"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
What do you do to all the cops who were aware of what was going on but did nothing?
Hope is the denial of reality
Depends on the level of evidence. If you had the same video footage of them admitting 'oh yeah we do this all the time its what we do' than I'd think it falls under some sort of obstruction of justice law. At a minimum fire them. Again - with proof, which is likely not common.
Speaking of which - aren't you glad that body cams are now more common? Even if the appropriate action *isn't* being taken in terms of convicting these guys for planting evidence at least the innocent party isn't going to prison. You should celebrate the small steps instead of just crapping on successes like you are want to do in police threads.
These cases illustrate how body cams are being used to corrupt justice. These are just the idiots who got caught. Even if you believe that these were the only people engaging in this kind of behavior, they put several people in jail partly based on body-cam footage, before those cases were dropped. No matter how you swing it, there's a high likelihood of innocent people being arrested, jailed and convicted, and an even higher likelihood, now, of guilty people going free.
"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
So anything short of ideal should be constantly attacked? No one is suggesting that the system is perfect, we should be applauding steps in the right direction. Do you think body cams are good or bad? If you think they are good, and body cam used has increased, progress is being made.
Short of ideal? 400 unarmed people being killed each year and rampant discrimination against non-whites across every type of police interaction? This is like saying "why are you so upset with slavery? we banned whippings."
Bodycams were used in 10% of the shootings. And none resulted in a conviction this year. We already had this discussion. People like you will always find an excuse not to convict. Even here you're hedging against punishments to police departments who knew damn well what was going on.
Hope is the denial of reality
Any cop perverting the course of justice should be sacked and imprisoned. End of.
Good that the use of body cams is revealing such corrupt cops to get rid of them. That's the idea. Though still it relies upon the cop turning the camera on - as I've said repeatedly this should be moot. The camera should permanently be on unless there's reason for it not to be (eg the cop is at the toilet etc).
