My sister stole some nail polish and panty hose when she was a teenager, with more than enough cash in her purse to pay for it. The store's security guard called the police and our parents, and the situation was "resolved" in the manager's office: no official charges, no police record. She was allowed to pay for the items and go home, with a severe scolding and a promise from our parents that she'd be "grounded" for a month or something.

Sure, shoplifting is a problem for all retailers, but not all shoplifters or "product loss" are treated equally. In my sister's case, she was a cute white girl from the suburbs, with parents that could drop everything and rush to the store. If she'd been black or brown, with parents that couldn't be reached or couldn't leave work, it would have ended differently. That was over 40 years ago, but not much has changed. Hello?
The solution isn't to treat black or brown criminals like your sister, its to treat your sister like any other criminal. Teach them a lesson, put it on their record. Not only will they think twice but their social circle will as well.

You only say that because you like the idea of a police state, not because you want any equal justice under the law.

Nothing like a criminal record to force someone to mend their ways...by being unable to get a decent job for the rest of their life.

Oh yes, shoplifting on your record prevents you from getting any job anywhere. Please.

You have fuckers who literally get DUIs and kill people and play for the NFL. Obviously not everyone can get a NFL job but there are plenty of people with petty crimes on their record (ie not felonies) that find jobs. Hell people with felon records get jobs. With the Trump economy unemployment is really low.

Are you being serious Lewk? Obviously the above applies less to a handful of industries where talent is easily measurable and generates a huge amount of money. It also doesn't apply to people whose daddy is a CEO and can order HR to ignore its normal practices. But for a vast majority of jobs, a felony is a death sentence. A shoplifting conviction would make it difficult to even get a fast food job.
