The implications of his remarks are clear enough that current and former officials and assorted experts have seen fit to make public statements indicating what a spectacular self-own this interview was. Will the ambassador be reprimanded or even sent back? Or is this the new new new normal?

I am of course asking about the official response from Germany and not about the reaction from media in your banana republic.

Which is diplomat speak for: "You fucked up. Now shut your trap before you insert your foot any further into your mouth."

I rather suspect the feeling is mutual just the latter are diplomatic enough not to say it to the media.

Governments have openly and covertly intervened in other nations forever. Not normally with allies though.
Rand, this is a diplomat and not a spy. Other rules apply for diplomats. Not that hard to understand.

What part of openly and covertly did you miss? Diplomats generally do the open bits, spies the covert bits. Again not normally with allies.
