    That's nonsense though, right?
    Pretty much nonsense yes.

Thanks to the profligacy of past governments (G. Brown I'm looking at you) we spend more per annum on interest than we do on the NHS. Even a marginal increase in interest rates can lead to a major increase in debt.

Except that the government has a very long spread on its loans meaning very few mature and need renewing at any one time, it would take about 50 years for an interest rate rise to filter through to all our debt. The immediate impact of any interest rate rise or fall is rather minimal.

Secondly interest rates aren't set by what the ratings agencies set but instead the yield that investors on the bond markets demand.

And strangely enough those demands are linked to the ratings. So even if the paid interest isn't set by the rate, there is a direct connection between the two.
    Congratulations America

Yet strangely enough those demands are not linked to the ratings.

The UK 10 year bond yield rate today is virtually identical to what it was seven days ago.

Donald Tusk: UK is dropping cake-and-eat-it approach to Brexit

So... Brexit is a cake we want to both have and eat, but we... dropped it? We dropped the cake? ...but we're still trying to eat the cake off the floor? Donald Tusk says the UK is trying to eat Brexit off the floor. Or we picked up the cake (Brexit) first, and the UK negotators have invoked the five second rule?

They are expected to offer (= request) a two year long extension to the five second rule (implementation period).

Interesting, the continued rights of EU citizens rest on treaty rather than British law. Now all you guys have to do is admit this falls under the jurisdiction of the ECJ and there is real progress to be reported to the Council.
    Congratulations America

  7. #817
They rest on Treaty for as long as we are a party to the Treaty. Once we have left that Treaty no longer applies and the ECJ is a foreign court.

Name any nation subject to a foreign court like that. It is an absurd imperialist suggestion. What you are proposing is like suggesting that the House of Lords should have remained the highest court of India following its independence.

    And yet..

How's your trade worth the US going by the way? Enjoy the special relationship punitive rate much?

Because Democrats are less inclined towards protectionism?
    Congratulations America

Bill Clinton signed NAFTA and Obama signed TPP before the oaf pulled out of it.

The question is not from a history pop quiz but about actual present day US politics.

In the mean time appearantly your PM has confirmed that the rights of EU citizens will be protected by the exit treaty. So, that makes you a province of the EU then?
    Congratulations America

Yes and I think a lot of politicians on both sides of the aisle are a lot less protectionist and understand trade a lot better than the squatter in the oval office.

Aimless even assuming those numbers are legitimate (I'm not convinced they are), that's not because we have gone into recession as the lies told by those who backed Remaining insisted would happen, it's because our economic partners in the G7 have started to recover at last.

That is a good thing to be celebrated.

This is not protectionism, it's another expression of crony capitalism sustained by industry lobbying, and neither party is immune to that particular affliction.

Good point and crony capitalism is a very bad thing. Hopefully the threats to cancel even bigger orders for fighter jets from Boeing will concentrate minds over some sales of 100-seater planes that Boeing don't even make any competition for.

The CS300 is considered to be a threat to Boeing's short-to-medium-range 737 business.

The right wing breximaniacs have a new theory : supposedly Merkel and Macron don't want a Brexit deal to keep Barnier from becoming the next president of the commission. So besides putting the blame on the evil EU they make clear that Britain is merely a plaything to be toyed with in internal EU politics.
    Congratulations America

Someone should just get her a punching bag with Johnson's face on it.

Not sure what Johnson has to do with that story other than in the most tangential case of being one who pushed for Brexit in the first place, but then she [if by she you mean May] has accepted that already. Those MEPs plainly broke party discipline and the appropriate sanction has to follow through.

Johnson has been publicly and privately undermining May for weeks, but can't be touched. Party needs an outlet for its self-loathing rage.

    Plus ca change

Brown undermined Blair for about 14 years without being touched. Politics draws big personalities.

The UK is going to negotiate the best trade agreements.
Hope is the denial of reality

  29. #839
Well if Greenpeace are criticising us setting up trade deals then it must be bad.

Oh wait no. If it was the Adam Smith Institute etc then that would be bad.
