Thread: RomneyRyan 2012!

    Default RomneyRyan 2012!

Republican Romney names Paul Ryan as running mate

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has named conservative Paul Ryan as his running mate in November's election.
Mr Ryan, 42, is a congressman for his home state of Wisconsin.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty had also been tipped to run with Mr Romney as vice-presidential candidate.

The BBC's North America Editor Mark Mardell says the decision is a bold and ideological choice.

Recent opinion polls suggest a close race between Mr Romney and President Barack Obama in November's poll, with Mr Obama tending to have a slight lead in most surveys.

Analysts say Mr Romney will be hoping to regain momentum in the campaign after a series of pro-Obama campaign advertisements attacking his record.
Courtesy of Auntie Beeb, but this is all over the place

So! Things just got interesting. After floundering in the face of a baseless hear-say accusation for what, over a week? the Romney camp decided to make the race a referendum on domestic/fiscal policy, instead of teasing Mittens about his taxes.

Now, this is a) yet another hilarious contribution from the gift that just keeps on givin' 2) horribly frightening and with a potentially disastrous and depressing outcome after all the Pubbie voter obstruction hi-jinks. Captain RomneyRyan will drive USS Austerity right down that Gilded Drain; corporate dystopia and A Handmaiden's Tale for some, tiny American flags for others! But will the base respond well to a Mormon/Papist ticket?

Coincidentally, do any of our resident Randroids have second thoughts about their predictions in the forum prediction thread on who's gonna nail POTUS?
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

I said it'd be Obama and I've not seen anything to change my mind.

I'm not even expecting it to be close, though I'd prefer it if RomneyRyan won. Maybe Ryan for 2016?

I wish he had chosen Portman, the Senator from Ohio. Ryan would be a solid VP, but he makes too easy a target for Obama's allies in the media who will continue to ramp-up their left-wing advocacy-journalism over the next 87 days.

Ugh. *shudder* I don't know what to do this election time. It'd be nice to have a third party that was viable. At this point, I'm at a loss. I don't think I can vote for either party.

I don't know, to be frank I can't imagine Romney winning no matter who he picked, but I think Ryan would make a solid POTUS and hope this'll boost his profile for next time.

How much he believes in what is not really determinable, but his past voting behaviour might answer your question partially

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential pick, is a virulent denier of climate science, with a voting record to match.

A favorite of the Koch brothers, Ryan has accused scientists of engaging in conspiracy to “intentionally mislead the public on the issue of climate change.” He has implied that snow invalidates global warming.

Ryan has voted to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from limiting greenhouse pollution, to eliminate White House climate advisers, to block the U.S. Department of Agriculture from preparing for climate disasters like the drought devastating his home state, and to eliminate the Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E):

Paul Ryan Promoted Unfounded Conspiracy Theories About Climate Scientists. In a December 2009 op-ed during international climate talks, Ryan made reference to the hacked University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit emails. He accused climatologists of a “perversion of the scientific method, where data were manipulated to support a predetermined conclusion,” in order to “intentionally mislead the public on the issue of climate change.” Because of spurious claims of conspiracy like these, several governmental and academic inquiries were launched, all of which found the accusations to be without merit. [Paul Ryan, 12/11/09]

Paul Ryan Argued Snow Invalidates Global Warming Policy. In the same anti-science, anti-scientist December 2009 op-ed, Ryan argued, “Unilateral economic restraint in the name of fighting global warming has been a tough sell in our communities, where much of the state is buried under snow.” Ryan’s line is especially disingenuous because he hasn’t been trying to sell climate action, he’s been spreading disinformation. [Paul Ryan, 12/11/09]

Paul Ryan Voted To Eliminate EPA Limits On Greenhouse Pollution. Ryan voted in favor of H.R. 910, introduced in 2011 by Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) to block the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas pollution. [Roll Call 249, 4/7/11]

Paul Ryan Voted To Block The USDA From Preparing For Climate Change. In 2011, Ryan voted in favor of the Scalise (R-LA) Amendment to the FY12 Agriculture Appropriations bill, to bar the U.S. Department of Agriculture from implementing its Climate Protection Plan. [Roll Call 448, 6/16/11]

Paul Ryan Voted To Eliminate White House Climate Advisers. Ryan voted in favor of Scalise (R-LA) Amendment 204 to the 2011 Continuing Resolution, to eliminate the assistant to the president for energy and climate change, the special envoy for climate change (Todd Stern), and the special adviser for green jobs, enterprise and innovation. [Roll Call 87, 2/17/11]

