Thread: World Cup 2014

    Default World Cup 2014

Kicks off today, thursday 12th June, in Brazil.

    Opening match Brazil v Croatia.

    Groups:

England normally gets into weeks and weeks of hype and build-up, with the papers and the media filled with it. But it's been very subdued so far this year. Maybe the expectation of the England team is pretty low - they'll be lucky to get beyond the group stage I reckon.

Favrourites are Brazil, then Argentina, then Spain with an outside chance.

Funny that you don't mention Germany.
    Congratulations America

First wanted to post this in the pictures thread, but it fits even better here:

I wouldn't totally write off England at all, with the mix of youth/experienced players in our squad no one really knows what they'll be like in a competitive tournament. I cannot see England winning, I believe a good tournament for England is getting to the quarter finals and anything else is a bonus.

Interesting fact: The last time a team came back to win the FA Cup from 2-0 down was in 1966. Could it be that the England jigsaw clicks into place this year? Arsenal did win 3-2 in the FA Cup final ....

I think on paper four teams have the quality to make it to the final: Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Spain. The key thing for me in respects to Brazil is Neymar firing on all cylinders and getting the goals. The Brazilian people have high expectations of him and at 22 years old you're asking a lot of him in my opinion.

No matter how this opening match ends, it's a surprising yet boring start of the tournament.
    Congratulations America

Not a great match. Croatia are a very tough team to break down.

Brazil thoroughly undeserving of the lead until their 3rd goal. Penalty should never have been given.

I thought the first match was summed up by the god awful opening ceremony. Croatia were robbed in my opinion. Neymar should have been sent off, the penalty shouldn't have been awarded and the disallowed goal should have stood.

Let's hope the referees finally get better in the next match.

That was awesome, the first great match. The right thing after all those bad referees.

Jesus Christ !!!... what I loved most about this match was that it was so obvious they weren't going to stop playing after getting ahead. The Dutch side didn't just want to win, they wanted to destroy any notion that they're the underdog.

I absolutely enjoyed that, the Dutch were superb! Van Persie scored a brilliant flying header, ahh, top draw this game! I hope you Dutch are proud of your team!!

Anyone already noticed that Google changes its logo for every match?

I can't sleep now, I have to root for the Aussies!

Yes, great comeback! And that second goal actually wasn't off-side.

Portugal is getting hammered into the ground

And the Portugese still have 45 more minutes to go - with one man less on the field...

Getting optimistic that the US can get a point from the Portugal match.

    One fewer man.

You do know that they'll be 11 again in the match?

And first of all: You have to not lose against Ghana ... for the third time

Iran - Nigeria was strangely funny to watch; people reacting in shock to passes on them. I was LOL-ing a couple of times.

On TV they have chats in a living room setting in the half-time and after the matches; to add to the living room feeling one of the presenters takes his dog and I've virtually fallen in love with the little monster
    Congratulations America

    A) Portugal kind of sucked. That suckiness might carry over.
    B) Pepe got a red, which means he's sitting out the US game.

Yeah, if the US doesn't at least tie tonight, they're done. Anything short of a win would be pretty demoralizing for the team though.

Well, the goal after 30 seconds does bode well for the US.

    Okay, that was reasonably exciting.

Most of the stats - except the one that counts I guess - were not in America's favor. I think they can still get out of the group stage with a tie against Portugal, but can't see them going much further than that.

When will you Americans get that the only stats that count are the stats on the score board at the end of the match?
    Congratulations America

Was on a film set with Belgian crew today, and after a disappointing first half they were very happy
