Thread: Best day for Christmas / New Years to fall on?

Default Best day for Christmas / New Years to fall on?

Random discussion - what is the best day for you personally to have Christmas fall on? Is it the weekend? Is it on a Friday or Monday so you have a three day weekend? Or is it nice to have on a Thursday like this year which basically means Friday is a 'dead day' and you have almost a 4 day weekend.

Christmas/New Years falls on Thursday and I'm loving it.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the day after that are public holidays so I prefer to have Christmas Eve on Wednesday when I want a long break without having to take out too much of my comp-time. Similar reasoning applies to the numerous holidays during Easter I am however working a couple of days this Christmas, which is also nice. There's a lot of extra money/comp in working on public holidays so many people prefer to do that and take out their vacation days some other time.

Boxing Day (26th) is a holiday in the UK and since holidays transfer to the next day if on the weekend then so long as Christmas doesn't fall on a Tuesday or Wednesday then a 4 day weekend is guaranteed.

Though I've always worked in an industry where public holidays are entirely normal days so normally get no extra time off. No double time or time and a half either. This year I've taken leave and got a month off currently.

I take off a month in winter every year. For me it's best if Christmas is in the middle of the week as both Christmas and the day after are holidays, but unlike in most civilized countries you don't get days off during the week if they are on the weekend.
    Congratulations America

Yeah, you're "damned" for having self-fulfilling needs that aren't met by your employer. You're doubly "damned" by the envy (jealousy) you feel against SSSocialistic nations that put limits on Freee Market Capitalism. Coveting your neighbor is a sin, right?

Since I get paid by the hour I prefer it to be in the weekend, because now there's less work days so less money.

Not if you have a zero hour contact, no. I do get 8% bonus for vacation days.

What most people don't know is that that isn't a bonus but 8% of your salary being withheld by your employer untill its due date (end of contract or May).

No no I mean that next to that, I don't get vacation days, but instead get 8% more pay.

Oh. But that's just your legal minimum of paid vacation days monetized then.

That's illegal in the UK. Under our implementation of the Working Time Directive it is illegal to pay out holiday days without people taking them. It is considered to be paying people not to take leave and is totally illegal. Unless someone leaves employment in which case upon termination they can be paid any leave outstanding.
