Default That's not a "final solution"

I'm not sure what to focus on--the fact that this person is a senator in the first place, or the fact that he was criticized in the strongest terms by so many other politicians. Sad state of affairs overall, I think.

Thank the ludicrous PR voting system in use in the Australian Senate. This is a man who got "elected" because he got 19 votes in a state-wide election. 19 people in his entire state voted for him.

    19 votes.

    19!

It's almost funny how people jump at the 'nazi' angle because of the use of the translation of 'Endlosung'.

As if the 'Endlösung' was a word regularly used in Nazi propaganda against immigration which makes this man stand in a despicable German tradition, rather than just being an exponent of British Empire racism.

He was reviled, by his peers, for more than just that. While the Nazi reference is the bit that's easiest to sell to the public, this man is basically calling for a return to so-called "white Australia" policies, which no other Australian politician is ready to openly call for.

So we agree a ‘white Australia’ headline had been more relevant to what he promotes?

Yes, but I don't think that's an immediately recognizable reference to the broader public, whereas the "final solution" reference is both immediately recognizable and gives a clear indication of his crappiness.

Globally yes but not nationally. Growing up in Australia I can 100% guarantee the White Australia Policy is the more well known immediately recognisable issue locally. It ranks along with the Stolen Generation as Australia's biggest source of shame that you learn about in school. Those two and Gallipoli are the three things about Australia in the 20th century we studied the most at school.

Anyone who chooses to reference that is a scumbag who knows exactly what he is saying. His domestic audience knows it too.

If so, then it is truly sad that 40-50% of all Australians favour a ban or partial ban on Muslim immigration.

It is. Though that said the White Australia Policy had to do with all non-whites not just Muslims but Sikhs and more specifically (East) Asians.
