Thread: Oh the Irony

A reasonable politician would pass populist legislation that would have little negative effect and resist populist legislation that would have a significantly negative effect. Crist made no distinction between the two.

That's great. Which means that absolutely nothing will move forward (or backward) in politics if we follow Loki's advice.

Please, Loki, almost any significant move in politics will have some kind of negative effect.

I'm talking about net effects. How the heck do you move forward if a policy does more bad than good? Do you just argue to look smart? Because it has the opposite effect.

Yes, because net effects are so easily calculated, especially beforehand. Are we talking about short-term, middle-term or long-term effects here?

How do you calculate an incalculable environmental impact vs. job creation vs. pissing off another country, for example?

I actually totally forgot about that announcement until you mentioned it. Probs because everyone knows we were already drilling like mad offshore even before the "restrictions" were lifted.

But seriously, big fail on the oil well "cap".

'Too expensive' for the acoustic control that costs $500,000 Now they're spending 6 million per day.

Next up--some huge DOME to cover the surface oil, suck it up into carriers and move it, then set that on fire?

  9. #39
If they can suck it up, they can still process and sell it

Anybody want to guess how much taxpayer money will be spent on this Spill of National Significance and how much of that maoney will be repaid. I'm seeing another socialist bailout for a private sector fuck-up.

Socialism is OK if it helps corporations, you see.

Make the friggin oil companies buy insurance to pay for their mess ups. Then the market takes care of the risk, like it should.

  14. #44
I somehow doubt that BP will need a bailout...

  15. #45
Do you think BP and Transocean can pay for the whole clean-up? Reimburse the Coast Guard, the environmental groups, the fishermen, etc?

  16. #46
You already said they're facing numerous lawsuits...it's not like they're tight on cash.

But make them pay for the damages. ALL of them. Oh yes, make them pay. MUAhahaha!

  18. #48
I don't think they have enough liability insurance to cover the costs. They'd have to go bankrupt, or the insurers would.

I don't think they go bankrupt that easily.

I guess we'll find out! The oyster industry is saying it may take 20 years to get back to normal. Something like 60% of our domestic fish industry is in that region.

Bankrupt? BP had an operating revenue of $240 billion in 2009. I think not.

Yeah, all BP has to pay is $75 million plus clean up.

Under the law that established the reserve, called the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, the operators of the offshore rig face no more than $75 million in liability for the damages that might be claimed by individuals, companies or the government, although they are responsible for the cost of containing and cleaning up the spill.
    Taxpayers pick up the rest...

Rainy day fund with limits, huh. From a tax that consumers ultimately pay.

Funny thing about "insurance"....it doesn't make things safer or better or less risky. Quite the opposite. Aren't we clever?

edit: Florida alone attracts 80 million tourists that spend 60 billion. Per year. Add in the fishing industry and commerce ports, LA and Alabama....what a mess.

BP is laying down chemicals from the air, to make the oil sink. But that's going to kill the shrimp and oyster beds, and effect coral reefs. Not to mention the chemicals the fish and birds will ingest. There's no way to boom the whole Gulf, but the oil has spread three times its size in just two days. It's now larger than the size of Puerto Rico.

BP also tried to get the fishermen to sign hold-harmless indemnity clauses, in order to work in the oil clean-up. Nice.

Maybe because it might not be?
