Default The Bug Out Bag Discussion

In my slow Walking Dead-inspired descent into madness, as well as my memories of previous disasters that threatened the food/fuel supplies in my region, I've been occasionally thinking of how I would handle a zombie apocalypse or other breakdown of the social order. I've already mapped-out a few destinations in far-off isolated areas that would sustain me and my family. The trick is getting out of urban/sub-urban areas and surviving long enough to make a journey that can take hours by car (much longer on foot or by bike).

Is anyone here a closet prepper? I think this forum needs a dose of the apocalypse.

Myself and a woman at work often discuss what we'd do in a hypothetical situation such as a zombie apocalypse. She's of the opinion she'd go up north to Scotland and see what happens. Myself? Well I already know where I'd get my weapons (You never know!), where I'd get the ammo from and my ideal mode of transport if I have to venture as a lone wolf or with family in tow.

I always check out how my apartment could be made zombie proof. I think that basically demolition of the staircase between the levels would get me a safe hideaway in case my door wouldn't hold. . Then I'd have to get out of my bedroom window an over the roof to a shop too doors down. I'd have to collect rain water and use the roof to start a garden.

I have a large enough quantity of a fairly powerful poison to euthanize myself when shit hits the fan. Not really what you're asking, but there you go.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

That would merely turn you into a zombie.

What type of zombies we talking about here? Cause I can do the whole boat stuffed with supplies thing in under 24 hours, but thats not going to do much if we're talking World War Z (book) zombies that can pop up on any island.

Old school zombies already could do that, the bigger problem would be fast zombies.

I don't seriously anticipate that I will see a complete breakdown of social structures, but it's relatively easy and inexpensive for me to have some necessities on hand in the event of a prolonged disruption of accustomed amenities. I have several months worth of non-perishable staples, (wheat, flour, rice, sugar, salt, beans, pasta, etc...) stored in such a way that the majority of it should last ~25 years if unopened. This covers most of the immediate nutritional requirements for the scenarios I find most likely, e.g. severe weather, or loss of employment. Combined with our small garden we would be able to live somewhat comfortably for a period of time.

For more... exotic situations, I don't think it comes as a surprise to anyone here that I have a number of firearms and a substantial reserve of ammunition for them. This has less to do with my concerns about society and more to do with shooting being a favorite hobby of mine, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. As hiking and camping is a favorite recreational activity for my wife and I, we have a fairly good set of water filters, and live close to a source of easily potable water. I imagine it wouldn't take too much effort to grab a range bag, some staples, and our camping supplies if we really needed to bug out.

I think too many people have taken the zombie apocalypse to heart. They become end-time preachers and conspiracy theorists.

I think that preparing yourself for a breakdown of society is one thing (think survivalists, doomsday preppers etc), and natural disasters (depending on where you live that could be a good idea), but zombies? Really? I mean, it's fun to maybe think about it, but actually prepare for zombies?

We're talking about a TWD scenario, that means preparing for zombies

I haven't had enough time to think about this fighting off these stinking socialists, but at some point I am going to post a list!

I think expandable baton and knife is the extent of weaponry I would focus on, and orient around keeping myself mobile and fed/watered/dry for a week to make my way to the Backup Spot.
