    Default I am in the UK

    Trainride was in the dark so rather uneventfull in a train that came accross a bit shabby. I don' t know who did ST Pancras station but it looked quite good. Once I figured out which trainservice to use it was quite easy and fast. I was even a bit impressed by the quality of the service. I am in Rochester right now, which seems like a cute little town. Lots of CHAVS of either gender in the High Street.

    Now, let' s see what other new things I can learn about this country.
    Congratulations America

    Their cars are backward, so they drive on the wrong side of the road.

    Keep away from the natives and you'll be fine.

    Tell them you're looking to hang out with some "New Yorkers". That's apparently code over there for "Jew".

    Soon I will go outside to explore the area, the city is for tomorrow. Today I'll have to buy some pies and I am looking ahead at a party where there will be like a 5:1 female male ratio. And I am not straight

    Of course I'll also have to buy a T-mobile simcard. I'll do that at a place called the Pentagon in Chatham. Chatham is one of the places where the Dutch took an effort and demolished parts of the English fleet.

    I have a 5 GBP note right in front of me and I can tell you the money is UGLY. I'm surprised Elisabeth II didn't sue the people responsable for her portrait on it. Otherwise it looks like the designer couldn't make up his/her mind about what kind of a look he wanted for the ensemble.

    I understand the BoE promised many many more of these ugly notes this year.

    Haha! £5 notes look shabby. £10 notes are boring. However £20 and £50 notes look really good.

    Anything looks better than American money though - how you guys tell the difference between a $1 bill and a $100 bill when you're drunk and in a dark bar, I'll never know.

    The number of zeros gives it away. If you're too drunk to read numbers, you're probably also too drunk to walk, reach into your wallet, or sit upright.

    Shame you couldn't experience places such as Bath, Bristol, Lake District and even our east coast.

    As for our money, couldn't care how it looks as I hardly carry cash these days. However, for the hell of it, the £5 is ugly!

    Yeah I'm aware that he's not American. I was having a dig at the yanks on the forum.

    Lolli - yeah the 00s does give it away. However the beauty of having different coloured notes is that you don't even have to pull them out of your wallet to know their value. It makes paying for drinks and getting drunk even easier

    english notes look better than euros, which in turn look 100 times better than dollers

    seriously, american notes are so fucking stupid

    it's not even funny.

    actually, the fiver is a bit shit now that you mention it.

    but we are the only nation to pwn religion with our currency:

    religion is pwnd
    When the sky above us fell
    We descended into hell
    Into kingdom come

    let us examine this further

    firstly you have your euros

    you can clearly see both size and color used to determine the difference between denominations.

    your pound sterling notes

    again, notes of different denominations are distinguished by size and color

    and you have your US dollers

    ffffffff
    When the sky above us fell
    We descended into hell
    Into kingdom come

    Pic is broken, rendering your point completely invalid.

    The size thing is actually kind of annoying to me. The pretty colors are helpful, I guess, but I'd still rather look at the numbers.

    Amerikan money is dumb, though. This is why we use plastic. I don't even carry cash anymore (I do have a handful of dollars in my dresser because my son tends to announce he has a loose tooth immediately after he pulls one out).

    I think American notes look awesome and better than any other bills. I just don't like the "In God we trust" slogan.

    I really like the Australian $100 bill though:

    Bahamian dollars are quite pretty, very artful. Lots of ocean fish and colors. US coins are more interesting than our bills.

    Hazir, how did you manage to find Turkish girls in the UK?

    If you look through a magnifying glass you will find part of the poem "The Man from Snowy River" printed in very small text in the background. It is pretty cool that they can print the text so small, and your garden variety counterfeiters have trouble reproducing this.

    [Edit - The Man from Snowy River is a poem by Banjo Paterson which, while attempting to tell the tale of a race to recapture a prize horse from amongst a herd of wild horses for money and fame, he (and his poem) became a part of Aussie folklore.]
    The Man from Snowy River
    by
    A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson

    There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
    That the colt from Old Regret had got away,
    And had joined the wild bush horses --- he was worth a thousand pound,
    So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
    All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
    Had mustered at the homestead overnight,
    For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
    And the stock-horse snuffs the battle with delight.

    There was Harrison, who made his pile when Pardon won the cup,
    The old man with his hair as white as snow;
    But few could ride beside him when his blood was fairly up ---
    He would go wherever horse and man could go.
    And Clancy of the Overflow came down to lend a hand,
    No better horseman ever held the reins;
    For never horse could throw him while the saddle-girths would stand,
    He learnt to ride while droving on the plains.

    And one was there, a stripling on a small and weedy beast,
    He was something like a racehorse undersized,
    With a touch of Timor pony --- three parts thoroughbred at least --
    And such as are by mountain horsemen prized.
    He was hard and tough and wiry --- just the sort that won't say die ---
    There was courage in his quick impatient tread;
    And he bore the badge of gameness in his bright and fiery eye,
    And the proud and lofty carriage of his head.

    But still so slight and weedy, one would doubt his power to stay,
    And the old man said, "That horse will never do
    For a long and tiring gallop --- lad, you'd better stop away,
    Those hills are far too rough for such as you".
    So he waited sad and wistful --- only Clancy stood his friend --
    "I think we ought to let him come," he said;
    "I warrant he'll be with us when he's wanted at the end,
    For both his horse and he are mountain bred".

    "He hails from Snowy River, up by Kosciusko's side,
    Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough,
    Where a horse's hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride,
    The man that holds his own is good enough.
    And the Snowy River riders on the mountains make their home,
    Where the river runs those giant hills between;
    I have seen full many horsemen since I first commenced to roam,
    But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen".

