So ... entertainment sub forum for your books, music, movies, vid games, porn etc?

    I vote ... boooooo

Books and music suit a single thread. There are soooooo many books and sooooooo many bands and tunes, that having a single 'what you're reading now' or 'what you're listening to now' thread is more than adequate. If a book or tune mentioned in those threads piques someone's interest, then a brief discussion tends to follow.

Movies, at least mainstream ones, tend to be viewed by a far larger chunk of the forum, so each movie tends to suit its own thread and each movie warrants a much longer discussion.

Vid game threads are rarely mentioned.

This is how CC has always worked and has worked well.

So if we were to have an entertainment sub forum, you'd have one giant book thread, one giant music thread, an occasional movie thread, and a rare vid game thread. It'd be a dead sub-forum.

Leave this general kinda shit for General Discussion homeys ...

EDIT: Guess this poll coulda shoulda woulda gone into Site Discussion, but whatever. More sub forums confuses me - another reason to have less of the farkin things.

    More sub forums is bad

    But

And it physically hurts me to write this

I have to agree with something Chaloobi said

Megathreads hurt the quality of discussion. Outside chatty threads. An entertainment sub-forum would lower the bars on people making threads about specific books, and genres.

But on the other hand, natty jackasses would make fawny faggot threads about every blithering movie they saw at the local and oh dear Christ who would want to read that sub-forum

I'm really divided here! I don't want a subforum for idiots, but I'd also like more talk on literature.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

I don't care a lot about it, but I care about you. And if it means that much to you, I'm firmly against a sub-forum!

Sub-forums are a good thing, with moderation and according to need. I think it's too early to have an entire christmas tree of sub-fora right now. If we get thousands of posters and hundreds of topics then probably it's a good idea to split off entertainment and culture but right now it seems a bit too early for me.
    Congratulations America

I think an entertainment sub-forum is a stupid idea. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

And anyone who likes it is off my Christmas card list, if I ever have one.

Seriously, though, why on earth would we need it. You want to rave about the movie you watched, make a fucking thread. Isn't that kind of the point of general chat? Or would we prefer the OFFICIAL food thread?
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

I don't think it makes any sense to create more sub-forums while activity is as low as it is. Maybe in the future, when we're getting more than a total of ~200 posts day, we can reconsider it.
Hope is the denial of reality

More serious. I agree with Hazir. It's not like the 3 section we have are bulging from streams of posts right about now, and should it ever happen that there are a lot of threads made which can be categorized (doesn't have to be entertainment per se) then we can always decide to have a section.

While everyone knows Denial is the Reality of Hope.

I don't think its a good idea. The book thread became a mega thread becausing it is a topic about books in general. If a new book that was really popular were to come out it would have its own thread...like District 9 does. If a "Suggest a movie" thread were started, that would end up like the book one. A whole entertainment subforum is unnecessary. If you do that you might as well start a Cooking/Food subforum, and a Pictures of Stuff subforum as well. Please, do not take this seriously, those two are bad ideas.

As minxie poo says, we do have some cranky bastards on our forum (not that this is a bad thing), so if the goal is to grow, any new members will be put off by the immediate replys from our welcoming comittee.....

However, as we all came from a gaming forum, I think it makes sense to have a entertainment forum... eventually. Something with books, movies, games, etc. But right now traffic is still low and we can easily keep track of everything in three forums. Hell, I think three is too much right now.

Yes, clearly we need as many subforums as possible.

We can make one for idiots only. And forbid those idiots entrance to the other areas, where adults (or reasonable facsimiles) can discuss whatever happens to come up.

it's like you guys have never seen a working online community outside of CC!

i think the debate forum should be renamed "loki is wrong forum".

also IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME

    ie. threads about movies

    also about shows
"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."

  15. #15
I approve of renaming the debate forum.

I like Loki is a dingdong better, though.

I'd imagine there will be a thread about Lost in the near future, Minxy, because I'm rather likely to have a comment or two to make and hours before Nessie gets to watch it.

edit: What I generally see in forums is that people tend to stick to just one section, and don't venture out of their preferred one very much. Part of what made the CC work is that we actually could discuss more than one topic.

I made a thread about the last season of BSG four days before it started

    But that was BSG

I don't think there needs to be one.

I'll look at the odd thread on something in this section but I wouldn't really look in it much if it was separate.
You'll also probably get a lot of "What's your favourite..." threads if you have a separate board.

i've mostly only seen that on CC. everywhere else, people've used at least the general forum and the entertainment forum. on CC we had a community that developed within a single forum, but this is a forum that's developing within a community

No Sub forums yet, community to small ....

  20. #20
And I was going to type up this big ole opening post for why an entertainment subforum would be a nice addition.
Oh well, I'll just do my part to turn the General chat into one if we can't get one started right away.

Indeed, not now but maybe later.

I don't think there is enough entertainment content posted here to warrant a sub-forum.

    So no.

We have, but as multiple people have pointed out, there needs to be rather more traffic before it will be justified. Genuine traffic, not spam-generated, so don't go getting ideas.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"

I have seen many online communities, I have especially seen many failed and dead forums.

Most communities tend to draw posts inevitably to one or two forums only, unless (like at Atari) its different people posting in each one. Since we're the same people, we can use the same 2 forums - its not like we're being flooded in threads currently.

If it gets too active, then a sub-division could work. 3 forums for Serious, Not-Serious and Tech seems the best outcome right now, with long-term the Tech forum probably not being too active. Entertainment falls under not serious.

  27. #27
To be honest, grow as the community grows. I personally do not see a need for more forums however.

  28. #28
Forums should have as few sub-forums as they need. If we find that one forum swamped with traffic of a particular kind at the expense of everything else then a sub-forum would be needed. Otherwise, I see no benefit in more sub-devisions.

We need a NSFW sub forum. Timbuk2, and Spawnie's butt could have raised eyebrows at my workplace.
It would be a great place to post our favorite porn, and graphic material.
