Also keep in mind Belgium has much wider inclusion criteria for their numbers, so in reality there's a good chance the US already passed Belgium.

US covid deaths are probably well over 200k already. Lewk is basically posting exhibit A for how crappy the US has been at testing.

It might be a mistake to focus on death rates, when the sequelae is turning out to be quite tragic for younger people. That means an entire generation could be facing covid co-morbidities and disabilities for the rest of their lives. It's already considered a pre-existing condition that precludes military service. It's just a matter of time before Insurance companies enact their healthcare coverage denials, or refuse coverage to anyone who's ever had a covid + test.

The only special exemptions are reserved for the wealthy 10%, who don't need it anyway.

Looks like Belgium finally gave up the top spot to Peru.
    Incorrect as always.

Correct picture below, as of 3rd Sept.

USA along with Peru, Chile and Brazil are reporting the highest Covid deaths per million.

Cue usual radio silence from Lewk when his numbers are corrected.

Yes, the impact of long-term morbidity is definitely being underestimated. tbf it can't really be estimated at this point, but it's definitely not something governments should be neglecting.

In Europe, France and Spain are both seeing a huge resurgence in cases.

Showing different things. Lewk's list compares cumulative deaths per million. Your graph shows daily btw deaths per million. The latter is definitely more useful and interesting at this stage and Lewk's desperate antics are kinda embarrassing.

I'd like to see a graph that shows the health impact on low-wage agricultural workers. Then what the top 10% in wealthy nations (esp. the US) thinks should be the minimum wage for the workers that grow, harvest, deliver, and prepare their food. Then what's used in public assistance tax dollars to fill the gap that freeee market capitalism can't.

Hard to believe the US balked at $9.25/hour just a few years ago, and that was supposed to cover rent, utilities, transportation, food, child care, AND health insurance for these essential workers. Now they're sick or unemployed, with little to no assistance, no healthcare, and facing eviction.

Want fries or special sauce with your order?

    His is cumulative?

Well that makes sense then and why they seem to be totally off from the current picture. Relatively meaningless as a stat.

Do you not know how a race works? If you fuck up in the beginning it does hurt your overall chances. When all is said and done we'll learn which countries did well, which states did well and it will be tracked based on deaths per capita.

  11. #1751
    It's not a race.

And no it doesn't show the same thing because countries and states that were hit hard early on knew less about this and were trying to figure it out as they go along. Countries and states still being hit are doing so in full knowledge of the experience and lessons learnt. That is completely different.

Knowledge about social distancing, masks etc exists now that didn't early on (the WHO were advising against masks early on) plus medical treatments exists now to reduce morbidity that didn't in the past.

Why are you still making this point as if you're owning the libs? You do understand the US is likely to end up with one of the highest per million death tolls in the world?

    Yes, it did.

Already has. They almost certainly have well over 200k deaths due to covid, with multiple ongoing and completely uncontrolled outbreaks.

    Yes, it did.
    Yes it did what?

The treatments that exist now didn't exist in the past or weren't known to be effective in the past. The WHO etc have changed their advice throughout as we have learnt more.

Which is entirely logical what with this being a novel virus. To be having the same number of deaths now even with knowing what treatments work that other countries had when they were in the dark is absolutely. It is a failure.

And Aimless is right, the USA almost certainly has the worst record of the developed world.

They knew about masks and social distancing at least as far back as the 1918 pandemic.

Even our Whitehouse admitted that they only went against suggesting masks because they knew they didn't have enough for the front line workers and they didn't want to create a rush on masks before securing enough for them.

Yes they did, but the understanding of how they work has evolved during this pandemic.

If people aren't using PPE correctly then sometimes the use of them can make matters worse not better. Gloves are one example, people tend to mistakenly believe that gloves protect them when in reality gloves provide next to no protection at all and if you're not practicing proper handwashing because you're wearing gloves then that makes matters worse not better.

Anyway the simple fact is that the World Health Organisation and almost every western nation was not representing masks when this began. They pretty much all are now with the exception of the Tango monster in the Oval Office.

That's a preprint. As evidenced by "[Epub ahead of print]"

Khen: In this case, the epub isn't a preprint in the sense of being a draft article (like you'd find in eg arxiv). It's published electronically as soon as it is accepted and has undergone copy editing, but is called an epub until the full assigned volume is released as a unit.

Obviously it doesn't suggest the book series or its editors are very good.

What wiggin said. Also, Chandra Wickramasinghe (one of the authors) has been a proponent of a sort of "panspermy of the gaps" approach to various epidemics for at least 20 years; he has suggested extraterrestrial origin for the 1918 flu, SARS and probably other diseases as well. The problem is, as often, that he is one of those overall good and respected experts in a certain field (organic molecules in interstellar space, namely) that have some less-than-sensible beliefs on the side, so you can't really outright dismiss him as a random loony - that's probably why the article was published in the first place.

You mean to tell me that a for profit entity is prioritising profit over the lives of it's own staff? How could that possibly happen? There must be some misunderstanding.

Universal Studios theme park has hit modified capacity for the past several days. 2+ hour long waits for rides. No one cares about the virus anymore.

It's dumb because Sweden's GDP took a massive hit and also because Sweden is the quintessential nanny state, whose approach to the pandemic has relied on an extensive welfare system that safeguards eg. the right to paid sick leave—and, of course, the right to healthcare. It's even more stupid because other countries have fared better wrt both mortality and negative economic impact.
