    I'm curious what the word on encyclopedias is. At the most basic level, it doesn't make sense to ever cite them because one doesn't need to cite widely available information. There are bigger problems with citing them, but that seems like the main common-sense reason to avoid doing so.

    I can ask the sprouts what they've been told in the morning, but it seems to me that the most likely "encyclopedia" most students these days would consider is Wikipedia - and the host of other problems with using that as a source trumps widely available information.


    edit: Also, an issue comes up with widely available information that the person in question didn't already know.
