    Thanks lads

We read the latest data on atmospheric CO2 concentrations with great concern

but remain resolved to find an effective, equitable and timely solution to these existential threats

I will try to limit photos to important dates and events Our daughter was born on Friday the 13th, under a full moon, and this along with several other pieces of circumstantial but compelling evidence has led us to conclude that she is almost certainly a witch. Two weeks in and it feels like she's changing literally from one day to the next. It's exciting, even though rules being arbitrarily changed--without warning--every single day is a quintessential feature of tyranny. She looks like a mix between my wife and my mother, fortunately with only the slightest hint of my, er, rhinic misfortune. She's already mastered toad and rabbit styles, and is making steady progress on tiger style. She has a beautiful smile, but all the evidence suggests it's a sure sign she's about to poo. We're all enjoying learning about one another; initial sleep-deprivation notwithstanding, our confinement to this magic baby-bubble has, already in this very short span of time, brought enjoyable changes of perspective on many things, and given us a lot of positive energy. I've learned to sleep while sitting up, a skill I never thought I'd master. It feels good being able to solve problems as they arise, and accept the things that we can't--and probably don't need to--solve. Obviously we haven't the slightest clue how much more challenging this is certainly going to get, but suddenly priorities are much more easy to sort out: baby first.

If all goes well, my wife and I will both be home on paid parental leave until the end of November, after which she'll continue on her own until Spring while I resume working, and then I'll take over for my 8 mo stint at home. Can't get over just how luxurious it is to be able to spend so much time together at home. The weather gods have blessed us with an absolutely beautiful Autumn, and so we've been able to adjust slowly and comfortably to our new life, with increasingly long walks and relaxing activities. She sleeps a lot, and we still occasionally sleep in shifts, so I'm confident I'll be wasting much of my time on the internet for many more weeks to come, but I'm also taking the opportunity to catch up on reading while they sleep. Life is good albeit vaguely terrifying

Parenting is like half-assing everything and realizing that it's okay.

Eight months of leave? Damn that's amazing.

Total of 480+10 days per child, uniquely generous—and we have vacation & comp time on top of that, which usually adds up to a couple of months or so per year for me. thinking of doing a writeup once things settle down and I know more about all the pro-fertility/pro-children policies.

Congrats on not having to sleep for the next 3-4 years.

But then it gets better! or at least at 7.
Ugh... young kids, small problem... older... I'm starting to imagine. >_<

We spent some planning and sent the kids to 4h kindergarden when they were ~2 and 3 years old.
I don't regret that an inch. It's a generous leave we have here so might as well make the best of it.
I'm not going to have strangers raise my kids!

Now they are at school between 8-(13)15, then one of us usually fetch them.
The oldest one walks home alone, I got camera and alarm setup so I notice him when he gets home.
It's a 10 min walk for him. My younger will probably require some more time since we are not all born equal.

    Easy to install?!

  16. #4066
Yeah, about 30 minutes in tinkercad, 3 hours to print and it literally just clips in.

Most people I know are all about passing Malthusian anti-fertility policies.

  21. #4071
But why would you want an anti-fertility policy?

"When I meet God, I am going to ask him two questions: Why relativity? And why turbulence? I really believe he will have an answer for the first." - Werner Heisenberg (maybe)

  22. #4072
They believe it's the only solution to promote socialism and eco-consciousness.

    But that's a cute kid!

I expect they haven't thought it through and that their views would be very different if their personal circumstances were different, eg. if they'd settled in Northern Europe.

We've been visiting my family and friends down south, and I've been surprised by how much of a sense of community a new baby can evoke. It's been great letting her meet everyone. She is excellent pro-miscegenation propaganda because she's much smaller than the average Swedish baby, whenever I've carried her around while out and about, people have been in equal measures delighted and horrified, because they think she's a week-old preemie.

She's also been working on her acting skills:

None of these are poo-faces afaict. It took three weeks before we could catch one of her fleeting smiles on camera, but she's much easier to trick into smiling now. I'll have to find a better lens for the camera so that I can use that instead of my phone.

It took a surprisingly long time to convince procreator-in-chief that infant smiles are gas or poo (or both!).

    But she's very cute

Cute kids, nice pics. No offense -- but I've never understood why people post pictures of their children on internet forums, TWF included.

    Merry Christmas!

    She's mostly adorbs

but sometimes she goes full Gollum

Often has way, way too much to drink

And is extremely easily shocked by the most innocuous comments

From many angles she looks like nothing so much as a tiny vaguely disconcerted monkey, but, when she looks at us... it's all we can do to remain composed in the face of that searing-hot blast-furnace of personality.
