You can't build a forest, but you can plant it, maintain it. As is true for most forests in the more populated parts in Europe. It's not like you're dealing with untouched parts of the amazonian rainforest. Most of those forest in the UK are still there because some chap had shooting animals for a hobby.

You can plant some trees, but you can't plant a forest. It takes hundreds of years. This is Freshman biology: transition zones and all that.

Classic short-term economic expediency. This is thinking in the few year time scale, not decades. It will be a loss that isn't worth the short term gain.

Well if the fuss that was kicked up over the Newbury Bypass 15 or so years ago is anything to go by, people in this country won't settle for any old willy-nilly felling of trees without suitable public scrutiny or enquiry.

I seem to recall it was this protest, one of the largest ecological protests in European history, that gave birth to the term; eco-warrior, though I may be wrong.

Well, that's the funny thing about selling something. You get no say ever again.

Huh, I thought it was the Greenpeace dudes in their rubber boats zipping around in front of whaling spear cannons. Just my impression, I have no clue where it comes from.

Edit: you may well be right

Ancient Greece also didn't fare too well when they took the wood for building ships. It's not as if deforestation through human actions is a new concept with unknown results...

... and hell, the Amazonian rainforest also deals well with cutting trees. [/sarcasm]

Yes, always a good idea to cut down forests on a large scale.

Exactly... sure, maybe they should be able to cut down relatively short-lived trees (for instance, areas where there are a lot of fires and/or wind)... but cutting down many thousand year-old trees or even hundreds year-old would be a terrible mistake.

On the surface, I once bought a forest. The parasites claimed that the land belonged to God, and demanded that I establish a public park there. Why? So the rabble could stand slack-jawed under the canopy and pretend that it was paradise *earned*. When Congress moved to nationalize my forest, I burnt it to the ground. God did not plant the seeds of this Arcadia - I did.

Nice hysteria in this topic. You people have funny ideas about what a forest is in a densely populated country. Scandinavians seem to do ok in the forrestry department too.

Yeah, but Scandinavia also doesn't raise Golf courses and resorts on the deforested areas. They rather tend to replant the trees they cut down.

Are you kidding, please check the density of my region first
