Thread: Pulling down statues

    Default Pulling down statues

In response to the insane suggestion that Nelson's Column should be pulled down, this is a brilliant response.
    http://www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenter...suggestion-to/
A Guardian columnist has written that Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square should be toppled - but Maajid Nawaz has perfectly summed up why that suggestion is “puerile”.

In the controversial article, writer Afua Hirsch describes Admiral Horatio Nelson as a “white supremacist” and a “slave trader”.

As the US argues over whether to remove confederate statues, Ms Hirsch says the monument, which has stood in London for over 150 years, should also be torn down.

Discussing the article on his show, Maajid denounced the idea, describing it as an attempt to try and censor history just because it offends some people.

“Where do you draw the line,” the LBC presenter said as he embarked on his passionate rant.

“Let’s start tearing down Richard the Lion Heart because he participated in the crusade and that offends me too.

“Why stop there? Queen Victoria, she reigned over the British Empire and colonised large parts of the world including South Asia.

“Let’s stop calling it Victoria Station, Victoria Hall, let’s remove everything with Queen Victoria’s name on it - including all the Navy ships we named after her.”

He continued: “What about Queen Elizabeth? Queen Elizabeth reigned over for a brief time when we still had some remanence of the Empire left.

“Let’s remove everything with Queen Elizabeth’s name on it, including any monuments and statues put up to her name.”

Maajid finished: “Hold on, she’s still our Queen isn’t she - that means we’ve got to remove the monarchy.”

    I'd vote for that

Nelson isn't being commemorated because of whatever participation he had or didn't have in the slave trade, he's being commemorated for destroying Frenchmen and Spaniards when they started shit. That's the difference between him and the Confederate monuments in the US.

That and the statue wasn't put there as a passive-aggressive gesture by crypto-racists to remind black people how much they hate them for existing, and who are apparently laboring under the impression that the rest of us are blind to this tactic.

According to your source, it is not morons but a moron, specifically, it was a column in a Guardian. Since when has an opinion piece ever been published in a British newspaper that wasn't ridiculous nonsense?

When you've heard about that Robert Lee thing and want to join in, but don't really understand what it's about.

NYC announced they will review all public markers for purging. Now the totalitarians are talking about renaming Columbus Circle and removing the tomb of the Union General Grant (he did and said some bad things about Jews).

Amerikan academic lunacy (similar to Germany anti-tech lunacy) has migrated to the outside world and it's terrifying.

Gee this was totally going to stop with the Confederates and not move on to other things . . .

I looked into it, and all I could find was a couple of plaques to Robert Lee being removed, not some terrifying Orwellian crackdown. Why, it's almost like Dreadnaught declined to provide a source for a reason!

Everything that's going on at the moment - Nazis killing people in the streets, egged on a mental lunatic in the White House, and tensions with North Korea - and this is what you find terrifying? Are you trying to qualify for the next Olympics in being oblivious and self-centered?

The push back against Columbus predates the current racist statue hoopla and the BLM. Cities and schools, for decades, have refused to honor Columbus or have reinvented the holiday as Indigenous People Day.

sounds like a correcting of whitewashed and incorrect assumptions about our history.

Sounds like neither to me. Can celebrate the good while recognising and remorsing the bad - and virtually anyone significant in history has both.

That one person being "City Council Speaker". The Speaker of the City Council should not be dismissed as just "one person" like its a raving lunatic on the streets.

    a) it's not that lunatic. You are just blowing this whole thing way out of proportion. I find it extremely funny that you don't give a shit about racism or black people being murdered in cold blood by police and do everything you can to derail conversation with insipid whataboutism, both-sideism and generally minimize the issue with bullshit every time they come up, but apparently getting rid of of a few statues or renaming a street is beyond the pale . It's really telling about what your priorities are.
    b) You started this thread because someone wrote a column in the Guardian.
    c) Up in Carlisle, they have this piece of public art near the castle called the 'cursing stone', which is a big stone with a curse issued by a 16th century bishop after he got sick of the border reivers and their bullshit written on it. After Carlisle was flooded in 2005, a local councilman said it should be got rid of it because he thought it had caused the floods, and foot and mouth (even though foot and mouth was national). Because he was stupid. So, you see, local government is not immune to lunatics. I suppose some newspaper short of a few column inches could have written a headline "SUPERSTITION ON THE RISE: ANGER AFTER CALLS TO REMOVE PUBLIC ART IN COUNTY TOWN OVER FEARS OF CURSE" and then someone could have posted an alarmist thread on the topic back on AtariCC as it would have been back then. But it's still just one person's opinion.
    d) But this really isn't all that lunatic. I don't really agree, but I can see why someone would make the argument. Calm down.
    e) If you're about to reference 1984, don't. Just don't.

Columbus should NOT be revered in this country. He terrorized the natives of several islands and seemed to not accomplish much else.

The confederate statues need to go. Put them in a museum so they can be used as reminders of horrid thinking and the dark part of our history.

    Steely said it well.

Since social media can take one opinion written by a jerk or troll, and turn it into a travesty! with apoplectic comments that go viral, everyone needs to calm down.

I'm more disturbed by Dread saying Amerikan academic lunacy (similar to Germany anti-tech lunacy) has migrated to the outside world and it's terrifying.

Dread is easily frightened by everything except existential threats. It is a magnificent testament to the incredible success of human effort and ingenuity that he can actually survive in this world
