I take it "killed thousands through incompetence" isn't on the list?
Hope is the denial of reality
This should be merged with the clown circus thread, because it is clownish.
"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
Like I said, you're the British Lewkowski.
"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
If only he'd ripped off her coronavirus response instead of her video format.
When the sky above us fell
We descended into hell
Into kingdom come
Yeah, if only he'd made us a naturally socially distanced island with a tiny population density, no cities with major mass transit and no travel with Italy at the start of this then all this could have been avoided. Why didn't he think to do that?
New Zealand have done well and made smart choices but they're also very lucky.
A country like the UK is more intrinsically vulnerable to a disease like covid-19, it's true. However, far from exonerating the government it just makes their negligence all the more criminal, since the consequences of their failure are so much higher here than they would have been in a country like New Zeland.

Interesting video. It's a shame I don't trust much of what he says. Also a bit embarrassing that it's a blatant rip-off of Jacinda Ardern's video.
In other news:
1. Johnson is recruiting for a Whitehouse-esque spokesman at £100k a year; presumably to take over many of his and his cabinet's media responsibilities. I hate this. My theory is that he's a coward and does everything he can to hide from the front line seems valid.
2. Johnson is taking inspiration form Ed Milliband's Labour manifesto by stepping in to help tackle obesity. That's good. As we have a socialised healthcare system it's right that the government take some steps to alleviate avoidable and costly use. Good job. Johnson says he's lost more than a stone recently. Probably due to being in intensive care rather than actually actively doing anything about it, but then again it's difficult to trust what he says given he doesn't know how tall he is.
3. The government are creating a new narrative about a Covid-19 second wave "rolling across Europe". This seems like a shameless attempt to create a preemptive scapegoat, by which "Europe" is the perfect fall guy, to help cover their own future failings during the coming winter. If it's not, it's good that they seem to be taking things more seriously now.
4. Johnson continues to lie/not tell the truth/misrepresent/demonstrate that he doesn't have a clue about anything, in plain sight.

A second wave has hit Spain and that's why quarantine has been introduced for anyone travelling from Spain.
The government are damned if they do, damned if they don't here. If they don't impose quarantine from countries like Spain with rising rates of the virus then people will say why not and they're acting too slow and haven't learnt lessons from the first wave. If they do, then they get damned for 'blaming Europe' and not giving notice to travellers.
This isn't party political. The fact that the UK Government (Tory), Scottish Government (SNP), Welsh Government (Labour) and NI Government (cross party, DUP led) all acted simultaneously on this should show this isn't a party political issue. Nicola Sturgeon is saying the same thing.
I'm personally not criticising the Spanish quarantine. Just the language they've been using recently.
Just ease it will ya Boris.
I have a week booked at a lovely place in Andalucia, meeting up with all my family some of whom live in Barcelona, supposedly flying out in just over two weeks from now.
Flights through our airline haven't been cancelled yet but other airlines have cancelled all flights to Spain already.
"You're not acting quickly enough" ~ The media and opposition constantly, but only in hindsight, through this pandemic.
"You acted too quickly" ~ The media and opposition for the last few announcements.
Once the decision was made should they have waited until the next day in order to have more spread but wait for a press conference? Or speak to the local authorities and Mayors, agree the measures with them, then get the message out immediately and then possibly hold the press conference the next day?
Interesting that the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Labour's Andy Burnham, is being fully supportive of this.
I have gained a lot of respect for Andy Burnham since he became Mayor, he's very responsible and cares for his community.https://www.manchestereveningnews.co...every-18692053
Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham said: "Over recent days, there has been a marked change in the picture across Greater Manchester with regard to the spread of Covid-19.
"We have gone from a falling rate of cases in nearly all of our boroughs last week to a rising rate in nine out of ten affecting communities across a much wider geography. In Rochdale, the one borough where cases have fallen, they are still too high.
"We have always said that we will remain vigilant and be ready to respond quickly should the need arise. In line with that approach, I have agreed with the Health Secretary that it is right to act on the precautionary principle and introduce modest measures now to bring down the rate of new infections.
"I ask all Greater Manchester residents - young and old alike - to protect each other by observing these new requirements. They will be reviewed weekly; meaning the more we stick to them, the quicker they will be removed.
"This is a place which prides itself on looking out for each other. We now need to be true to that by not acting selfishly and keeping the health of others in mind at all times."

A couple of tweets is not the right way to announce this.
Given we have a master of propaganda in charge it's remarkable just how badly the messaging is being delivered and maintained.
Its not a couple of Tweets. There's been Tweets including to the Government's website with a Press Statement on what the rules are. There's been co-ordinated messaging by the Health Secretary Matt Hancock and local Mayors etc. Its been top news story for the past 12 hours. The #1 news story on the BBC is an interview with the Health Secretary.
So a bit more than "a couple of Tweets"
You're right, my bad. It was 4 tweets.
Given that less than half of people have a broad understanding of the lockdown rules in England, you'd think at least a press conference, as promised, that clearly outlined the rules and areas effected, might have been a good idea.
Maybe there'll be a press conference later today. But given the alleged misunderstanding of the rules dates back to when the press conferences were going on daily and the media like Robert Peston were using them to try and sow confusion and get "gotcha" moments, maybe having a co-ordinated cross-party message go out with the Health Secretary and local Mayors pushing the same message . . . maybe, just maybe that might be a good idea?
Or do you think Andy Burnham and Matt Hancock working together cross-party and pushing a co-ordinated message for public health reasons is a bad thing?
Matt Hancock this morning, getting the rules wrong.

Good!
If only Hancock had mentioned that yesterday or this morning in his media rounds. I'll assume it isn't a spur of the moment decision amidst the confusion this morning. Look at me, giving the benefit of the doubt!
I'll assume you are right too since I confidently suggested there would be a press conference today before it was announced . The same thing happened with the Leicester lockdown from memory. It was announced in the evening then the next day there was a press conference.
Johnson isn't really talking about the northwest lockdown - more on the planned restrictions that are being postponed.
All seems very worrying. Starting to think my kids won't be back at school in September.
