When I was young and courted girls who still lived with their parents, their fathers were supportive and non-intrusive, which at the time I found an exceptional courtesy and luck, and still do. Obviously I don't have kids myself, but I'd say that it's a better learning experience for the child to experience their first relationships mostly by themselves. Of course if your potential daughter decides to date a bank-robbing motorcyclist, you kinda have to step in, but that's an aberration rather than the norm.
