Default How should truancy be dealt with? Oregon may have the answer

    This is beyond satire.

Oregon Governor Sends State Troopers After Lawmakers Who Fled State To Block Passage Of Cap And Trade

Meanwhile, the Oregon GOP was just busted tweeting out an image purported to show a right wing militia that had cowed democratic legislators into hiding, but that actually depicts something else entirely.

    Some context and history:
When that militia took over part of Oregon from Utah a few years ago, all the Republican presidential candidates, including Trump, tripped over themselves to endorse the cause of the terrorists (though stopping short of endorsing the action exactly)

Then the GOP in Portland agreed to allow rightwing militias provide their security instead of law enforcement:

    https://www.portlandmercury.com/blog...o-run-security

Encouraged, a bunch of out-of-state rightwing militia types continued to invade Oregon. It was shown that they had a cozy relationship with the police the entire time:
    https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/20...warm-exchange/

There were other escalations. The right-wingers marched on one of the few minority strongholds in Oregon:

Some of the militia-types felt emboldened to start killing:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_P...d_train_attack

    Started sacking union halls:
    https://www.portlandmercury.com/blog...ayer-attention

    Among other things.
Thus far, the only response has been the GOP cheerleading and endorsing these assholes, the police cozying up to them, and the courts being very selective about what they do to these creeps, and they keep coming.

Lately, looking for a fight, they came down town and started bear-macing patrons in a bar. The police, slow to respond, were too late to do anything and little happened. So the owner of the establishment is trying to use civil courts to finally bring these jerks in:
    https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/20...ay-on-may-day/

These fascists have, in retaliation, decided to come back to Portland, burn the court papers, and try to pick fights yet again:

Yet according to morons like lewk the real threat is antifa throwing pee and it's really not that big of a thing that right wing terrorists are now shutting down an entire state.

That's quite a list of links! But I'm confused -- the OP Forbes article was mostly about Oregon's cap & trade bill than legislators' "truancy"-- and OG's links are about Republicans using right-wing militias for "security".

*Leaving the state just to block a vote (by preventing the required quorum) is bad political behavior, but it doesn't appear to be illegal.
*Oregon's governor shouldn't expect state police to round up legislators for bad political behavior, that's probably abuse of power.
*If this is a time-limited vote, the Gov. can call a special session and try again.

As for the GOP getting cozy with militias, that's a whole other ball of wax. They can't claim to care about Rule of Law when they go outside the normal/regulated police forces by using militia known to be hate groups (and on domestic terrorism watch lists).

Process matters. Following norms and rules is important. Especially for People in Power!

Always the same story "when my side does it, its fine, when their side does it, its evil" This applies for Rs and Ds.

    Its almost as if context...matters.

The Texas Eleven were fighting against gerrymandering, something you just expressed no interest in stopping, but a subject that most people who care about democracy have a unfavorable opinion of. The Texas Eleven also didn't threaten to kill the law enforcement officers who were sent after them. They also didn't spread fake news to their terrorist supporters into order to bring the state government to a grinding halt.

But hey, its all the same.

It's almost as if sometimes people don't get their way in a democracy.

And to be honest, in both cases, lawmakers should do their job. If i don't come to work I get fired, i don't fire at people.
