Thread: What's messing with your Groove?

I hear ya. It seems especially nasty and below the belt this election. Maybe it's the frequency, I dunno.

I heard that on average there are 12,000 political ads every week, but can't remember if that was new ads, prime time, networks or what.

WTF? Someone read the dials wrong?

Reminds me of the time when I has just taken over a theater in Long Island and after a long process of figuring out where all the bodies were buried, I discovered I was getting 2 natural gas bills. Being a former utility employee, I went looking for the meters to check the meter ID #'s.

On one bill I found the 2 meters right away (right out in front of the building).

The other bill also had 2 meters I couldn't find those. I then notice that this bill was estimated...and that usually means that they can not read it. So I then went into my files, and looked at all the old bill for those meters.

    They were all estimated bills.

So now I'm thinking that the meter is INSIDE the building. I run all over the place and can't find them.

I then remember there was a remodel for the building to make it a theater, which means...the meters had to have been moved.

So after getting the gas utility out there, they verify that the estimated bill was the original meters that were pulled for the remodel, and the other bill was for the new meters that were installed.

So for 2 YEARS before I got there, the theater was being billed for estimated gas usage that NEVER occurred.

A few weeks later I get a check back for my company for over $19,000.

Gods that place was a mess.

Nobody read the meters this month as far as I know. Typically that means they automatically take 10 euro's (20 tl) out of my account. This time they tried to take 20.658 TL out of my account. Usually when they read the meter the bill is peanuts.

Automated telemarketing calls! On my cell phone! Which IS on the DNC list!

Please hold for the next available representative. Your call is very important to us!

First of all, if MY call is that important, have a fucking person there when I answer the phone, not a goddamned computer!

Second of all, I didn't call you, so how is MY call that fucking important?

    New rant! lol

The Friend's ex-wife snores! Louder than I do even! haha She kinda ended up homeless this last week, so I am letting her stay with me for a bit. That wouldn't be quite so bad, but I only have 1 bedroom, and 1 bed. We are sharing (not sexually) both. If I get to sleep before she does, all is good. If I don't, I find myself sitting here at the computer at 6:33 AM, wishing like hell I had gone to bed before she got home from her date!

Ok, today some new moves on the water bill crisis. They advised me to immediately cancel my automatic payments to them and to be on the safe side to withdraw any money I have in my account. That means they have recognized at least (it seems) that the waterbill is crazy. Which it is of course because I got charged an amount that covers about 45 years of regular water bills.

Whose bright idea was it to skip a week for NCIS, NCIS:LA, House, and The Event, just because we have elections? Just for that, I am boycotting all those shows! (for a week)

Had a meeting with the board of advisors (which I'm part of) of a cultural foundation I used to be the treasurer of a few years ago, and basically decided to liquidate the foundation. The new people in charge are just so fucking incompetent, it's saddening. Better to kill it now than to let them ruin it, and the name and reputation, even more. Just have to figure out a way to salvage some of the activities and transfer them to other organizations, if possible. And we may have to do the liquidation ourselves, because I honestly do not trust the current board competent enough to manage the process with the tax services, chamber of commerce and all that crap.

I'm at the office, nothing to do untill 14.00, with a system that is about as slow as it gets today. And then I have a hearing at 14.00 after which I have to be out around 15.00 to get to the airport in time for my flight at 17.00.

Mother-in-law diagnosed with breast cancer. Since I really like her, this is a drag.

Fortunately, breast cancer survival is way better than it used to be.

Not sure yet, since she doesn't speak science (a concert pianist). I hope so. When they remove it they'll check the nodes, which is the key. Prognosis probably good, but you never know.

  21. #1731
My mother went through that back in 2004. Ended up with a partial mastectomy and cancer-free since.

Hope all is well with your MIL after her surgery.

That sucks, Tear. I hope it works out well for her, and they find the sentinel node clean. How's your wife holding up?

