 into the biggest exercise in data-harvesting since ECHELON, but I have no idea what the software is *actually* doing with all this stuff.
1) By default, Windows 10 assigns every user a unique ID, which is then used to serve you targeted ads, because of course it does.
2) A bunch of your personal data (browser history, bookmarks, websites you have open, any saved passwords, and WiFi network names and passwords) is, again by default, when you sign in with a windows account synced to Microsoft servers, because of course it is.
3) This:

Cortana is of course probably no worse in this respect than Siri or Google voice search, but in light of 1) and 2) and the fact it's teh evil M$ this has freaked techno-cyber-libertarian types the fuck out.

"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services."
Ass-covering boilerplate or carte blanche to share all your details with anyone Microsoft feels like? You decide.
Personally, I think 1) is pretty despicable in and of itself, but the reading some of the more paranoid corners of the Internet is that Microsoft is using all the personal data it collects including everything Cortana collects (and, really, Cortana needs to collect this info in order to do its thing) and whatever it holds on the servers in order to show you targeted ads and of course to share with Big Brother whenever it gets the chance. This strikes me as more of a stretch.

I love how Cortana works on my phone, its learned my work schedule so it can warn me of traffic concerns going or coming, reads and replies to texts messages, keeps up on the calendar for facebook dates, and it knows what the fox says.

I just finished my work I needed to do after coming home for the day and went to Windows Update on my PC after it and "Upgrade to Windows 10" was ticked by default while all security updates for Windows 7 were unticked. So if I just clicked to install updates without reading it the upgrade to Win 7 would I guess have happened automatically.
Which makes me wonder if those who are set to have Windows 7 updates install automatically would instead be automatically upgrading to 10 now rather than updating seven?
Doesn't happen like that at all on my Windows 7 machine. If I manually tell it to check for updates (they've been set to auto update since day 1) I get the Windows 10 logo and a bolded message asking if I want to upgrade. No checklist shown. If I decline that to view the standard list of updates Windows 10 is not listed at all.

My mum's computer has a Windows 10 logo in the task bar, then you click on it and then there's a 'reserve your free upgrade' button. No option to till it to 'get tae fuck', but it's not trying to force the issue either.
My own copy of Windows 7 is not activated, so presumably I don't get to be upgraded.

Last week the one on mine started popping up aggressively on start-up and every time the computer woke up from sleep. I finally gave in and told it to reserve and am expecting to have to kill attempts to slide me into upgrading before I want to.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"
Got my first system crash last night, on my now-Windows 10 Laptop. Went to make a coffee and a sandwich but when I came back the entire screen was black except for the white mouse outline. The mouse would move around but the screen was just black.
Didn't respond to anything (except for the moving mouse), so eventually tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and the screen went grey (again except for the movable white mouse). Again it wouldn't respond to anything. Eventually I had to force a power reset.
That sounds like one of the many video card driver issues I've heard about. I'm still waiting on AMD to come up with a driver that doesn't make my second monitor blink every time I do something as basic as closing a browser tab or right-clicking.

NVidia support has been pretty shit so far. I earlier predicted a zero-day patch for their drivers; it never came. Windows has always recovered quickly for me, but it's still annoying how crashy NVidia's drivers are right now.
Guess I shouldnt have hope that they will be fixing Surround any time soon then
