Certainly, the velocity is the biggest danger, but if it wasn't this high, it wouldn't be able to wash away whatever materials they've used as a base layer for the pavement that has happened to a lot of older bridges so far. The Highway Patrol made a habit the last couple of days of showing bridges that looked safe to drive on only to show from the side that the only thing left of the bridge is the few inches of the asphalt, so that's why the particular height was more of my focus. But the power of that discharge really can't be understated. Just a bit north upstream of that bridge, it ended up cresting about a foot and a half lower than we were expecting with it pushing just under 5000 cubic feet per second of water. Usually, we see the discharge in the area of 560, so anything going into that flow would be a disaster.
I can see that. Guess I'm used to everything here being encased in concrete thanks to tides and saltwater.

It is a subtly confusing problem, of course, and most people have zero background in probability. I'm not even surprised by the 'academic' responses - depending on your definition, most academics don't really have much background in probability, either. I seriously doubt the video's implication - that it was vos Savant's gender which caused so many people to disagree with her answer. I suspect that any public explanation of the problem would have garnered a similar response; the other times mentioned were in academic contexts to a specialist audience, so it's far more likely they'd follow the math and agree with the presenter.
