As I said above, we Amanda got me 3 cute Russian Dwarf Hamsters - which we called Pepe, Mocha and Mojo. Mojo died after just a week and I came home a few days ago and Pepe was lying dead, actually inside their food bowl and Mocha was not stirring at all. We had a plastic house inside the cage on its second floor and although they'd ignored it for the first few days Mocha had adopted it has his own home and moved in (carrying the bedding etc up with him). Pepe was definitely dead and Mocha seemed to be dead inside the house.
I felt really sad at this and didn't want to straight away dispose of the bodies so I decided to put a towel over the cage (hide them from view as it was sad) and the next day I went to dispose of them.
Pepe (previously dead in the food bowl) had moved. At first I thought I must have shaken him about (I'd moved the cage to next to the bin). Except then his middle was opened up and his bloodied rib cage was showing. WTF?
Picked up Mocha's house and shook it about gently trying to shake him out. Out started to slide his stiff-looking body. So I tapped him and he jumped and started stirring. Glad he was alive, but then it dawned on me that Mocha must have dragged Pepe about and tried to eat him :Puke:
Cleaned out the cage thoroughly, put Mocha back in it and he was really distressed. Constantly cleaning himself which is a sign they're nervous - which I'm not surprised remotely at
. Poor guy, I'm worried now that whatever's killed Mojo and Pepe may get Mocha too - especially after he's eaten a bit of Pepe. They're still babies and hopefully he'll be OK it was just them being infants or whatever but I don't want to have to have 3/3 pets die in 3 consecutive weeks. OTOH every time I see him I get this image of what happened with Pepe
I'd read a while back that hamsters can be canibals, not nice to see at all though. Went out for dinner with my family and my mum got Chicken and BBQ Ribs and through the whole meal while she had her ribs I kept seeing Pepe's exposed rib-cage. As you can probably imagine that really turned my appetite. Don't want to tell anyone what I saw either, not sure how Amanda would take it.
