In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

I understand Wiki-fucking-pedia's dilemma with the US legislature but for fuck sake don't force the people that actually DO SUPPORT you to click on links that take you to 2Facedbook or Twatter or whatever the fuck else people substitute for socialising in this so-called Information Age while still preventing the SUPPORTER from being able to access Wiki-fucking-pedia as this will not help garner the sympathy and support you desire but will likely have the opposite effect because it is just fucking irritating.

I don't see those buttons on my page

Termite, it's supposed to be irritating. Wouldn't make much sense otherwise, no?

Just press escape before it's finished loading.
And let's face it, if it wasn't annoying, it wouldn't reach so many people.
On a side note, some dumb fuck who lives near here thought all these sites were down today because the US government was using SOPA to take them down, or something stupid like that. And wondered, and I quote, "how can it be that SOPA got rights without every citizen in the world voting on it".
*sigh*

Amazon seems to be taking advantage of this quite nicely. Their prices are jumping all over the place today, I picked up the Harry Potter and Star Wars bluray box sets at the same price they were around black friday, only to have them jump up in price 10 and 12 bucks after I checked out.
I'm curious if there will be an increase in digital sales thanks to people not being able to goof off at some of their more popular sites.

Nothing more than venting, I suppose. But a friend of mine is pressuring me to "adopt" a pedigreed Springer Spaniel 6 month-old puppy. She knows I love animals, have considered a dog for a while, and my sons have been bugging me for a dog since....well, for their whole short lives.
She has one of his litter brothers, who's totally adorable and gorgeous and "easily trained". Some other friends of mine have had Springer Spaniels and admitted they're a bit of work. High energy dogs, paw feathers that need daily cleaning. I've spent a week with a friend and her Springer Spaniel, and it was like having a kid with ADHD that they'll never outgrow. By the time they're truly calm, they're old and near death, and break your heart.
Anyway, this "arrangement" would be more like fostering or care-taking. We'd be his family home, in between his show times and breeding "dates". The whole thing sounds counter-intuitive for having a family member dog.
I'm having trouble finding a way to say NO. And having more trouble explaining that to my kids.
The money for my new car is taking its sweet time to arrive. I hope it's in my account tomorrow otherwise I'll have to tell the dealer again that there was some snafu at the bank.
Other than that, it was actually a pretty good deal - 12,800€ for a brand new VW Polo which would have cost about 16,000€ or more if I had bought it directly from VW. For some weird reason, cars become cheaper if they're produced in Germany, sold to Czechia and resold to German car dealers. And no, there are no hidden traps. The manual and everything is in German, it falls under German warranty laws and we also have an comparatively cheap and reliable VW workshop nearby which will cover inspections and the rest.
What I'm waiting for now is ~10,000€ from a building loan contract (which I can use for whatever reason I deem fit - everything under 20,000€ is not tied to actually having to invest it into a house or house-related stuff), from which I will take 5,000€ for the car, the rest will be paid over the course of 4 years. More than 5,000€ in advance was actually not possible!

Horror story from work;
I have just recieved an objection of an employer against the rewarding of a former employee of his with a time-limited, partial disability benefit.
What I know of the case so far is a very bad example of exploitation of an employee by an employer. The employee in this case is a Polish woman who migrated to Holland in order to earn an income. She worked through a small temp agency and her job consisted of sorting and packing vegetables in a greenhouse. So far nothing excessively bad about that, even though it's hard work with low pay (€1400 before taxes a month). That also is not extreme.
However, this woman had the luck of getting breast cancer and an asshole for an employer. After a mastectomy, he forced her to start working again within 6 weeks. Probably he did this by -illegally- threathening her with eviction from the home he had made available to her.
It would have been bad enough if she would have been working at her old job, but the employer decided that it would be best if this woman would simply go away so he gave her work cleaning up in buildings that were being re-configured. Very dirty and very heavy work. After nine months she got her old job back, and she saw no solution other than sorting and packing vegetables again. Untill she really could not any longer and decided to give up and go back to Poland.
Congratulations America
Started up this season's library story-time with the kid last week. So, as expected, we are both sick this week. Damn germ factory toddlers. And damn me for letting my immune system go to hell...

Ordered the Harry Potter BluRay set through Amazon.
What I got was the UK version of the Harry Potter BluRay set. It has 3 extra discs (extras for the last 3 movies), but the box art looks retarded, and it comes in multiple cases (unlike the US version). And I could have ordered the UK version from Amazon's uk site for $20 less.
Looks like the family has to wait a tad bit longer before we start our Potter marathon.

The BluRay version I have is the box set that comes all in one case. But, the last two movies don't come with deleted scenes it seems, just some extra behind the scenes footage but nothing that really interested me. My only complaint though.
This is true! Never understood the need for changing the name of the book-and movie-for American audiences. Well, I guess for dumfucks who'd think it was another Indiana Jones-type story? Still, was unnecessary.
Harry potter & the philosopher's stone, to Harry potter & the sorcerer's stone.
The original book, published in the UK, was entitled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, in reference to the mythical substance that alchemists believed would transmute base metals into gold. When the American publisher, Scholastic, brought the book out in the U.S., it changed the book's name to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the belief that American children would be confused by the apparent reference to philosophy.Other changes reflect British terms which are largely unknown in the U.S. or which have more common 'equivalents.' For example on page 140 of the British edition of "Sorcerer's Stone" Harry and Ron are eating crumpets, whereas on page 199 of the U.S. edition they are eating English muffins. Similarly, eating a "packet of crisps" and carrying a "torch" from the British edition are converted to eating a "bag of [potato] chips" and carrying a "flashlight."

On top of the title change, they continue to edit the books between publishings. To fix continuity issues, better relate them to movies, or simply fix something the author didn't like the original wording of.
anywho...I emailed amazon about what happened. how it seems someone was flipping their UK version from the UK store on the US store for a profit, while making amazon look stupid because they remained the fulfillment point. Told them it wasn't a big enough issue for me to request a refund/return but I felt a little ripped off since I could have bought the version I was mailed via the amazon.co.uk and saved myself about $20.
They got back to me with a prepaid shipping label and a $10 credit, and told me to purchase the US version from a different seller, and they would cover the shipping charge.
Damn amazon, always a in my book.

A fantasy book being sold in a fantasy aisle emphasizing the fantasy aspect of the series. How unconscionable.
Hope is the denial of reality
The first couple of Potter books have an elementary reading level, even shelved in the J section of most libraries. The first book has an Accelerated Reader level of 5.5. So those books were geared towards readers younger than teens.
Its all about the target audience not understanding what "philosopher" meant.

It was geared at children younger than 10?

No one said that . 5th graders are usually 10-11 years old. Or are you trying to incorrectly claim that the 10-12 range (tweens and preteens) are teenagers?
Part of my job is designing programs that are focused towards these two groups, and my system has teen areas that are restricted to the 13-18 age range.
Hell, even the ESRB has different ratings for the two groups, E10+ and T.

I already posted the reason stated by the author a few posts ago
And either way, it seemed to work for UK kids. Make of that what you want (Or does a philosopher mean something completely different in American English than in British English?) The odd thing to me is that, AFAIK, sorcerers are not mentioned in the books while wizards are. For what it's worth, the Dutch title roughly translates to 'Harry potter and the stone of the wise'.The original book, published in the UK, was entitled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, in reference to the mythical substance that alchemists believed would transmute base metals into gold.
