Or when none of that happens in the real world you may finally get it.

Dude, the traffic jams at the border are pretty much an inevitability. Only a complete and utter moron wouldn't grasp that.

Traffic jams are a fact of life like death and taxes yeah. By none of that I meant the stuff in your most recent post that as 'economy crashes the line of trucks both in and out of the country will diminish rapidly in size'.

I was referring to the time after av backlog forms. The conclusion is nevertheless that backlogs aren't just a time related problem in this case.

Sure it is. If extra people need to be hired and trained that too is a matter of time.

There's a big difference between that and the fictitious and entirely false claims of Hazir earlier that it was impossible to trade due to a lack of certification.

No, it is a matter of money, availability of personnel resources, capacity of infrastructure such as holding areas etc. No money has been allocated, no training can be undertaken because you don't know what to train people for, no land has been purchased for holding areas for lorries, no investments have been made to sufficiently scale up stocking of components and so on. This is not simply a matter of time.

Meanwhile back in the real world away from the fictitious impending doom and gloom you guys imagine private sector investment in manufacturing in the UK is at record highs.

All figures are inflation-adjusted current prices, see Table 4: https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/gross...dustryandasset

Private sector manufacturing investment in current prices
    1997 £24.795bn
    1998 £25.43bn
    1999 £24.815bn
    2000 £24.061bn
    2001 £21.12bn
    2002 £19.077bn
    2003 £18.078bn
    2004 £17.573bn
    2005 £18.751bn
    2006 £19.032bn
    2007 £20.381bn
    2008 £20.742bn
    2009 £16.674bn
    2010 £17.055bn
    2011 £19.411bn
    2012 £20.651bn
    2013 £21.237bn
    2014 £23.78bn
    2015 £25.359bn
    2016 £24.522bn
    2017 £26.851bn

For 2018Q1 it is £6.863bn, which is the highest Q1 figure on record.

Since people keep banging on about cars and planes its worth noting that investment in "Engineering and vehicles" manufacturing is ditto at a record high with 2017 being the highest on record and 2018Q1 the highest on record.

But yeah we have impending doom and gloom

Very little in the way of recently decided investments, and all investments predicated on continued frictionless trade.

2 years after the ballot we have a record high but there's "very little in the way of recently decided investments"? Sure ...

Of course the requirement for a deal doesn't just go one way. EU firms are exposed to £29 trillion of derivatives next March.

Makes some trucks at the border look a bit puny in comparison.

What you don't understand: For the EU you're a sideshow. An annoyance. A buzzing fly we'll swat when we finally get around to it.

In the grand scheme of things, you. do. not. matter.

You do not seem to realize that you're this close to pissing off the people who matter completely because of your ineptitude.

Get your house in order. Time is running out for you.

Yes. ONS's approach to estimating GFCF involves counting assets used in production for at least one year. Businesses and govt. typically make decisions on substantial investments into tangible fixed assets a year or so in advance (eg. building a new manufacturing facility, making a large purchase of expensive and sophisticated equipment, etc). Over the course of the post-ref negotiations, businesses have repeatedly been led to believe that the outcome will be a soft Brexit, especially early on (see surveys of business leaders' expectations). What the ONS is reporting are the results of business leaders' hopes of a soft Brexit a year ago. Meanwhile, overall business growth in Q1 2018 is estimated by the ONS to be -0.2% compared to the previous quarter. Observing that the numbers are at a "record high" here is as meaningless as your daft remarks about record-setting levels of staffing for the NHS. Put into context, these claims are unimpressive.

Well, it's about the effort your government's proposals merit.

I wonder what a no deal is going to look like, it should be fun. Because unlike what Breximaniacs think a no deal of course isn't a deal to make things go smoother. I just means the the door slamming shut and hitting your asses hard.
    Congratulations America

  16. #2206
Indeed it will be up to us and our £40 billion we walk away with to make things go smoother.

You don't really understand how this all works, do you?

I'll repeat myself: Get back into your pub and stay there. Better for everyone involved.

£40 billion wouldn't make things go particularly smooth, even if it actually were worth £40 billion in today's money after a no-deal hard Brexit.

Washington’s slap-down of Britain is the second big trade reality check for May in less than a fortnight. Only last week, the U.K.’s increasingly fragile position in trade disputes was exposed by the country’s inability to prevent new, ultra-high tariffs from the U.S. that could hit thousands of jobs in a plane factory in Northern Ireland.

In a fast-developing second trade spat, Washington has teamed up with Brazil, Argentina, Canada, New Zealand, Uruguay and Thailand to reject Britain’s proposed import arrangements for crucial agricultural goods such as meat, sugar and grains after Brexit. The fact that the U.K.’s opponents include the U.S., Canada and New Zealand is a significant setback because Britain is trying to style its former colonies as natural strategic and commercial allies after it has quit the EU.

“We cannot accept such an agreement,” reads the letter, seen by POLITICO. The seven countries dispute the legal defense that the proposed post-Brexit arrangement would leave them “no worse off.”

    Delicate balance
The countries were particularly aggrieved that they had not been consulted and stressed that no calculation of Britain’s tariff-rate quotas could be agreed at the WTO “without our agreement.”

Indeed, the countries suggested Britain and the EU might need to rework the whole system of import tariffs and could not just shuffle quotas between each other, without disturbing “the delicate balance of concessions and entitlements that is fundamental to the global trade architecture today.”

“The modification of these tariff rate quota access arrangements cannot credibly be achieved through a technical rectification. None of these arrangements should be modified without our agreement.”

The big food exporters argue that two fixed quotas — a U.K. quota and an EU27 quota — make markets less easy to sell to than one big quota.
Good article about a development that is entirely in line with what was expected wrt quotas since before the referendum. Meanwhile, AIG has announced that it'll move its EU business from the UK to the EU. With friends like these, who needs enemies?

Because the EU and the UK are now going to move forward with this plan despite the strong opposition that still remains and which is described in detail in the article (and which was predicted by critics of Brexit before the referendum).

Because I have not found any detailed recent articles laying out the issues clearly. I expect they'll start popping up again once the negotiations with the WTO run into problems.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if ministers proposed to catapult the ring across the border.

The fun part (which Rand will likely vehemently deny without actually having a clue about what the topic) is that the UK will be under a lot of pressure to implement such a system. Pressure means a rush job.

And rush jobs in software development either mean a buggy mess, budgetary overruns, massive time slippages, essential features left out ... or a random combination of the points I just mentioned.

You do NOT want to rush such a thing.

It's going to suck and take twice as long as expected no matter what, but while most such govt projects are intended to replace or improve a system that's already in place, in this case there will be nothing to keep things going somewhat smoothly until the new system is ready to be implemented. The problems with development will be further exacerbated by the govt's ignorance about what it is they need to order.

On another note, it must be extremely frustrating for SMEs in logistics etc. to have their assessments--of how their business will be impacted in various scenarios--nonchalantly dismissed as fear-mongering, posturing etc.

I can't be bothered to go through the entire 'accord', but I guess it won't be very long before we find out if this is BRINO or just another pie in the sky plan that isn't acceptable. Difficult to tell with all the newspeak it contains.
