You must understand we're working with some pretty interesting definitions of the word "solution" here.

And yet they're the same topic, addressed the same way. One simply has a more attention-grabbing title.

Yet when it comes to racism language is important.

It can be important. Important distinction. Do you know what's not racist? A flat declaration that African-Americans underperform economically in aggregate (no intimation on the cause of that mind you, just the bare fact). You know what's not racist for the exact same reasons? A declaration that white privilege exists, which is merely the mirror of the statement about African-American economic performance. And that happens to be the sum total of the "language" you object to here. It wasn't racist. Blunt yes, racist or offensive not so much.

The guy shot a fleeing suspect in the back five times. On video. You know, the*very thing you're so keen on and which you told us would solve all the problems.

I'm not seeing where "better evidence" would have done a difference. Or what "better evidence" actually would be.

I never said it would solve all problems, I said it would help which is more than the moaners are doing. There is no magical panacea.

Moaners = people who don't think dozens of unarmed black men should be killed by the police each year. Again, your priorities are telling.

I don't think it should happen. I don't know who has said it should.

Maybe that's because video cameras don't*fix the issue of racism?

Apparently there is: pretend it doesn't exist and brand any anti-racist strategy based on the recognition of the fact that racism exists as being racist.

I wonder how much of that applies to the Lewks and Rands (incidentally, this is probably the kind of stuff taught in the whiteness class).

"Individualism: Whites are taught to see themselves as individuals, rather than as part of a racial group. Individualism enables us to deny that racism is structured into the fabric of society. This erases our history and hides the way in which wealth has accumulated over generations and benefits us, as a group, today. It also allows us to distance ourselves from the history and actions of our group. Thus we get very irate when we are “accused” of racism, because as individuals, we are “different” from other white people and expect to be seen as such; we find intolerable any suggestion that our behavior or perspectives are typical of our group as a whole."

No shit Sherlock. Whites are taught to see themselves as individuals... yeah like pretty much everyone in the world is. Liberals treat race like a team sport which is all sorts of fucked up. If a black person does a crime it does not mean all black people are guilty and liberals will scream bloody murder at the very thought of that being repeated and yet when it comes to white people's racism from the past...

The the other issue it that geography and social status matter A LOT. A poor white guy in Russia has a vastly difference experience than a wealthy white guy in Florida who also has a different experience as the white middle class guy in Germany. This 'shared experience' as part of race is barely applicable on the global landscape. It absolutely makes sense for two guys in the same neighborhood to have shared racial experiences but to talk about it at national or global scale is absurd.

I don't think individualism vs collectivism is a white vs black thing. I think it's a right vs left thing. Also a right versus wrong thing too.

Damn right I see people as individuals and I will never apologise for that. Treating people as individuals rather than a characteristic they have no control over is the right thing to do, treating people differently based on their race is racism. The idea that there is shared experience is patent racist BULLSHIT. I'd rather be a wealthy black westerner than an impoverished white Estonian.

If the racist whiteness class teaches racist idiocy like we are collectives not individuals then I was right that it was a racist class.

You've not rebutted any of my comments and the so-called defence of the course by Loki in the quote just demonstrates how vile and racist the course is.

Do you agree that we are individuals, or do you believe we are part of a borg collective based on our skin colour?

I don't intend to engage you until you put in the bare minimum of effort required to get an idea of what the course is about.

All this talk about individualism is ironic and funny, given that human beings, regardless of what we think we do, exercise very little of it. Indeed we appear to be incapable of doing so to any large extent. lol But let me guess, you all are out there on the cutting edge of life and society, forging beliefs and making decisions all on your own, making your own path in the world, right? lolol.
    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

It's not directly, but that doesn't mean its neutral in its impact there. People still label, themselves and others. The point is that white people rarely think of people, themselves or others, with a "white" label. But by and large they do think of non-white people with a label. But even the most individualist and non-labely black person is not going to be able to go through life without being affected (negatively) by other peoples' use of the "black" label.

Damn right I see people as individuals and I will never apologise for that. But that's comparing apples and oranges. You find racism in the ceteris paribus comparisons. How does the wealthy black westerner compare to the wealthy white westerner? How does the impoverished black guy in a Paris banlieue compare to the impoverished white guy there?

Yep, and there are plenty of courses that use titillating titles to get students to take and PAY for them. Marketing 101 meets Liberal Arts, academic mashup. If you're required to take electives, in order to meet your degree requirements, that can mean anything from "How Rap Killed Music" to "How Hitler's Art Led to the Holocaust". Ok, I made those up, but the point remains --- the class title doesn't always reflect the course content.

Maybe Rand doesn't know how the US system works, and is basing his opinions on his own UK experience?

You're right. We don't really forge our own paths, or make our own decisions. Every behavior is influenced by something else, including overriding innate instincts. We stifle burps and farts in public, sneeze in our sleeve, use utensils to eat, and don't fuck without consent --- but only because we've learned that from other people and cultural norms.

Our very existence depends on the ability to "sort" danger, fight-or-flight, and that often means using stereotypes we're not even aware of to define perceived threats. Humans are more animalistic and tribal than we like to admit in the 21st century. We have an international space station, Watson (the computer) is doing a medical internship, and cars can drive themselves. But we seem to be more politically polarized and culturally segregated than ever. We can't even agree that racism is real.

I think you are missing the points being made.

    1. The way skin color impacts a person is unique - therefore making generalities about it is foolish. The example used were people who have VAST differences their 'black' or 'white' life based on geography and wealth.

    This leads to point #2.

    2. Either you make assumptions about people based on race - and are therefore racist or you don't. Do you automatically assume every black person you come across is a criminal? Do you automatically assume very white person is a racist? Deciding that people are 'likely' to behave a certain way simply because of skin color is obviously racist. Its complete and utter bull shit to treat people differently solely based on skin color. Treating people as individuals is what people *should* be doing.

  28. #238
Lewk, white men aren't even treating white women as their equal, so what makes you think they'd treat non-white/ethnic minorities as equals?

Which shows that racism isn't more potent than literally all other factors in a hypothetical individual's life combined. When did that become the standard for whether racism exists?

    This leads to point #2.

But they're not doing it. And the course endeavors to point out that they do it, or take advantage of others doing it, without requiring overt actions or even thoughts on their part. The result is racism even if one person involved acts in accordance with your highest tenets of "indivdualism."