    So he went --- they found the horses by the big mimosa clump ---
    They raced away towards the mountain's brow,
    And the old man gave his orders, "Boys, go at them from the jump,
    No use to try for fancy riding now.
    And, Clancy, you must wheel them, try and wheel them to the right.
    Ride boldly, lad, and never fear the spills,
    For never yet was rider that could keep the mob in sight,
    If once they gain the shelter of those hills."

    So Clancy rode to wheel them --- he was racing on the wing
    Where the best and boldest riders take their place,
    And he raced his stock-horse past them, and he made the ranges ring
    With the stockwhip, as he met them face to face.
    Then they halted for a moment, while he swung the dreaded lash,
    But they saw their well-loved mountain full in view,
    And they charged beneath the stockwhip with a sharp and sudden dash,
    And off into the mountain scrub they flew.

    Then fast the horsemen followed, where the gorges deep and black
    Resounded to the thunder of their tread,
    And the stockwhips woke the echoes, and they fiercely answered back
    From cliffs and crags that beetled overhead.
    And upward, ever upward, the wild horses held their way,
    Where mountain ash and kurrajong grew wide;
    And the old man muttered fiercely, "We may bid the mob good day,
    No man can hold them down the other side".

    When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull,
    It well might make the boldest hold their breath,
    The wild hop scrub grew thickly, and the hidden ground was full
    Of wombat holes, and any slip was death.
    But the man from Snowy River let the pony have his head,
    And he swung his stockwhip round and gave a cheer,
    And he raced him down the mountain like a torrent down its bed,
    While the others stood and watched in very fear.

    He sent the flint stones flying, but the pony kept his feet,
    He cleared the fallen timber in his stride,
    And the man from Snowy River never shifted in his seat ---
    It was grand to see that mountain horseman ride.
    Through the stringy barks and saplings, on the rough and broken ground,
    Down the hillside at a racing pace he went;
    And he never drew the bridle till he landed safe and sound,
    At the bottom of that terrible descent.

    He was right among the horses as they climbed the further hill,
    And the watchers on the mountain standing mute,
    Saw him ply the stockwhip fiercely, he was right among them still,
    As he raced across the clearing in pursuit.
    Then they lost him for a moment, where two mountain gullies met
    In the ranges, but a final glimpse reveals
    On a dim and distant hillside the wild horses racing yet,
    With the man from Snowy River at their heels.

    And he ran them single-handed till their sides were white with foam.
    He followed like a bloodhound on their track,
    Till they halted cowed and beaten, then he turned their heads for home,
    And alone and unassisted brought them back.
    But his hardy mountain pony he could scarcely raise a trot,
    He was blood from hip to shoulder from the spur;
    But his pluck was still undaunted, and his courage fiery hot,
    For never yet was mountain horse a cur.

    And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise
    Their torn and rugged battlements on high,
    Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze
    At midnight in the cold and frosty sky,
    And where around the Overflow the reedbeds sweep and sway
    To the breezes, and the rolling plains are wide,
    The man from Snowy River is a household word to-day,
    And the stockmen tell the story of his ride.

    That's really cool, a poem on a bill! (Also a great movie)

    There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with good old American dollars! All you have to do is read the number in the corner, and you know what you are spending. Of course, now America thinks it has to "follow the leader" and color the bills. The $5 looks exactly like what I remember Monopoly money looked like! I absolutely hate the color shit on the bills. There was nothing at all wrong with the money the way it used to be, then they started dinking around with it, first with the $100 bill, then the $50 bill, then the $20 dollar bill, (altho this one made me some money once, right after they fucked up the $20, when i paid with a $20 and got back change for a $50) then the $10 bill, and now the $5 bill. I wonder what kind of stupid shit they will pull with the $1 dollar bill! With my luck, they will just discontinue it completely, since I rarely have a bill larger than a $20 and the $1 bill seems to be my bill of choice!

    I could sure see where it would be easier on the travelers to have a common currency world-wide. The Kid said he had a hell of a time in Sweden, trying to convert US money into Swedish money. He was almost scared to buy anything because he couldn't figure out how much things really cost. "In real money" was his comment, even tho I tried to tell him that, to the Swedish, their money was REAL money! lol

    You will have to take pics, Hazir, and post them for those of us who will probably never travel to the UK. Have a great time!

    The Australian dollars are good because they are plastic, so they are less likely to get torn/worn down in the wash. Though few really carries that much cash these days.

    ^^Yeah the material is pretty good. I just hate the coins, since they have that awful metalic smell to them.
    As for carrying around cash, I rarely carry more than $20 with me. If I need something I'll either pay by card, or take out a small amount. I've never been mugged, or had my wallet stolen, but still better to be on the safe side. I even have two accounts with my bank, one that can't be accessed via my eftpos card (which is where I keep the bulk of my money when I'm paid) and the other account that I'd transfer money to and withdraw/pay from.

  27. #27
    I generally only use cards anyway, but it is safer and better to have it obviously colour co-ordinated.

    To any American: If you have different types of bills in your wallet/purse and want to withdraw one of a particular denomination without showing anyone around you that you have more notes still on you, how would you do it?

  28. #28
    Turn around so they can't see inside your wallet?

  29. #29
    In a crowded bar? That's seriously more sensible than them all being instantly and visibly different?

    Most people kept their bills in numerical order, back when people still carried cash.
