Thread: What made you go WTF today?

  1. #1531
On May 5 at around 9:30 a.m., several teams of Pima County, Ariz., police officers from at least four different police agencies armed with SWAT gear and an armored personnel carrier raided at least four homes as part of what at the time was described as an investigation into alleged marijuana trafficking. One of those homes belonged to 26-year-old Jose Guerena and his wife, Vanessa Guerena. The couple's 4-year-old son was also in the house at the time. Their 6-year-old son was at school.
As the SWAT team forced its way into his home, Guerena, a former Marine who served two tours of duty in Iraq, armed himself with his AR-15 rifle and told his wife and son to hide in a closet. As the officers entered, Guerena confronted them from the far end of a long, dark hallway. The police opened fire, releasing more than 70 rounds in about 7 seconds, at least 60 of which struck Guerena. He was pronounced dead a little over an hour later.

Never mind the conspiracy stories, how are there people left in the US not scared absolutely shitless they'll be randomly murdered by the police around them?
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Well because most people are wise enough that when they hear a police siren outside, a knock at their door, and then "Police, open up!" to not then arm themselves with an AR-15, and go to confront said police in a dark hallway.

Yeah, but that's not what happened.

So the video is mislabeled then?

If you're satisfied, I'm sure the officers in question will appreciate the sentiment among their potential jurors. What I've seen of the case indicates the Marine had little chance of understanding what was going on until he was hit by 70 bullets. But that's just media frenzy.

I'm more mystified by the fact that you'd conflate what was in the video with evidence that Americans should be afraid of being randomly murdered by the police. Is police action in similar circumstances different in Finland? Do they send your house an event invitation beforehand?

    What: SWAT Team Raid Party
    Where: Your house
When: Sunday, May 29th, 2011 at 9 AM

We'll bring the guns and the guys, you sit quietly and answer a few questions. Coffee and cake will be served afterwards.

I'm also surprised there exists people who think its abnormal that two different groups of people who are pointing guns at one another in a hostile setting end up shooting/shooting at each other.

P.S.: Please don't hide or flush all the evidence before we get there. We really want to take a look at it!

My problem lies in the fact I am not a good writer. I either tend to over-emphasize things, (!!) have really bad grammar, or can't get the story across as it really happened. Sure, I could do fiction, but I would still have the problem of spelling and grammar. Oh well, maybe in another life! lol Realistically, it is very hard to get a book published. Unless you are already a public figure or an established author, rejection slips are the norm. Oh well, maybe I wasn't supposed to write a book.

I have had three fairly good starts on books, only to have them go down the drain. I guess I just don't have the discipline to write an actual book!

Not so much a "wtf" moment, but rather a "whoa" one; I found out today that the guy who's gonna be my college roommate is blind. Should be interesting, I'm actually kind of looking forward to it, I feel like he'll have a perspective on things I wouldn't think of.

That does sound like a great experience. I hope you're a tidy and organized person who won't leave shoes or backpacks on the floor. That could be dangerous.

Oh yeah, and you should probably take that as a great compliment from your school. They don't usually place blind students in with any old roommate, but someone with a certain character.

I'm worried that the text-to-speech program he uses on his computer might be used for erotic novels, if that's how he pops his jollies.

I suppose even if I weren't a tidy person I'd have to be now!

And thanks, but the whole roommate selection process was completely random from what I can tell. No Meyers-Briggs test, no simple survey, no nothing.

He'd probably use headphones for his erotic novels.

They don't do intake surveys for roommate compatibility anymore, and try to make good matches? Gosh, now I feel really old.

  18. #1548
A lot of places do, GGT. The other school I was considering going to does the whole Meyers-Briggs deal to sort out compatibility, and it works incredibly well from what I've heard. My school just doesn't, for whatever reason. Maybe because it's larger.

A personality test sounds a bit over-board. I was thinking things like----Bothered by slobs. Night owls are fine. Loud music and smokers make me sick. Won't use my room to study, just to sleep. Don't expect a one night stand/long standing lover/party group to greet me when I come home or when I wake up----at least that's how I remember our crappy preference poll.

Brandy was on the news today.

For buying a brand new $1500 wedding dress (for $200) from a charity event the local Goodwill was hosting using dresses donating from a bunch of fancy designers. Her's came from David's Bridal. She apparently was in line waiting at like 2am this morning, my sister drove her there (her usual dumpster diving hours).

Haha, my girlfriend and I apparently already have an engagement ring willed to us by her deceased grandmother...we aren't engaged either.

    Ultimatums are the best.

Also on an entirely different note, I had a WTF moment when a customer, holding a rectangular picture frame, asked me to clarify what I meant when I read her an in store sign that stated "Square Portrait Frames $9", as the reason that the frame she was holding was $12.99 and not $9. I'm uncertain of how I, or the sign, could have been clearer, and how someone older than 5 is confused about what constitutes a square.

OG, I think that's a pretty stong hinty hint hint, if you don't get the ball rolling soon you're gonna be in a heap of trouble....even one of my old coworkers who waited 11 years for her fucking boyfriend to propose didn't buy a dress yet....and they finally did get engaged this past Christmas.

My WTF is that I'll be having my baby's 1st birthday party next Saturday. Eeek!

Thats the news clip about the dash for the cheap gowns. Sister shows up on the TV behind the reporter at 8 seconds in, and Brandy comes up right after that. Yeah, she is the one who decided to stick her tongue out at the camera while getting fitted.

I think I saw her few seconds of fame. Cat has a good point you should most likely heed, though.

Can anyone tell me how that is humanly possible? I mean, playing the piano I can figure out how you can learn the left hand by instinct, and retain your focus on the right to play the melody. Yet how can you coordinate your right foot too at the same time? And the left? It's like trying to look in both directions at the same time. o_O
Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?

That's how organs work. Pipe organs are awesome. If you've never seen or heard one before.....check this out:

Knobs begin at around 3 mins, pedal/footwork around 5 1/2 mins. NOTE: no sheet music used.

Here's one with lots of pedal:
