Thread: Operation 'Together' In Afghanistan

So let's set up shop and strip-mine the place!
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

    Yeah, good luck with that.

Even moving turbines for a hydroelectric plant 112 miles was a major military operation when it was attempted in 2008, and included using pathfinders to establish find a route clear of IEDs and left over soviet mines, a elaborate decoy operation involving a fake convoy guarded by an elite assault regiment and 400 Afghani soldiers with British support forcibly clearing the last part of the route of Taliban. As of 2009 the turbine still hadn't been installed because Taliban attacks prevent the delivery of the concrete needed.

So I'm sure stripe mining will present no problems whatsoever.

Genocide first. Strip mining second. Its the only way. Its really all just a media problem at the heart. Shut down global media, including the internet, and then you can do genocide like in the good old days. You never heard of a bunch of tribal maniacs stopping the US from exploiting the West.

Exactly. Though it'd be more efficient if the Taley-ban people could be captured, they could be used to clear out the mines, but their women and children would do in a pinch.

You don't have to shut down the Intertrons, dim-dum, no one cares about the lives of the Afghani people, and now there's iPods and bombs to be made!

This is where you run afoul with your own cynacism. A LOT of people care, all over the world. Open genocide would never fly nowadays.

As far as clearing mines with prisoners, I'm gonna say no. Its too dangerous to workers we bring in to have live natives working anywhere nearby. Kill everyone, any unexploded ordinance or left-over mines can be dealt with using simple mine-clearing machinery. The work could be contracted out, paid for with mining profits.

    "Cynicism"

The apathy your citizens have displayed towards the majority of the "human rights violations" etc lubral nonsense your gubment has been manufacturing is nothing short of overwhelming. And even if the lard-asses manage to rise up to huff and puff angrily for a few moments before collapsing back into the wheezing, greasy heaps they are, no one cares. During the civil rights struggle in the sixties and before, when the radical left etc were moving the masses for the first time, the gubment got scared because the phenomenon was new. Now? They know that protests don't mean a gods-damned thing. Even if Chomsky et al pitch a fit and some soccer momlets park themselves on the White House lawn for a fortnight, the private security firms and mining corporations who'd own Afghay-nis-tan wouldn't react. Why should they?

If there were any truth in your otherwise colorful rant, then we'd have carpet bombed the whole place to slag like we did Japan in WW2. Do you know how much money the Military Industrial Complex would make on a project like that? It isn't that we CAN'T do the stone age thing, its that no one has the stomach for it anymore. And that's because of television and all its numerous descendants.

There was precious little reason to carpet-bomb Af-ghay-nis-tan before; they're out there fucking goats and oppressing women in mud-huts, who cares? Now that Apple stands to make a profit, well.

Carpet-bombing Eye-Raq would've been troublesome because the oil-rich Mohammedan shit-nations would've raised a stink. However, the "industrial military complex" has been having fun like they did back in the '40s in Iraq under the guise of private security and so forth, and...I can't say that anyone seems to care that much. Anyone who matters vis a vis the continuation of the process, natch. The revolution was televized, but the next generation graduated right into an introverted apathy.

Dude, they flew passenger jets into NYC sky scrapers. What other reason do we need????

Hello, this is my point. It's not just us at home, of course. It's the global community as well. You can't keep any kind of horrific mass murder a secret anymore....
    However, the "industrial military complex"
Military Industrial Complex - get it right, and cap it with respect, bitch.

Ok, yes, they are making loads of money from contracting to weapons and ammunition and so on. But consider that the bombs needed to do an old fashioned fire-storm-making civil bombing campaign are off the shelf technology. No development costs means time and materials only - its practically free! Big Money! Big Prizes! I LOVE IT!

Despite what you may read this morning, the U.S. military did not just “discover” a trillion dollars’ worth of precious minerals in Afghanistan.

The New York Times today proclaimed that Afghanistan is apparently poised to become “the Saudi Arabia of lithium” — a metal used to produce gadgets like iPods and laptops. The discovery will also, according to Pentagon documents quoted by the Times, fundamentally transform the country’s opium-reliant economy.

But the military (and observers of the military) have known about Afghanistan’s mineral riches for years. The U.S. Geological Survey and the Navy concluded in a 2007 report that “Afghanistan has significant amounts of undiscovered nonfuel mineral resources,” including ”large quantities of accessible iron and copper [and] abundant deposits of colored stones and gemstones, including emerald, ruby [and] sapphire.”

Not to mention that the $1 trillion figure is — at best — a guesstimate. None of the earlier U.S military reports on Afghan’s mineral riches cite that amount. And it might be prudent to be wary of any data coming out of Afghanistan’s own Mines Ministry, which “has long been considered one of the country’s most corrupt government departments,” The Wall Street Journal reports.

And the timing of the “discovery” seems just a little too convenient. As Blake Hounshell at Foreign Policy notes, the Obama administration is struggling to combat the perception that the Afghan campaign has “made little discernible progress,” despite thousands of additional troops and billions of extra dollars.

Still, Pentagon officials are touting the find as a potential economic game-changer — and one that could end decades of conflict. But whether it’s oil or coltan, rich pockets of resources are always a mixed blessing. Just ask children in Congo, home to 80 percent of the world’s coltan supply, who were forced to mine for the precious metal that was later used to manufacture tech gadgets.

It’ll take years, and a ton of capital investment, before Afghanistan’s deposits can even be mined. And when they can, it’s anybody’s guess who’ll actually be profiting. Hounshell sums up the mess nicely:

Meanwhile, the drive for Kandahar looks to be stalled in the face of questionable local support for Karzai’s government, the Taliban is killing local authorities left and right, and the corruption situation has apparently gotten so bad that the U.S. intelligence community is now keeping tabs on which Afghan officials are stealing what.

Soooo..... Mcchrystal got himself fired. How about that? Think it will affect the war? Sounds like his strat hasn't been panning out too well. Too bad we had no other option in this than to invade. What do we do now? Surrender to the Taliban and hope they let us stay Christian?

We probably already have. You know, when we invaded we had no other choice. So a request of Russian re-invasion would have already been made and refused.

Ahhh...but now we can leverage our request by hinting we might let BP survive. Do you realize how worried they are that BP won't be around to pump their oil for them anymore?

Huh? No no no. They are offering services for fees. This is capitalism. No one's going to be exploited or ripped off. BP, like any other oil company, is just there to help these people take advantage of the natural wealth their nation happens to be built overtop. And in return they will earn a decent living and a decent return for their shareholders. Stop being so cynical.
