The controls weren't as precise, but the Wii tried the swing stick to controller light saber and the motions got old really fast. Plus with the lack of joysticks, its forces the game to use a "on rails" design

The Microsoft E3 conference starts in about 10 minutes. Thats making me happy.

Microsoft just showed off their Star Wars Kinect title.
Rails to the extreme , looked like the only movement option was to jump; besides a push to move aside a heavy war machine, all the player kept during was swing his arm back and forth.

But holycow, the kid actors are ridiculous. FISTBUMP!

English, my fine young friend, English.

What does Rails to the extreme mean?

Tim, think of House of the Dead games at arcades. Or in a more literal sense, think of a roller coaster.

  8. #2618
The game sets the pace and the direction. All you do is shoot, and sometimes some quicktime button mashing (Press X now!).

In the Kinect sense, that means swing your arms, and jump.

The Microsoft Press Conference was so disappointing, so much time wasted on shitty Kinect titles. That Fable game looked like absolute shit, I'll never remotely believe anything Peter Molyneux says again. Star Wars title was more of the same crap.

I think the biggest problem Microsoft is encountering with Kinect (games) is that the idea of the peripheral is to be able to interact with games in ways controllers just can't. If you're going to market and push controllerless gaming, you have to make the games better than they would be with controllers. I know they have this "Better with Kinect" mantra, but aside from simple things like voice implementation in Mass Effect 3, almost none of the other games needed the peripheral.

Dance Central is a game that stands out as the perfect utilization of Kinect, because it's something you absolutely couldn't have the same experience with with a controller. New crap like these Fable and Star Wars games would benefit so much from a controller because they're the exact same kinds of games we've been playing with controllers for decades; taking the controller away only strips away complexity and difficulty, giving you a lifeless, boring shell of a game.

E3 is watched by hardcore, committed gamers. The mainstream isn't aware what titles are demo'ed and announced, so why spend so much time and focus on family/mainstream games, Microsoft?

I do like how they are using the voice part of kinect. That ghost recon game used it perfectly for going through menus and with ME3 giving out commands to your troops.
Now they need to do better about combining that voice work with a controller...

The part about rendering objects into the game via the kinect could become useful, but the finger tracking was a joke. Thats was not true finger tracking

and not even a mention about possible future hardware? Unless Sony somehow manages to not suck again this year, this E3 is going to be all about Nintendo.

I'm liking Sony's conference a lot so far. Their new 3D display wasn't super impressive...until they said that co-op would be possible without split-screen via this new technology that allows two people to look at the monitor and see different things. WTF?! This is possible?!

  12. #2622
I thought it was "possible" with any 3d device. Instead of the glasses tuning each eye to a different frame rate, the glasses themselves sync at different rates (trading 3D for privacy). Like multiple RC cars running at once.

The presentations are going smoothy. The teasing of the NGP was getting annoying. But the presenters all seem bored or unexcited. Someone light a fire under their asses!

NGP an AT&T exclusive? bullshit, I'm glad the audience laughed at that.

Combine with directional sound, and you can watch adult movies while baby-sitting.
Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?

3D Mariokart, Super Mario, StarFox, Luigi's Mansion
Free Legend of Zelda Four Swords, free 3D Pokemon augmented reality game.

oh, and this, the Wii U

Looks a little large. easily larger than a cellphone, looks to be a little larger than a 7" tablet (screen is 6.2")
but holyshit, the way they demoed it, this thing is insane!

and they just announced cross platform play for Smash Brothers for the Wii U and 3DS

My son says the Pokedex from the 3ds update is pretty cool.

And I played excitebike for the memories - it's still not all that fun.

I must be a lazy gamer; I don't want voice recognition (my finger reflexes are faster than my speech) and 3D is eye strain and nausea. I'm an old fart

So far I've only seen it used in squad based games. And its a lot easier on the gamer and the programmer to throw squad commands to the kinect instead of trying to layer them to the Dpad or something.

Ya, I guess it makes sense. It's not like you'd play a Kinect game after the kids are in bed, so yelling out "Alpha team, go!" probably isn't an issue. For some reason it didn't process in my head this was for Kinect game only, not Xbox as a whole.

The new Tomb Raider game looks fun.

Yes, I became a proper geek and turned the teevee to G4 today.

Then we went to the pool and now we've switched to Food Network.

New memory came today. I've been on 4GBs since Vista, hoping 8GBs holds me over for just as long. Love how easy it is to upgrade with AMD. 4GBs of DDR2 memory to pair with my existing 4GBs was a hell of a lot cheaper than having to upgrade to a new motherboard, CPU, and memory standard in order to use DDR3. I expect in a year or so I'll pick up the last of the AM3 line before having to replace the motherboard and memory again.

Just made 90 cupcakes and a mini "minnie mouse" cake, 18 cupcakes were a little over cooked so only frosted 72.

I am tired, but man, do they look and taste good!

Seeing my family and friends in San Diego tomorrow. I've missed the city! Austin's cool, but we don't have an ocean.
