Being, your link mentioned China, too. No idea what will happen...but China has a 100 year plan, and we can't seem to manage a 20 year plan....

This whole 'evacuation mission' has been handled badly, and it's disappointing but not surprising. The US is great at starting wars but sucks at ending them. That we're relying on the Taliban to usher Americans and allies to the lone airport, or that we're using a broken immigration/refugee system to vet thousands of people trying to get out....is just a recipe for disaster.

Yes but remember, China is on our side. To realize their plan they need our consumers. Sure they have more of their own consumers but our consumers spend more because our government doesn't allow us to save.

Since you asked, I'm more concerned with China's international expansions than Russia "attacking" Afghanistan.

Seems UK politicians got their panties in a bunch...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...X0X?li=BBnb7Kz

A UK government minister, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Times newspaper on August 21 that the way the U.S. withdrawal was carried out "just signaled to the world that they are not that keen on playing a global role."

"The US had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the First World War. They turned up late for the Second World War and now they are cutting and running in Afghanistan," the minister said.
Ungrateful twit. Without the U.S. he'd probably be speaking Deutsch now. And Tony Blair (Mr. mushroom cloud provocateur) should just STFU

Also, those weren't "world wars" until the U.S. got involved.

NYT journos trapped there. Who will rescue them? Not USA.
Mexico rescued them after they had been trashing Mexico.

Just some guy in the Pentagon wearily getting up from his desk, walking over the the wall, rubbing out the previous number and writing a big '0' in sharpie on the board that reads 'days since we needlessly murdered children'.

You'd think at some point someone over there would stop and think "hang on, everything we do fucking sucks; we constantly blow up the wrong people, our nation building projects fail all the time and we just generally make everything worse, maybe we need to shake things up a bit" but noooooo

What I'm not clear on now is whether these people died because an ISIS truck with explosives blew up or were they killed in the initial explosion. Not that I expect an honest answer on that one from the Pentagon or CIA.

Is the media purposely misleading the public or are they really so ignorant they believe the U.S. war in Afghanistan has ended. The U.S. was never at war in Afghanistan.

Not just to address your point, but others as well.

You are taking the incorrect thought process here, this response is upside down. Three words.

    Military Industrial Complex.

This is a business model, the number one engine that drives the miracle of US endless prosperity. War, endless wars, forever wars, killing is business and business is good, that is mantra.

Nation building is not part of that model, smashing things is; leaving things a broken mess, half or not at all done job is the goal, so there is always endless work, to come back and redo, over and over and over. You know, busy work.

It is self creating, self sustaining business, that has no honest market but they created their own market, they created their own supply and demand, they supply all sides and they really don't care about the mission statements that civilian or for that matter military put on it, they only care about the $ and more importantly the power that flows with it, especially the financiers of such long pursuits.

In a perverse way, the US military is the most socialistic business empire that there has ever been, as in not only is it completely subsidized by US tax payers (as well as fed the lives of their sons and daughters) they also get to print free money while making it up as they go along, gotta hand to them, they really pulled the wool over apparently the whole worlds eyes for the last, seventy years it would seem, perhaps still counting, because believing this might be too hard to parse, for some.

More war, more profits. More "managed chaos" more long term contracts, more incompetence more acceptance of failure and bad out comes, this is normal, it is OK, it is expected, oh well, blah, blah, blah with a meh, thrown in for the emos.

It isn't personal, its anti personnel, it's just business, remember the average human is worth $1.68 well maybe its gone up to all of $4 by now due to inflation and supply shortages, point is life is cheap or something, therefor it is profitable. It isn't about religion, politics, ethics, ideals, its about the whole money/power relationship/dynamic.

We just had Covid19 knock the global, just in time economy, with silly supply chain weaknesses, into a near certain down turn, the whole thing was wobbling before anyhow, but that is another topic.

On a related note, Israel has been badgering the US to go to war with Iran since the US has taken its sweet time in smashing the whole ME into a pulp. This was coming as wind down in preparation for that and or other endeavors.

The only reason at this point they have not done that job is the uncertainty in relation to how long and how high oil prices would explode to if they actually said, OK little sister (Israel) its time, smashy smashy! The timing is becoming "right" to have another "big" war, to distract from the multiple ongoing domestic political failures at home (within the US not Afghanistan).

Plenty of oil/gas traders would love another gulf war, war is good for profiteering/extortion/corruption. It would probably tank most economies in the world in the process, which may or may not be a secondary goal. I don't pretend to know which billionaire oligarch is about to eat which other billionaire oligarch but that is definitely a game some play when they are not buying worthless multi billion dollar yachts to compare how big their Johnson's(?) are.

Only problem is the US has taken so long in its escapades in Iraq, Syria and by third party Yemen and various other places such as horn of Africa that China is more of an issue to the US than Iran at this point.

Will the US declare war on China, probably not, but now the US has a hard problem, they can't really fight two proper wars at the same time, even with extensive mercenary military contractors that are not officially on the pay roll, but are doing the equivalent of the gig economy but for vets that like to take bets, the "rumor" is a lot of top talent from the US military and doubtless from other NATO militaries are ditching the low pay structure of traditional military life and going consultant and earning anywhere between five and ten times as much per year on their first year on retainer, it is better than the 1st year sign on bonuses that newly minted investment bankers get, by multiples.

If there is a point to this, maybe the cards are set to fall that the US will be dragging all of NATO into something with Iran on the basis that they'll get some kick backs if they spot some of the pain/drama.

However the window for that play is closing if they want to give China a black eye by crushing Iran.

China might get to energy independence and full electrification before the EU and the USA can, which would mean the status quo will be very different and we will be back to a bipolar geopolitical world, similar to the pain of USA v USSR back in the cold war days.

Perhaps there is some other play, but those are the obvious ones since the drum beat in the news for the last decade has been for Iran next and China has only really been the last four years.

    Anyhow, carry on.

I think it's telling that people suddenly give a shit about civilian casualties in airstrikes in Afghanistan. If this hadn't happened as part of the pullout, neither the airstrike nor the collateral damage would have made the news.

If they did hit a car bomb on the way to an attack, the secondary explosions mentioned by the Pentagon could easily have caused far more damage than the initial munition - in the last 20+ years, Western militaries have gotten pretty good at calibrating munition size to hit vehicles without substantially damaging nearby buildings. Not that it makes the deaths of so many civilians any better, even if the potential saved lives from avoiding an attack in a more densely populated area might technically provide for a justified (if cold) moral calculus.

The Pentagon and the CIA have a very long history of outright lying about civilian casualties in Afghanistan. It's possible most of the damage was caused by the secondary explosions. It's also possible the initial strike was based on faulty intelligence or slightly missed its target. No real way to tell who's lying at this point.

Sure, there's really precious little we do know right now and I doubt we'll ever learn much more. The secondary explosion argument is plausible, but so is mistargeted or missed munitions.

As more and more information comes to light it's becoming more and more clear that the Dutch government royally fucked up evacuation of Afghani who have worked for the Dutch, and the responsible minister id expected to get a vote of no confidence later today. And rightly so, they were advised with increasing urgency to prepare for this for months, even got offered help from the French, and apparently did nothing. It's shameful.

If that happens, then your country's conduct will at least have been somewhat less disgraceful than eg. Sweden's. There will be no accountability here.

I was wrong it wasn't a vote of no confidence but a vote of disapproval against the ministers of defense and foreign affairs. Minister of foreign affairs resigned, minister of defense did not.

And now the minister of defense resigned as well. Curious how a scandal like this will affect the formation of a new government (which is already going badly).
