    wot's ur fav?

    I like variety, but this is what I'm most likely to have at home or order when out:

    Personally, I don't like beers or lagers. Never have, and doubt I ever will, even with the new micro-brews that are so popular.

    Rum is probably my favorite spirit. I like both dark and light varieties....but only when mixed as a cocktail. Mojitos are simply the best, pure cane sugar rum mixed with fresh mint and ice. But I also love a sour mash whiskey like Jack Daniels mixed with Coca-Cola, or sipping 'higher' labels straight.

    Wine remains a confusing category. I'm not a wine aficionado, and only know what I like after tasting. I still don't know the difference between Pinot grapes, since they make both red and white wines. I found a Pinot Gris I really like, but it's not a Pinot Grigio.

    Martinis are fun, too. I like vodka better than gin because it's sweeter. But the older I get, the better a "dirty martini" tastes. And I don't really like olives.

    I was recently introduced to Negronis and, once I was convinced that I wasn't racist for ordering one, enjoyed it quite a bit.

    I've also become a huge fan of Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPAs. With 9% alcohol, they get you drunk!

    My father in law loves Dogfish Head and always buys a bunch of nice beers when he's in town. One night I figured I'd polish off a bottle of one he had left behind, not realizing it was about fifteen percent alcohol.

    I'm not really a drinker, but a few I've enjoyed:

    Beer:

    Hobgoblin (Wychwood Brewery)
    Nattie Bo is always fun
    Dogfish Head is all right

    Wine:

    Chardonnay (I prefer oaky), Cabs, Pinots of various sorts, plenty of red wine blends. Had a fantastic Tempranillo the other day.

    Spirits:

    Don't drink much hard core liquor, but I do enjoy the occasional single malt scotch. Favorite for the price is Balvenie DoubleWood, 12 years.

    Cocktails:

    Meh. Rum with spiced apple cider count? Otherwise I don't really do cocktails.

    Don't do liquers either.

    I am deeply sorry. Especially at the Jever mistake. But that mistake was provoked by the wrong pronunciation in their own commercial.

    Ah, the Dogfish 120 minute IPA. It'll make you do something stupid...or just pass out.

    Those are interesting beer names you got there!

    I had HeBrew once and thought I liked it...then had it again and I realized I was already trashed when I first tasted it. Basically I had beer goggles for beer.

    Oh, it's not awful, but not something I'd want people to think of as 'Jewish beer'. As it is, we're stuck with Manischewitz as 'Jewish wine', even though there are absolutely fantastic wines out there from both Israel and elsewhere, of both the kosher and non-kosher varieties.

    Depends on the occasion really, for pilsener I like Hertog Jan and Jupiler, Grolsch isn't bad either. But often drink Bavaria due to my location, which is kinda shitty but cheap and local.
    Stronger beers, I like Duvel, Pretty much all triples and most of the trappist beers (anyone else here managed to drink Westvleteren? It is pretty hard to get, and probably the most expensive beer I ever had, but I didn't even like it that much)/ My favourite trappist would be Orval. Not a big fan of doubles, or most types of dark beer (though Guiness can be nice!).
    On a sunny day Erdinger or another weizenbeer is nice. Or a cherry beer, I keep forgetting which is the brand I like (one brand sucks really bad, the others are okay, and there's one I really like).
    The Palm Dobbel which is only available around christmas is pretty nice, too.
    As far as names go, Delirium Tremens has a funny name (and logo with a pink elephant), and Newton apple beer is also a fun name!

    I really do like special beers, though they tend to be a bit strong, my last special beer night ended with me throwing up for the first time in almost two years Involved Duvel, Orval, Guillotine, Chimay, and possibly some others I forgot about.

    Wine

    I like wine, but I have no real knowledge about it. I do know I like the pinot gris from the Alsace my parents often have...

    Spirits

    A nice single malt is always good Don't really know which brands, I usually go to the whiskey store, tell him what tastes I like and how much I am willing to spend, and he recommends a brand I have never heard of (and usually lets me taste first ). I do recall that I really liked Macallan, I think I had 18 years old fine oak, and a cask strength one. Also like Islay whiskeys.
    A nice glass of cognac is also nice, other than that I don't drink much pure spirits, except the occasional liqueur, or shots in a bar which tend to be not that great tasting. Dutch Dynamite isn't bad, though.
    Pastis is nice on a summer day!