I got a call from a friend, she was almost hysterical. For good reason. Her dad (in his 80's) has been sick for about a year, having mini strokes, trouble swallowing. In and out of the hospital, diagnosed with "some type of dementia", Alzheimer's, Lewy bodies, organic brain syndrome, or just too many strokes. He's been combative and sedated, sent to a nursing home for extended care. DNR, losing weight, wearing diapers, the whole bit. Doctors wrote discharge orders for hospice care only. Then his wife (her mom, also in her 80's) pulled a huge surprise and signed him out.....and took him home. To their apartment. Social Services says they're required to file court papers and have a judge hearing for her competency. They want to declare her incompetent, and have him sent back to the nursing home by court order. But they're not helping figure out how to get him/them services in the interim. And he's a veteran, qualified for other services, but there's some glitch in paperwork, or something.

In the meantime, a hospital bed was delivered to the apartment, Medicare is going to send a nurse's aide 3 times a week to give baths, and a hospice nurse will visit 3 hours a day. After the first home visit, the nurse saw the wife give him "some pills not prescribed", and he's been gorked out since then. He's also being given Haldol crushed in apple sauce.

It's a horrible mess. So she asked if she could hire me, to help take care of her dying dad. Well, of course I can't take money to help a friend. And it'd be too awkward if it didn't work out. Her mother is very picky and a bit controlling (obviously) and claims they're "doing just fine", she just wants some time away now and then. Like respite care. But she's also on the downward spiral, can't see or walk very well and still tries to drive. They can't get the car keys away.

4am edit. This is really bothering me. I'm supposed to meet with my friend and her elderly parents in about 12 hours. There's no way I can help all of them, because they have different needs and interests. My instinct is to help my friend, whatever she needs. But I know she won't like what I anticipate (based loosely on long experience)---that her parents have made a pact to help each other die, at home, with what little dignity they have left. Crushing Haldol in applesauce, maybe stock piling meds, defying doctor's orders, refusing institutional care. These things are usually done in order to die at home, in familiar surroundings.....alliances and mental capacities, professional services, all pitted against one another. Keep him alive/let him die. Help me/help them. Do something/don't do anything!

Her mother may very well be coherent and trying to carry out her husband's last wishes. Perhaps my friend has been in denial or overwhelmed by the whole damn thing. I don't really want to be dragged into the legalities, either. Show me the legal Living Will, will I have Good Samaritan laymen status, will I be sued if I call 911 or if I don't call 911, am I acting as a friend or will someone/somewhere sue me as a professional nurse?

I've run so many scenarios through my mind. Now I wonder if I can be any help at all.

So who would you "interview" first? The daughter or the wife? After that, whose desires or needs would you focus on, if they conflict?

  25. #1735
In case it wasn't noticed because it's buried in a thread that usually has a lot of extraneous whining, I could really use some input here......REALLY.

The daughter is your friend, right? I would go for her first. I can't give you any advice on legal issues, really. We have a very different approach on this kind of issues here.

Yes, the daughter is my friend. We're not super close friends, though. No long history or anything. Our kids have been classmates since kindergarten, we were sports moms for a while, and we attend the same church. We've "lunched" together several times over the years, and we're on each other's adult emergency list. If you know what I mean?

  28. #1738
Adult emergency list, that may need some explanation. It's complicated. Both of us are transplants here, and have no other family in town. She came from Virginia, I came from Indiana, we both landed in Pennsylvania. "Most" people in our area have extended family nearby. One of our connections is that we DON'T have family in town or close by, so we bonded that way. We have a sort of understanding that we are surrogate family, but mostly for emergencies. Picking up each other's kids from school in a pinch, taking kids on weekends in a pinch. But we don't vacation or holiday together as families. It's more of a "back-up" agreement.

Our relationship makes the whole thing even more complex, I realize that. But our friendship is more important than casual or social ones. As this scenario illustrates. Of all the people she could call, she called me. I'm her adult emergency person, and she's mine.

Oh and I thought it was something like porn-buddies... well it somehow is. But as you describe it, I would even more suppose that you should consider her view first, as you would probably expect the same from her. But advice and help doesn't mean that one has to agree with everything. I expect my friend to tell me if I go wrong.

I don't really want ADVICE. More like input, or encouragement, or compassion. Put yourself in her spot, and then mine, and just try to......

    Wait....how is this like porn-buddies?
