    Default Coughing

Every cold ends in the same misery for me; coughing. After the last symptoms of a cold disappear I start coughing and that can stay that way for up to 2 weeks. Sometimes so bad I get close to throwing up, sometimes so bad I resorted to using codeine for it. Just wondering if anybody else has this and what remedies you use.
    Congratulations America

Ginger Ale works for me when I have a cough, believe it or not.

I've never had it bad enough that i've needed a remedy for it. Sounds awful though, you have my sympathy.

Yah, I've had coughs that last for a month. Water is best imo

I go through this, too. Definitely don't try to hold it in. I drink water, but it doesn't seem to do too much.

Hazir, is it worse in the morning? Allergies usually trigger coughing till I vomit in the mornings. I have found mint mouthwash helps stop it from getting to that point. Even the very strong mint gum, or Altoids has worked. I think the mint soothes, or desensitizes the little cillia that are trying to rid themselves of mucous.

No, well, there may be that as well, but peppermint oil calms the stomach. It's a proven remedy for indigestion as well as nausea.

    I don't have asthma.

And thanks for the tips other people. I'm gonna try out what works for me.

Try a doctor. I'm telling you, this is not something you have to suffer through. You probably have a strain of opportunistic bacteria in your lungs that flare up when you get a cold. A course of antibiotic will clear them out. It worked for me.

I used to have that, repeatedly for a stretch of maybe 8 years. I used to cough some times to the point I couldn't sleep and I was convinced this is how I would die when I got older. Then my wife talked me into seeing a doctor about it and he diagnosed me with bacterial bronchitis. He prescribed an anti-biotic which cleared the immediate case up in a day or so. Then I never got it again. A miracle.

Honey, lemon juice, and whiskey is better than any non-prescription cough suppressant you will ever find.

Ugh, this WYSISYG editor is sweaty balls.

If it is recurring bronchitis, shouldn't he take a course of anti-biotics? Instead of whiskey.

He said it was the tail end of a cold.

He also said he was coughing so much he felt like puking. That doesn't sound like a nagging residual cough. Clearly more information is needed, but shouldn't he see a doctor? I mean, should he have a make-you-puke cough for two weeks after every cold or is this a concern? I used to get the exact same thing. All other symptoms are gone but a cough that just won't stop - can't sleep, make your chest sore, gagging cough.

I'd assume he'd know if he needed to go to the doctor because of it, though.

In Finnish, we have expression, "if sauna, vodka and tar don't cure it, it is fatal"
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Tar as in cigarettes? Is this why your health care system isn't crumbling under the weight of the elderly. There isn't any weight...?
