Many/most of those currently seeking asylum have legitimate claims to asylum on the basis of fleeing generalized violence that especially targets women and children. They are entitled, under international law, to seek asylum, and they are entitled, under both domestic and international law, to due process. You cannot safeguard an asylum seeker's due process rights if you have a judge assessing a couple of hundred cases a day where the applicants do not have access to legal counsel, an interpreter, or—and this is just so deeply shameful—their legal guardians.