Paul Ryan Voted To Eliminate ARPA-E. Ryan voted in favor of Biggert (R-IL) Amendment 192 to the 2011 Continuing Resolution, to eliminate the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E). [Roll Call 55, 2/17/11]

Paul Ryan Voted To Eliminate Light Bulb Efficiency Standards. In 2011, Ryan voted to roll back light-bulb efficiency standards that had reinvigorated the domestic lighting industry and that significantly reduce energy waste and carbon pollution. [Roll Call 563, 7/12/11]

Paul Ryan Voted For Keystone XL. In 2011, Ryan voted to expedite the consideration and approval of the construction and operation of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. [Roll Call 650, 7/26/11]

Paul Ryan Budget Kept Big Oil Subsidies And Slashed Clean Energy Investment. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) proposed FY 2013 budget resolution retained a decade’s worth of oil tax breaks worth $40 billion, while slashing funding for investments in clean energy research, development, deployment, and commercialization, along with other energy programs. The plan called for a $3 billion cut in energy programs in FY 2013 alone. [CAP, 3/20/12]

Depressing when someone this antiscience is considered normal.

Paul Ryan appears to be a proper right-wing on economics conservative, as opposed to the Sarah Palin right-wing on religion one. The big times he's ever been in the news that I've seen have been on the economy.

Democratic austerity is increasing spending by 10%. Republican austerity is increasing it by 9%.

Coincidentally, I do wish people stopped buying media hype. This decision will have a minimal effect on the election (if it has any effect at all). It will stop mattering to a vast majority of the population within a few weeks. Unless a VP candidate is astoundingly bad, people will not vote for or against someone just because of the VP choice.

Obama is out-spending Romney about 3:1 right now. He's not legally allowed to spend his funding until after the nomination is formal which isn't a problem for Obama.

Romney is consistently out fund raising Obama. They knew that was going to happen from the beginning. Which is why Obama is spending so much now, which isn't the norm. They are hoping to build up numbers and ride on that. Romney was going to own the advertising in the late game even if Obama didn't advertise now.

Fingers crossed then Romney may actually have a chance, my certainty on Obama is one prediction I'd be very happy to get wrong. Doesn't make Nessus's statement any less than completely and 100% wrong though. Besides who knows, Obama's fundraising may pick up once more.

Romney's numbers were sinking across the board before the VP pick. One reason they spent so much effort on hiding his VP pick was to limit the amount of time Obama would have to taint the name before the board flipped. Obama's campaign was spreading horror stories about the VP's medicare coupon system within minutes of that announcement. VP pick doesn't mean much to most voters, but it was a sound decision of Romney to deflect attention away from his tax problem and how he isn't connecting with voters. If Obama continues to go after the VP this gives Romney a few weeks for the media to forget about all his problems before he takes over the advertising channels.

It was a smart and brave move as well to pick such an excellent running mate, America is now in the rather rare position lately of having a real choice between two very different economic ideologies.

On the one hand you've got Obama and his belief in the Magic Money Tree proposing to keep on spending like there's no tomorrow and there'll be no risk or harm from it.
On the other hand you've got a pair who're willing to stand up and be honest about the need for cutbacks and how they'd make them to fix the problems (which were in large part caused by big-spending Bush not just Obama).

Unfortunately its always easier to vote for candy than gruel and I fully expect the Magic Money Tree to win the day, even though its got no possibility of really working.

I'd hardly associate Romney with anything even slightly related to being honest. Even McCain called him on that.

The first Bush tax cut was affordable. The second tax cut and the prescription drug benefit I opposed both at the time and I haven't changed my mind.

Ryan may have voted for them then, but that doesn't mean they were right or that he was right then. It is good now though that he's turned away from that sort of action and gone back to reality.

What a dishonest way of looking at the numbers. You're intentionally ignoring the money that Obama raised before Romney won the nomination, a time when Obama was raising tens of millions more per month than Romney. That money didn't magically vanish.

Because it might have a marginal effect somewhere. Considering how little control the candidates have over the final results, that marginal effect is the most they can reasonably do. Coincidentally, by far the best use of money is to get campaign supporters to knock on people's doors and persuade them to vote that way. That's something that costs relatively little but is manpower intensive, and something that Democrats have a huge advantage in due to union support.

Probably a desperation move to solidify the base. Not the best pick, but not exactly a disastrous one. I doubt it makes much of a difference (it probably won't in Wisconsin, where Romney is down 7%). Picking a popular figure from Ohio or Virginia or picking a Hispanic might have mattered more, but this all assumes a much closer race than we're seeing right now.
