Or Team UK would work just as well as Team GB (nobody shouts COME ON GREAT BRITAIN anyway).
Given we've been GB since before Irish independence, it is weird.
If this was the intent, this was very well done

That second one looks more like a Quidditch field.

And Tolkien did base Hobbiton on the green and pleasant English countryside in which he lived, just as Boyle wanted the opening scene to represent the very same.
Comparing Saruman tearing up Isenguard to Isambard Brunel's industrial revolution might just about work too, from certain points of view.
And I'll even accept Bean/Gollum, freaky man that Atkinson is.
But Liz and Théoden? That's taking the biscuit.

I despice that the Norwegian channels spend so much of the time on cycling. It's like 6 hours seeing the same view, and doesn't become interesting until the highlights anyway. So many better sports could have been featured than boring cyclists.
Sharapova is reclaiming her position as the most sexy athlete of all time right now, btw. First set down, one to go.

A man has offered his spare Olympic seats to a couple who travelled from Australia to watch the boxing but found their original tickets were fakes.
Ann and Graham Smith travelled to London from the Gold Coast in east Australia, but found their tickets had been bought from a bogus website.
After reading their story, a man from south-west London, who wants to remain anonymous, contacted the couple. Mr Smith said: "I'm overwhelmed by his generosity."
Two more scandals. The first one, South Korea represented by Shin A-lam was tricked of her silver / gold medal when the judges failed to call the time right as Heidermann did a last match winning attempt to score in fencing. The second one, the judge in the current handball game between Sweden and Norway. Thankfully Norway is winning, but he has made so many horrendous errors by now it's emberassing.

The fact that handball is in the Olympics, while baseball/softball is not is itself a scandal.
Hope is the denial of reality
Has NBC gotten anything right yet with regards to the Olympics?

but he did end up getting kicked out of the olympics for calling the other team ""mentally handicapped retards"

Hopefully we won't see him in our team again.

I think it is weird too that baseball is not part of the Olympics. Saying it has more of a right than handball is bullshit though. Handball is played in most European and in some Asian countries. I guess it is due to that the U.S. not playing it, that you think that way. Well, what I'm trying to say is that baseball is a lot more centralized sport than handball, in the way that mostly the U.S., Japan and Latin American countries play it at a high level. And guess what? The U.S. won't even send their best players, because of the Majors is the only thing worth winning. With that attitude, I can't really sympathize with them when the sport isn't included. Although sure, I love baseball, and would like to see it there.

How many countries play each? Same reason Cricket isn't an Olympic sport.
Normally comments on news sites are inane rants, but love this one from the second linkPublicly listed work email address != private email address.NBC has issued a rebuttal statement . . . . .which it plans to share in about 7 hours.
It was not that one-sided as you make it out to be. The result after the final round stood in doubt. But Shin A-lam was asked if she agreed to a time extension.

Hamburg - it was the most disputed decision at the Olympic Games in London: Britta Heidemann ensured her victory in the semi-finals through a hit in the last second against the South Korean Shin A Lam. Enraged protests by the trainer of the South Korean followed. Only after more than an hour had passed, the victory of Heidemann was acknowledged.
Chairlady Barbara Csar from Austria was insulted heavily via the internet as a result. "You're a racist", one twitter user ranted. South Korean users also made her email adress as well as her telephone number public. "I got the impression that Csar never had any control over the duel. A laughable scandal" wrote another twitter user.
Csar did not make a mistake, however. With a score of 5:5 during Sudden Death, there had been two double-hits inside the last second. Thus Csar demanded an examination of the clock by the judges, who determined that there had been a technical error. But when athletes were asked by Csar if they were willing to repeat the last second fight, both accepted. Heidemann scored a hit, the South Korean lost by the rules.[...]
I don't see the "trick".
And how many countries besides the US do have a professional baseball league?

2008 Olympics had 8 competing countries. It was 3 votes short, out of 104, to be included in 2012.
Level of participation was not a deciding factor. MLB's decision to not allow its players into the Olympics, and the widepsread doping were.

I also wonder how many countries have serious equestrian competitions. Or beach volleyball.
And the reason for the ban on softball?
Hope is the denial of reality
Not included != ban. Who's pushing for softball be included?
Remember that technically the Olympics is not primarily for your regular professional sports; thus football has many, many restrictions on who can play making it completely different teams entered to those who'd go to the World Cup.
I like how you list only the "National Competitions" for handball - and completely ignore the huge-ass table above that one which lists five continental federations which each have at least 9 member countries. Which also lists the international competitions...
Did someone just try to skew the numbers? Yes, someone did.

softball is more heavily an american sport, but even then it only failed to be included by a single vote.
"In a field where an overlooked bug could cost millions, you want people who will speak their minds, even if they’re sometimes obnoxious about it."
And yet the stated reason for why baseball isn't included is because the main US baseball league preferred to send young players instead of established stars (i.e. pretty much what happens in soccer).
And Khen, I guarantee that there are far more professional baseball players than there are professional handball players. Baseball is the main sport in much of the Caribbean and the northern part of South America. It's also incredibly popular in South Korea, Japan, and more recently, Taiwan. Certainly many more people care about what happens in baseball competition than in handball ones.

Icky, almost all european countries, and probably a lot more outside, have very serious equestrian competitions. Not sure about beach volleyball, but given the popularity of volleyball and scantily clad ladies, probably a lot. Both are a lot more popular than baseball, definitely more than softball.
Beach volleyball is actually pretty new as a serious competitive sport, which is probably why one American team hasn't lost in 3 Olympic tournaments. It was included at the urging of Brazil, where it is popular.
I'd like to see you sell out 15 stadiums, each containing 30-60k people and costing an average of over $50 a ticket, 180 times a year for an equestrian event. Perhaps we can also compare the number of people who wear baseball hats/jerseys with those wearing equestrian items?

They're more crowded than baseball matches here, for sure Also, that's a stupid comparison (the hats and scarfs) because it's not a team sport, so there are no team sweaters or whatever. But, for example, ice skating is really big here as a sport, but you won't see anyone walking around on his iceskates or in a tight spandex suit. Doesn't mean it's not very big here.
Look, it's voted by countries, apparently, and apparently too few countries voted for baseball. Don't forget baseball really isn't big here. So hate the world for not loving baseball everywhere.. Equestrian stuff definitely gets more TV coverage here, too. I could name more famous Dutch horse riders, and horses, than worldwide major baseball players, and I'm not alone (and I think there are a bunch of famous Dutch baseball players too, after all our team beat some big countries at the world cup or something.
Also, I bet you there are more horse clubs than baseball clubs, worldwide. So?
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!
So the Olympic people had a problem with the MLB putting in similar restrictions on their own players that the Olympic people currently enforce against soccer?
Apparently European members make up a near majority of the Olympic Committee members. And of course they find a way to stick it to the Americas and Asia.
It's not voted by countries. It's voted by a secretive committee that's anything but representative of the world and that does anything but represent global interests. Those members do quite well for themselves though, as the voting for Doha made clear.

I can count the number of elite under-23 baseball players on one hand.