    Mix Drinks

    Don't drink them often, but whiskey sour is nice, a martini is nice, a margarita is nice, a long island ice tea is nice, a lynchburg lemonade is nice. Serving B52's was fun because of the layers, and setting it on fire Tastes nice, too. Oh, and I like white (and black) russians. And gin tonic of course!

    edit: googeling makes me suspect my preferred cherry beer is Mort Subite - oude kriek. It's made using the traditional process which makes it less sweet, a lot more refreshing, and avoids chemical taste like at least one other brand has.

    Forgot to mention liqueurs. Generally speaking, if a drink has its own vessel, it's probably pretty good. Those tiny liqueur glasses a good example. One of the best I've had is a home-made concoction of cherries marinated in its own juices with some water and sugar, stored quietly for a few dark months in the pantry.

    There's probably a secret ingredient I don't know, or a special fermenting process. It was served in pretty, tiny liqueur glasses, served on a silver platter, with much ceremony. I didn't really understand it at the time, and thought it was just a cultural thing. I took it like a shot glass, instead of sipping it, to the humor of my hosts. Had a great taste (not like cough syrup) and was probably 100% proof.

    Ah, right, must have been mistranslated to white beer here then (granted, most weizen beers are white).Also, doubles are a bit less common than triples, but most bars should gave at least one variety here.

    The word Weissbier must be a linguistic relict. I don't know of any other case where the two words can be used for the same meaning.

    I think some of you may enjoy Jeremiah Weed's Sour Mash Brew tried it yesterday, served up in one of their signature jam-jar glasses with lots of ice. They say that it's not beer and that it's not cider, that it is simply what it is. I think it's a lot closer to cider than to anything else, but it strikes a perfect balance between sweet and dry, and the taste of bourbon with hints of vanilla and spices... is very nice. If you kinda like Lynchburg Lemonade but would prefer it to be more elegant and clean then you should give this one a go.

    The sake (or whatever you want to call it ) you can buy in Sweden for home use... is kinda crappy. The ginger has on two occasions brought back sake from Japan and both times I've been amazed by just how tasty it is, regardless of serving temperature. This time she visited a brewery and bought a bottle of plum sake that I thought would be horrible, something like plum brandy or plum slivovitz. Instead it proved to be one of the most delicious alcoholic drinks I've ever tasted. It didn't taste boozy in any way, and there was none of that all-your-mouth-are-belong-to-us astringency. It was smooth but full-bodied, sweet but also almost a little savory, and had just the right amount of plum flavour. The flavours lingered after each sip without getting annoying. I think I have a booze crush

    Plum sake similarly surprised me. We get what I think is pretty good sake here. If you ever find yourself in Amerika, a few of my friends rave about this place:

    No beer.

    If I can get a G&T with Bombay Sapphire and Schweppes tonic with a slice of lime I'll drink that.

    Otherwise votka with sour cherry juice (Jenever is an acceptable alternative).

    Wine, red riojas, preferably gran reservas.

    I usually steer clear dessert wines and the like, but Museum Reserve Muscat from Yalumba is too delicious to resist. If you get the chance, get a few bottles, pair it with the most decadently chocolatey dessert you can think of

    Plus you can use muscat to make a chicken - gamba - almond sauce which is really delicious

    I've had to give up lager because it plays havoc with my guts, but I'll still have the odd Guinness (Which I bloody love)

    Failing that, I drink G&T and Rum and coke, and that's it, though I really don't drink very often these days.

    Hendricks Gin with a slice of cucumber and tonic is the most amazing drink ever. I used to love Sailor Jerry rum, but they changed the formula a while back, so now I drink Morgan's Spiced, which is nicer.

    Seriously though, if you like gin, you HAVE to get your hands on a bottle of Hendricks.

    Would it be "out of order" if I asked at what age y'all began tasting these beers, lagers, wines and spirits?

    I know some of you are from SSSocialist Europe with lower drinking ages....and experienced booze earlier than many Americans. Do you think that made a difference in your "palate" or personal preferences?

    Not sure what you mean by 'disgusting booze'. Does that mean alcohol is best suited for "mature" palates, and no one should bother if they're under 21 years old?

    Uh no it means that a lot of people who start drinking in their teens often drink mostly to get drunk and often have less money than adults and often have more restricted access so they're accustomed to drinking things that taste horrible (until they can upgrade of course). No doubt this generalization is untrue for very many people, just the impression I've gotten from my friends and acquaintances
