Thread: Guild Wars 2

    Default Guild Wars 2

Am I still allowed to make threads about individual games? I hope so.

So Guild Wars 2 drops about a week from now. I preordered. I'll admit though, that I'm operating almost entirely on borrowed excitement. OG seemed to really enjoy the first one, and Timbuk and Minx and some others seemed really excited about the new one - I remember Minx talking excitedly about GW2 years ago. So...why's this so awesome? Is one of you still planning on starting a guild or whatever? Can I join? I'll be a good minion, I promise! (also: how do I join?)

How does this game differ from normal MMOs, other than the lack of monthly fees?

I watched two hours worth of youtube videos about it with my cousin, who's played WoW for years, and he thinks it's mostly another WoW clone. There are parts of the game that sound pretty good, but they're generally not major parts of the game. The actual guild component of the game seems to be minor (smaller than in WoW), the crafting system doesn't seem particularly useful, and the combat system is only marginally different than in WoW.

So beyond the reasons that get repeated over and over by the developers, generally about topics of marginal importance, can someone tell me how this game will be better than WoW? And no, changing people's level to let them quest with their friends (or fight against enemies), not have to worry about quest chains, and more frequent world events isn't sufficient.

What made GW so much fun for me is coming into it so late and seeing all the pop culture they threw into it, since they never truely stopped messing with the game. They continue to add quests and tweaks even now.

I haven't spent much time reading into GW2 mainly because I don't have the cash to be buying new games and I don't want to spoil it. I still don't know if they figured out a way to make the single single player friendly since they reportedly dropped the hired help idea that GW had.

I do know that they are making waves over at Blizzard. Blizzard is dropping several patches for their WoW and D3 games the same week, and they have been pushing out nonstop teasers for the D3 patch, which they haven't done for the previous ones. I take that to mean GW2 has something worthwhile.

No, you're not. You're a horrible person and should be ashamed of yourself.

I pre-purchased it - should be fun. World vs. World looks interesting and since I don't have as much time as my slacker friends the option to bring everyone to rough parity in instances allow us to group together. (In other games they always out level me).

Tread lightly, that sounds like a lot like Communism to me, Lewk.

Not really - its just an option to group together regardless of hours put into the game. The time vs. award should be equivalent.

A system that diminishes personal success and rewards failure?

    Casual play is not failure

Guildwars was not about one's level. The cap has been raised higher, to make people feel like they are accomplishing more, but the core concept of play hasn't changed.

Sure, they may even the leveling, and the skill points that comes with that, but its still going to reward grinding and sidequests with those more powerful skills that you won't be able to get otherwise (besides from the cash store).

Apparently preorders get to start tomorrow night. There was talk before of people on here forming a guild. Anyone still doing this? If so, pick a world.

How many people are actually going to do this?

By the way, any idea if it would be possible to play this in England if I buy the US download version?

Quick web search says it'd be okay, but I accept no liability for any problems this might cause you.

I know some IRL folks... going to play on a server that starts with a letter M (i think). So probably count me out unless that happens to be the server you guys go in on.

According to the wiki, guilds can be cross-server, so that's probably not a show-stopper. You can also join multiple guilds. Though I assume it'd be more fun and there's more stuff you can do together if you're on the same server.

I see, looking at the list of worlds the only M must be Maguuma.

This game is rather different from the original Guild Wars games, but it's retained much of the spirit of those games. It's still nice for casual players, of which I am one the customisable storylines show great promise and make for very very many hours of RPG fun. I haven't done much PvP yet because I'm 1. still trying to get a feel for the new gameplay 2. because PvE is very fun and I love to explore 3. the world is absolutely beautiful as before, it's easy to team up for both PvP and PvE.

On the face of it, gameplay is kinda different from that of the original series... but they seem to have managed to keep the core of the original game's best aspects. It's still very fun to plan and test builds, with the added advantage that builds in the new game are much more flexible and versatile (and, therefore, more fun). The whole game has been designed to help players be more active. Any player can heal or resurrect (the more players resurrecting a person the faster it goes), and so death is more fun than in many other games. Before you die, you enter a downed state in which you can still fight, and if you kill something you can then rally from that state.

