Default Chile gets wasted by earthquake, Honolulu next on the menu

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35617640/

EWA BEACH, Hawaii - A tsunami triggered by the Chilean earthquake raced across the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, threatening Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast as well as hundreds of islands from the bottom of the planet to the top.
This isn't going to end well.
Honolulu International is so low lying that the waves will likely swamp the entire place.
    I enjoy blank walls.

    Earth burped.

The geologists and media should consider their "hype" or people will disregard future warnings about Tidal Waaaaves!

But it was interesting that the quake affected about 1/4 of the planet

Probably because geologists say "x has a y probability of happening", which the media changes to "OMG, x is going to happen, run for your lives".
Hope is the denial of reality

It's a catch-22 for people in charge of warnings and evacuations, too.

The irony was high last night judging by the teevee movie schedules: Armageddon (meteor), Dante's Peak (volcano).....

To be fair, they have to have warning systems in place. Hawaii got hit pretty bad in the 60s by a tidal wave caused by an earthquake, and it took out a whole town, killing many people. Other islands along the Pacific have been devastated before.

But, ya, it was interesting to see all of the new channels with their cameras aimed at the coastline in Kona. My sister lives on the big island but is over 1000ft above sea level, so no worries where she was.

....the US-centric news is now assessing our building codes, infrastructure, and preparedness. For when our Big One arrives.

Kind of like Amsterdam looking at New Orleans and feeling better. Go about your business, nothing here to look at, everything is well under control. Trust the experts, they know what they're doing.

I read about severe storms in Europe (especially France), some 900,000 without electricity and roads washing away. Wonder when transportation workers will go on strike about that.

I've already heard people saying it's the calm before the storm of 2012 ..... fucking idiots.

Quake fucked up the earth, made the day shorter by shifting our axis.

    Spoiler:

The length of the day should have gotten shorter by 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second),” Gross, said today in an e-mailed reply to questions. “The axis about which the Earth’s mass is balanced should have moved by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters or 3 inches).”

You should offer them a generous bargain. They'll sign a document giving you all of their assets in 2013. In exchange, you'll give them half the value of those assets now. Since they don't expect to be alive after 2012, they should be more than willing to accept that arrangement.

Offer them full current value if you are so sure they're wrong.

If hindsight is 20-20, why is it so often ignored?
