We've been in Sthlm for a couple of weeks now, and, because it's been such a fantastic summer, we've mostly walked around town, exploring new places, around 10-15km a day. It feels like discovering a whole new city, and this is the third time I've had this weird experience. It's made me realize how easy it is so get stuck in routines, where I mostly move around in familiar places and do familiar things. I think it's a good idea to restart the explore-exploit algorithm from time to time, even when we're "at home". I currently live and work in a much smaller town, where I've been for twelve years, and even there I've felt like I've been exploring a whole new town this year. This bodes well for the future: if we ever have to put traveling abroad on hold for a couple of years, I'll have plenty of satisfying exploration right where I am.
