Thread: What is making you happy right now

Minx, I saw that "Prancercize" video on CNN. Reminded me of the "Dancercize" era started by Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons in the 80's, with rhythmic aerobics set to music. Followed by the dance dance revolution of the 90's. Culminating in Dancing With The Stars in the 21st century.

Music and movement are happy things. Move without trying to dance. Dance like no one's watching.

Both my boys are at home. They got delivery pizza (heavy on the garlic) and Mountain Dew, watching some movie marathon together. It makes me happy to see their brotherly connection, revived. They've missed each other since the eldest moved to Philly. Such a nice 'reunion'.

My sons got into their toy-storage bins....and were 'old enough' to find joy in re-visiting their childhood play. They dug through their collections of Legos (a distinct sound that's been quiet for several years), GI Joes, Brio, Playmobil, and action figures, creating "set-ups", and laughing like little kids. Their voices and laughters were deeper, since they're older now, but still had the same character and resonance of their childhood.

Hard to explain, but it made me Happy just listening to their HappiNess.

PayPal managed to land itself in hot water in Germany. They had announced a little competition where once per week 10 people would get 500€ if they had used PayPal to pay for anything in the previous week. So far, so good.

However, someone seems to have fubar'd the mail server - because they sent a "You have won 500€!" email to seemingly their whole German mailing list.

And that's where it gets tricky: We have this legal paragraph § 661a BGB. Which states quite plainly that "a company which sends prize notifications to its customers actually has to pay those prize notifications".

They could lose quite a lot of money over this.

I was hoping that was 500,000, just so it could bankrupt the scam artists.

Don't those laws generally have provisions for things like typing errors?

They don't have such provisions for a very good reason: Scammers might use those loopholes as well. "Oh, we're so sorry! The 'You've won 1,000,000€!' message was sent erroneously!"

Granted, an actual case in court might not fare very well - however, if the plaintiff said, for example, that, due to him expecting this windfall, he already spent 500€ and now is out of said 500€ for the sole reason that the prize notification was not actually real, the court might side with him.

I suppose details will be sparse by necessity?

  26. #4316
Quite, for a number of reasons. Let's just say that there is a kind of nanoscale materials that was an area of really hot materials science research at the turn of the century, but is only now being contemplated for use in biomaterials applications. I sat down with my mentor and hashed out a way to tweak the non-biological materials to make them biologically relevant and tunable for a whole class of applications that have very challenging design requirements.

And yes, that was incredibly vague. Sorry!

The ban prohibiting trousers that hang more than 3in (7.6cm) below the hips on the boardwalk passed on Wednesday.

And throw offenders of the ban in jail for a year.
