    Default Banana republic alert

Barr's DOJ undermines prosecutorial independence by attempting to reduce Roger Stone's upcoming sentence, in deference to Trump:

Four prosecutors have withdrawn from the case in protest over this disgraceful banana republic stunt. What an absolute joke of a nation.

You can make your point without condemning the whole nation, ya know.

Millions of Americans are disturbed by what's happening under the Trump administration, but we've been fighting the same problems since at least the Nixon era.

This might seem new to you, but it's a rehash of history to me. An important difference now is how the internet and social media have changed perceptions, but the playbook is still Nixonian: control the message by undermining the press (media), convince voters that everything is conspiracy/hoax/witch hunt, exploit their fears and mistrusts, stack the courts with political loyalists....so POTUS can act like a benevolent dictator, and no one notices the constitutional republic is being shredded.

The other difference is that Republicans are now on board with things that used to be antithetical to their "conservative" principles, like executive/presidential supremacy. The GOP isn't so grand these days, but they'll apparently do anything to hang onto their political power, even if it means supporting Trump.

What are you going to do? Impeach him again?

Calling out (R) for their hypocrisy would be a good start. Turning the Senate to a (D) majority and ridding Mitch McConnell of his "leadership" would be even better.

Sooner or later it all goes bananas...

I really would prefer the mango chutney style.

As Lewk says, what are we/they going to do, impeach Trump again? He was acquitted. Now it's his turn in the quid pro quo. Because after all, an acquittal means it was all just fake and an attempt to smear him, right?

After over 20 years online, listening to Americans affect a learned air and talk about the importance of "checks and balances" in their system of government and then this happens the first thing they get a president that doesn't follow the rules, this is funny.

    Not massively funny, but still.

Especially when the people who were shouting loudest about small government are the ones not just supporting but actively cheerleading for Trump's actions. Because they make the libs cry and all.

Generally proponents of small government would find the entire Roger Stone investigation, arrest and trial to be absurd.

I mean... you're not wrong, but I don't know why you're bringing that up as if it's a point in their favour.

I did think the GOP in Congress was going to be somewhat less craven than they turned out to be. I thought the initial pushback against Trump being obnoxious and treating them like minions would develop into something. And the courts have still been doing their jobs in the checks and balances department.

The president admits he's trying to use the govt. to punish NY for the legitimate legal action they've brought against him:

Those 'proponents' complained about Executive overreach....but only when a Obama was president. Today's GOP doesn't seem to mind one bit when they support/enable Trump's authoritarianism. Small government isn't really a guiding principle for Republicans -- it's just a marketing tool, a meme.

New York's state-level politics were swamped by democratic socialists a few years ago and one highlight so far is they have passed a number of laws that are poorly thought-out. In one swoop, New York started giving licenses to illegal aliens and stopped giving the Federal Government access to NY driver's license records without a court order. But they forgot that the federal government uses that state driver's license database access for frequent, mundane things like background checks. New York is not the only state that gives driver's licenses to illegal aliens, but they are the only state that restricts access to databases.

If the federal and NY state governments had more mature people involved, they would have spotted this issue and resolved it. Instead we have those bluster and filing of lawsuits.

He just commutted Blagojevich?!?! Jesus Christ! He didn't exactly get targeted by a partisan effort. The Illinois legislature was practically unanimous in their actions against him. He was literally holding sales on political appointments.

Yeah... I don't get that one. At all.

Simple. He was a contestant on one of Trump's reality shows.

Corrupt politician jailed for trying to profit from his political office. Gee, why would Trump want to pardon him.

Pardoning some lame corrupt Democrat isn't an impeachable offense, its just weird.

It's only weird if you're in denial about who and what Trump is.

Of course you don't. Denial only works in the short term.

I'm confused about who you are and what you're defending. Are you the Dread who wouldn't have used the term "illegal aliens" in a policy debate about state vs federal rights...or are you Gentry?

Would it be less weird to you if it was a Republican?

And this isn't weird, considering the Senate Republicans pretty much told him "you can do anything you want", and now he does.

    Can't be, Gentry raises palominos.

    I wasn't joking.

It's one thing to have ideas that change and evolve over time, and defend that; it's another to create an alternate identity and pose as an alter-ego, waiting until the political climate is ripe with confusion. Dread did that, and so did the GOP. I'm just connecting the dots and calling it out.

Not better but less weird yes.