Combat is fast-paced and varied. The original series heavily rewarded exceptional speed and timing. This game does, too, but it also seems more friendly towards casual players. The game rewards strategic positioning and movement in a way that its predecessors never did. I find that aspect a little tricky, but I'm also not much of a gamer. Although there are many shared elements, each class also allows for a different style of combat, for those who enjoy exploring thematically different styles of playing. I think that the Necromancer (with the new Death Shroud mechanic) and the Engineer (with the traps, turrets, etc) are among the most interesting... but all the others have been very satisfying to me, so far. The potential for synergy is very nice. It's very clear that the game designers have set out with the goal of helping people play satisfying games no matter how crazy they are wrt character-building, which is fun for those of us who love to experiment.

I can't say much about the crafting because I've never cared much for/about crafting in any game. I either use what I find or what I receive as quest rewards. From what I've gathered, the crafting system is continuously being improved, like everything else in the game, and I'm looking forward to trying it out.

The comparisons to WoW are inevitable, but most reviewers I've come across have considered GW2 to be very different from WoW, except in the sense that the designers have learned from WoW as much as they have from other MMOs. GW2 is an organic development of GW1. The departure from WoW's questing system is huge for some people, and meh for others. I personally have thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic events, the impromptu "questing" and the progression through the branching storyline. I've especially enjoyed the cooperation with other players. PvP excepted, coming across other players in GW2 is almost always nice and fun. People help each other, for the most part.

I was worried about the changes to leveling, at first, but it turns out that ANet has stuck to their philosophy about grinding for leveling. Going from level 50 to level 51 is about the same in terms of time and grind as going from level 60 to 61. I like that. I also like the fact that the entire game is the "end-game" some people don't like the thought of combat being challenging when they're fighting in low-level areas against low-level mobs but I like that.

There are a lot of comments about how differences between GW2 and WoW are only minor or "not enough". I'm fairly sure these views are--for the most part--uninformed or biased, judging from high-profile reviews and impressions as well as player reports from the BWEs. That being said, even if all the differences were minor they would add up to significant improvements wrt playability and fun. And not having to pay monthly fees is just awesome

I'll be focusing mostly on progressing through the storylines and on exploring, at first, but I'll take the occasional break to romp around in WvW too. Not yet all that interested in structured PvP (eg. GvG), may become more interested once/if I get a headset! Haven't decided yet which server to pick. Swedes were at Shiverpeaks but may have switched. If you guys are interested in playing the human, Sylvari or Norn storylines, and in exploring a great deal, holla

Oh yeah, the human, Norn and Sylvari dances are the best in the game

Yep, I'll most likely be on board with any guild that comes about.

Didn't play the first GW, so will come into GW2 with fresh eyes.

Bit disappointed that the combat sounds like it is much the same target-lock spam-click-fest that WoW was.

This is one of the reasons why Tera is so refreshing, combat is superb, there is no target lock-on; movement, aiming to hit your target and dodging your opponent's strikes is paramount to winning your battles.

Tera is tiring a little now though, too filled with anime-kiddies, and the quests are entirely generic, leaves you cold and uninvolved much of the time.

So, GW2. I do like exploring new MMO worlds; I do like grinding, levelling, crafting, cooperating, PVPing, mindless guild banter; pretty much all aspects of MMOs.

Would help if we were all on the same server I'd have thought. MMOs don't normally restrict Yurpeans logging onto Murikan servers nor vice versa, and from what Wraith has researched, seems fine. I'd be happy on a US server.

I'm on leave after today for two weeks, off to inject some cash into the Portugese tourist economy from thursday for 8 days, so have a couple of days before then next week to get up and running. If it's out in the UK next week that is, damn, need to check.

EDIT : 28th Aug its out here, so tuesday. Perfect.

GW2 has auto-attack but it's more like Tera in its emphasis on movement, dodging, jumping, positioning, considering the range of your particular weapon, etc. I tried playing it old-school and kept getting killed until I realised just how much those things matter

Downloadable version available on the 28th, same as off the shelf.

You get yours tomorrow in Swedistan?

  28. #28
Go to the Guild War website. Should be able to find a retailer there who gives early access to Brits. Short of that, you can buy it from Amazon US.
