    Default Canada Legalised Cannabis Use

Legalisation fulfils a 2015 campaign promise by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the leader of the governing Liberal Party.

The prime minister has argued that Canada's nearly century-old laws criminalising use of the drug have been ineffective, given that Canadians are still among the world's heaviest users.

He said the new law is designed to keep drugs out of the hands of minors and profits out of the hands of criminals.

The federal government also predicts it will raise $400m a year in tax revenues on the sale of cannabis.

Cannabis possession first became a crime in Canada in 1923 but medical use has been legal since 2001.

Canada follows in the footsteps of Uruguay, which became the first country in the world to legalise the sale of cannabis for recreational use in 2013. A number of US states have also voted to end prohibition.

Medical marijuana is also gaining ground in many European countries.
Overall a good thing I feel.

Cannabis and tobacco should be treated exactly the same - strongly discouraged, banned in public places, banned in front of children, but legal at home.

Tobacco should be illegal, IMHO, strictly because it's so addictive.
    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

But alcohol is ok? Also not sure how you ban something "in front of children" but make it legal at home.

How about no. End the war on drugs but start a war on tobacco? Nonsense.

How about free choice is the key to everything, and addiction, at the level of nicotine, robs you of that. How the fuck can you endorse a product that massively addicts its users? Making nicotine the illegal drug that it should be doesn't mean we should continue the lunacy of the War on Drugs. But it does mean we don't sell the shit in stores.

Sigh. Do you not know that alcohol is nowhere near as addictive as nicotine? Everyone gets addicted to nicotine, but only a minority become alcoholics. And I don't know what you are talking about banning in front of children but legal at home.

No, not "everyone" who smokes tobacco gets addicted to nicotene. Just as not "everyone" who drinks alcohol becomes an alcoholic.

I've known plenty of recreational or social smokers that aren't addicted to tobacco. It's probably easier to be a drinker than a smoker, due to today's socio-cultural norms. Plenty of cocktail parties, beer laden tail gate parties, or golf outings with binge drinkers and on-the-verge alcohol addicts, many of whom drive away intoxicated with altered judgement and cause accidents (but second hand smoke is worse?) Weird way to support Uber or self-driving cars as a "health initiative" for drinkers, huh.

Legal at home was a reply to Rand.

I knew plenty of "social smokers" when I was young, and every one of them became a "regular smoker" aka addict. The addiction is stronger with some than others, but I call BS on the myth of the smoker who just has a cigarette casually, once in a while.

And I call BS on your idea that prohibition solves addiction problems.

Might as well ban the internet because your kids are most likely addicted to their screens and smart phones, with proven negative health impacts such as high rates of anxiety, depression and suicide.

Plenty of people have quit smoking. You still have free will.

    Agreed

ETA: But with added impairment checks as with alcohol, such as being under the influence while driving or being a professional where impairment has an impact such as pilots or operators of heavy machinery.

Sorry Choobs, but I'm one of those people.

For ten years, from the age of 18 to 28, I was a casual smoker - only smoking when out in pubs and bars socially or with friends at home having a drink, and never at any other time - it became a sort of self-imposed rule. While on a trip to south america and hiking at altitude, I noticed others on the trip who were much older than me were struggling less with being out of breath. I put that down to smoking having a negative impact on my breathing abilities, even though only a casual smoker. I gave up on the spot, didn't touch another cigarette, and didn't miss smoking afterward.

Pornography is legal at home but I wouldn't show it to children. Treat second hand smoke in front of children as child abuse but have it legal at home so long as there are no kids present.

Pollute your own lungs at home I don't give a shit. Don't pollute innocent kids with that poison. The fact they may be your kids doesn't give you a right to do so any more than it would give you a right to inject children with cocaine.
