Racism and xenophobia are such common problems everywhere that it's easy to think you know what it looks like. And then something like this happens:

These are ordinary people—just like the ordinary people who held a vigil for the deceased. Yet, these ordinary people have, through their collective efforts, accomplished something extraordinary—a truly unexpected and novel expression of racism.

I have the hypothesis that racism and xenophobia are disorders like arachnophobia. The problem is that politicians are trying to normalize mental illnesses instead of healing them. And people understand that the illness is part of their identity.
